Phoenix-area sisters get full $1K refund from travel company
Jo Ann Minor and her sister, Deb Reed, booked a flight to Italy through Booking.com. The sisters paid the travel company just over $3,071. The refund came, but it was only a partial refund. On Your Side got involved and contacted Booking, who returned the $1,015.35 in bookings, plus $851 for women’s travel insurance.“If you’re watching this, or anybody out there, call on Your Side because they are on your side,” the sisters said.
In a previous On Your Side report, the two siblings explained how they booked a flight to Naples, Italy, for themselves and a third sister. They’ve been to Italy before and wanted to go again. On Your Side’s Gary Harper asked, “You normally use a travel agent, you didn’t this time?” Jo Ann replied, “Exactly. This time, Deb decided she’d go ahead and do all the arrangements herself, and she decided to go through Booking.com.”
Booking.com is one of the largest travel agencies around. The three sisters paid the travel company just over $3,071, but the women canceled an hour later when they realized their departure dates wouldn’t work after all. That’s when Booking.com sent them this email saying no problem and that they should expect a full refund in just a few days.
The refund came, but it was only a partial refund. “It says, “full refund.” Full. F-U-L-L. This is not the ‘full refund,’” Deb said.
On Your Side got involved and contacted Booking.com. In a statement to On Your Side, a spokesperson wrote that Booking.com acts solely as an intermediary and that it farms bookings out to a third-party aggregator. They also said, “We act solely as the platform and are not involved in the third-party terms.”
Regardless, Booking.com returned just over $1,015.35, which is $851 for the seat selections and the rest for women’s travel insurance. The sisters say getting a thousand dollars back only happened with the help of On Your Side.
