Israel-Iran conflict LIVE updates: US bases in Middle East set to be targeted if Trump joins war; Ali Khamenei’s location known, US president says

G7 leaders call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Israel has been engaged in a war with Hamas since October. The death toll from the conflict has now reached more than 60,000. The UN has warned of a humanitarian crisis if the conflict continues. The G7 leaders also called for an end to the use of force in the Middle East by Iran and Syria. The U.S. and Israel have been at odds over how to end the conflict in the region.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sought to rally the G7 leaders to support a ceasefire in Gaza, renewing the push amid an escalation of hostilities between Iran and Israel.

“This is a moment in which we can agree to a ceasefire in Gaza,” she told reporters at the G7 summit in Canada on Tuesday.

“I have shared this sentiment with everyone I’ve spoken to these days and I have found agreement – so much so that this common position is in the ‘allied nations’ Middle East statement.”

Israel has been engaged in a war against Gaza since October 2023, when Hamas launched a multipronged onslaught on Israel from the strip, killing 1200. Gaza authorities say the death toll there has topped 57,000 casualties, while the UN has warned of catastrophic humanitarian conditions.

Some of Israel’s closest European allies, including Germany, the UK and France, have grown increasingly critical of its prosecution of the war, which has destroyed much of the coastal strip and sparked what international aid agencies say is a hunger crisis.

“We must push for this result,” Meloni said.

“I have always backed the reconstruction plan put forward by Arab countries. I think the Gulf countries’ role in this phase in the region is fundamental, and we have to support their role as much as possible in trying to find a solution.”

She said the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin negotiating peace between Iran and Israel – an option put forward by US President Donald Trump earlier this week – was “not on the table”.

“Giving a mediating role in another war to a nation already at war doesn’t seem like one of the best options to me,” she said.

Israel Iran conflict LIVE Updates: Uncertainty roiled the region and residents of Tehran fled their homes in droves on the sixth day of Israel’s air campaign aimed at Iran’s military and nuclear programme. A major explosion could be heard around 5 am in Tehran Wednesday morning, following other explosions that boomed earlier in the predawn darkness. Authorities in Iran offered no acknowledgement of the attacks, which has become increasingly common as the Israeli airstrike campaign has intensified since they began on Friday. The Israelis earlier warned they could strike a neighborhood south of Mehrabad International Airport, which includes residential neighborhoods, military installations, pharmaceutical companies and industrial firms.

Israel Iran conflict LIVE Updates: Intense Israeli airstrikes targeted Iran’s capital early Wednesday after it issued a warning about a new area it could target, a day after US President Donald Trump demanded “unconditional surrender.”

Israeli military strikes Iranian centrifuge, weapons production sites Israeli military said on Wednesday it attacked a centrifuge production site and several weapons production sites of the Iranian regime last night, reported Reuters.

Israel Iran War Live Updates: Nuclear agency reports more damage to enrichment site Israel Iran War Live Updates: The International Atomic Energy Agency said it believed that Israel’s first aerial attacks on Iran’s Natanz enrichment site had directly affected the facility’s underground centrifuge facility.

Satellite imagery collected after Friday’s attacks showed “additional elements that indicate direct impacts on the underground enrichment halls,” the watchdog said.

The IAEA earlier reported that Israeli strikes had destroyed an above-ground enrichment hall at Natanz and knocked out electrical equipment that powered the facility, which is 220 kilometers (135 miles) southeast of Tehran.

Most of Iran’s enrichment takes place underground to protect from airstrikes.

Israel has struck Natanz repeatedly and claims to have hurt its underground facilities, which experts assess contain 10,000 centrifuges that enrich uranium up to 60%.

Israel Iran War Live Updates: Iran restricting access to outside world Israel Iran War Live Updates: Iranian authorities appeared to be curbing the public’s access to the outside world. Phone and internet service was disrupted, with landline phones unable to receive or dial international calls. NetBlocks, an internet monitoring group, reported that it had detected a significant drop in internet traffic from the country.

Iran’s Cyber Security Command acknowledged the internet restrictions and in a statement carried by Iranian state television said it was “implementing numerous measures for different parts of the country” The move was meant to stop enemies from “continuing to exploit infrastructure to carry out cyber and military operations,” the statement said.

Iran has restricted important communications tools in past nationwide protests and during the 1980s Iran-Iraq war.

International websites appeared to be blocked, but local websites were functioning, likely signalling that Iran had turned on the so-called “halal net,” its locally controlled version of the internet aimed at limiting what the public can see.

Iran’s state TV on Tuesday urged the public to remove the messaging app WhatsApp from their cellphones, alleging without evidence that the app gathered user information to send to Israel.

In a statement, WhatsApp said it was concerned that “these false reports will be an excuse for our services to be blocked at a time when people need them the most.”

Israel Iran War Live Updates: Shops closed, lines for gas in Iran’s capital Israel Iran War Live Updates: Tehran is one of the largest cities in the Middle East, with around 10 million people, roughly equivalent to Israel’s entire population. People have been fleeing since hostilities began. Downtown Tehran emptied out early Tuesday, with many shops shuttered, as well as the ancient Grand Bazaar, which has closed only in times of crisis, such as during the 2022 anti-government protests and the coronavirus pandemic.

On the roads out of Tehran to the west, traffic stood bumper to bumper. Many middle- and upper-class Iranians were headed to the Caspian Sea, a popular getaway spot. Long lines snaked from Tehran’s gas stations.

Israel Iran War Live Updates: Iran vows further attacks Israel’s military warned the population to stay close to shelters as Iran fired new salvos of missiles Wednesday, but officials said most were intercepted and Israel’s rescue services had no immediate reports of injuries. Sirens blared in southern Israel, including in the desert town of Dimona, the heart of Israel’s never-acknowledged nuclear arms programme.

Iran launches extensive attacks on Israel after Khamenei declares war

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declares that “the battle begins” The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later claimed to have used hypersonic missiles. The first salvo began to trigger sirens across a large swath of Israel shortly after 12:40 a.m. The next barrage of approximately 10 rockets began around 40 minutes later and triggered alerts in central Israeli communities and a number of West Bank settlements. There were no reports of injuries in the successive attacks, but a fire was sparked at a parking lot in central Israel, damaging numerous cars. The IDF said after the latter incident that the air force downed a drone “from the east,” a term the military has previously used to refer to Iran-backed groups.

Iran fired a pair of ballistic missile barrages at Israel early Wednesday, as Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that “the battle begins” and called for showing “no mercy” toward Israelis, The Times of Israel reports.

The first salvo, which began to trigger sirens across a large swath of Israel shortly after 12:40 a.m., included some 15 projectiles. The next barrage of approximately 10 rockets began around 40 minutes later and triggered alerts in central Israeli communities and a number of West Bank settlements.

Several minutes before the attacks, the Israel Defense Forces issued alerts warning residents of the missile fire and instructing them to seek shelter. Following each salvo, the IDF informed Israelis it was then safe to leave the bomb shelters.

There were no reports of injuries in the successive attacks, but a fire was sparked at a parking lot in central Israel, damaging numerous cars.

It was not immediately clear if the blaze was the result of a direct impact or caused by falling debris from an interception.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later claimed to have used hypersonic missiles.

“The 11th wave of the proud Operation Honest Promise 3 using Fattah-1 missiles” was carried out, the IRGC said in a statement carried by state television, claiming that Iranian forces “have gained complete control over the skies of the occupied territories.”

Warning sirens were also activated overnight around the Dead Sea due to a suspected drone infiltration, and shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday morning in numerous northern communities. The IDF said after the latter incident that the air force downed a drone “from the east,” a term the military has previously used to refer to Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Yemen.

The overnight missile launches followed several smaller salvos throughout Tuesday, with the IDF saying it believed the attacks were decreasing in scope as Iran’s capabilities had been degraded by Israeli strikes.

“We must give a strong response to the terrorist Zionist regime,” Khamenei wrote on his English-language X account after the second missile barrage early Wednesday. “We will show the Zionists no mercy.”

He issued a similar tweet in Hebrew as well as a Shia-themed post in Farsi stating “the battle begins” and claiming a return to Khaybar, referring to a town whose Jewish inhabitants were conquered by Muslim forces in the 7th century.

The post featured an image of a man holding a sword entering a castle-like gate, with fiery streaks in the sky overhead.

Meanwhile, the IDF issued an evacuation warning Wednesday urging residents of District 18 in Tehran to leave the area, saying that Israel was going to take action in the area targeting military infrastructure.

Shortly afterward, the military announced that the Israeli Air Force had embarked on a new wave of strikes in the Iranian capital, without immediately providing further details.

US President Donald Trump claimed that the States had taken “complete and total control of the skies over Iran.” He further warned Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei saying that “We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there – We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don’t want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The long-simmering tensions between Israel and Iran have exploded into open warfare since Friday, June 13, 2025, marking an unprecedented period of direct military confrontation. Israel initiated a major campaign of fighter jet and drone strikes across Iran, targeting nuclear and military sites, including surface-to-surface missile production facilities, detection radar sites, and surface-to-air missile launchers. Reports indicate strikes on residential areas and fuel depots, with Iran’s health ministry reporting at least 224 fatalities and over 1,200 injuries, mostly civilians. Israeli forces have also reportedly killed several top Iranian military commanders and atomic scientists. The IDF claims to have destroyed one-third of Iran’s surface-to-surface missile launchers and achieved “full air superiority over Tehran,” also striking an Iranian refueling aircraft 2,300 km away.

In retaliation, Tehran has launched barrages of missiles and drones, hitting Israeli cities and towns, causing at least 24 deaths and 592 injuries, with a major oil refinery in Haifa among the targets. The IDF confirmed intercepting over 100 Iranian UAVs.

The international community, including China, Turkey, and G7 leaders, has urgently called for de-escalation, but both sides remain defiant. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserts the offensive aims to thwart “existential” nuclear and missile threats and has not ruled out targeting Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, suggesting it would “end the conflict.” The UN’s IAEA reported physical damage to an above-ground component of Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment facility but normal external radiation levels, while warning of potential internal contamination. Amidst the crisis, planned nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington were called off.

Israel, with five days of missile strikes, has done considerable damage to Iran and believes it can now deal a permanent blow to Tehran’s nuclear program — particularly if it gets a little more help from Trump. But deepening American involvement, perhaps by providing the Israelis with bunker-busting bombs to penetrate Iranian nuclear sites built deep underground or offering other direct US military support, comes with enormous political risk for Trump. He appears to be gradually building the public case for more direct American involvement. “Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign,” Trump posted on social media shortly before the White House announced Trump was cutting short his visit to the Group of Seven summit in the Canadian Rockies. “What a shame, and waste of human life.
