“(Patients) end up being transferred to Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, Billings, Montana, and for us to expand care closer to home is obviously what’s best for their patients and families in times of crisis,” said Altru President Dr. Joshua Deere.
Armstrong touted the expansion of mental health treatment in local communities as the No. 1 way to fight the vicious cycle of mental health problems.
“Every single bed counts and every bed that is not filled with one of these facilities ends up in the county jail or ends up cycling back through in and out,” Armstrong said.

The governor also highlighted the $300 million approved by lawmakers to renovate the state hospital in Jamestown. The governor called local beds more important.
“If we had empty beds at the state hospital. That should be our goal at the end of the day because if we don’t need them downstream it means we are succeeding upstream,” Armstrong said.
