There’s a wide gap between two generations – Gen X and Gen Z. Growing up, Gen X had to adhere to certain social rules that were vital to their upbringing.

As a product of the Gen X era, I’ve witnessed the shift and it’s fascinating how these social norms we grew up with are now seen as alien to Gen Z.

1) Be home when the streetlights turn on

Back in our day, this was the golden rule for Gen X kids. No cell phones, no GPS trackers – just good old streetlights.

The moment those lights flickered on, it was a signal for us to drop everything and head home. Not showing up on time would mean trouble and a lot of explaining to do.

Fast track to today, this concept confuses Gen Z. With smartphones in their hands, they are always just a text or a call away. The idea of using streetlights as a curfew indicator seems completely outdated to them. This shift from using environmental cues to relying on technology for communication is indeed a stark contrast between the two generations.

2) Respect for elders is non-negotiable

I vividly remember my mother’s words echoing in my ears, “Respect your elders, no matter what.” This was a cardinal rule in our Gen X households.

Whether it was giving up our seat for an older person on the bus, or keeping quiet when an adult was speaking, we were taught to show unwavering respect. Disagreeing with an elder in public? That was unthinkable!

Now, when I see the Gen Z kids, this rule seems to befuddle them. They value equality and freedom of speech so much, they don’t hesitate to voice their opinions, irrespective of the other person’s age. To them, it’s about mutual respect rather than age-based respect. I’m not saying it’s wrong, but it’s indeed a stark contrast to what we were taught growing up.

3) Handwritten thank you notes

In the Gen X era, saying thank you was an art. One that required a pen, paper, envelope, and sometimes a cute little sticker for good measure. Handwritten thank you notes were our way of showing gratitude.

It was considered polite and thoughtful to send a note whenever someone had done you a kindness or given you a gift.

Today, Gen Z kids are more likely to send a quick text or a social media shoutout to express their thanks. The idea of taking the time to handwrite a note and mail it seems almost prehistoric to them. Yet, studies show that handwritten notes create a stronger emotional connection than digital messages.

4) Calling for a friend

As a Gen X kid, if you wanted to hang out with a friend, you had to go through the daunting task of calling their home phone. This meant potentially having to chat with their parents or siblings before you could even ask if your friend was available.

This social ritual, which was part and parcel of growing up for us, is completely foreign to Gen Z. With smartphones and social media, they can directly reach their friends anytime, anywhere, without the need for awkward small talk with family members. It’s an immediate connection that has completely bypassed the old school approach we grew up with.

5) Encyclopedia for research

Way before the internet became a household name, Gen X kids had the encyclopedia. We would spend hours flipping through these hefty volumes, hunting for information for our school projects or just to quench our thirst for knowledge.

Today, Gen Z kids live in the age of Google. Any query they have is just a click away. The idea of manually searching through pages of a printed encyclopedia is not only time-consuming but also unimaginable to them. The digital shift in information seeking is a clear indicator of the generational divide.

6) Family dinners were sacred

In the Gen X era, family dinners were a sacred ritual. It was a time for everyone to gather around the table, share a meal, and talk about their day.

You’d exchange stories, laughter, and sometimes even a few tears. It was more than just eating; it was about bonding, understanding each other, and reinforcing family ties.

Today, with Gen Z’s fast-paced lifestyle, dominated by technology and individual schedules, the concept of regular family dinners seems to have lost its charm. They often prefer solitary meals or eating on the go. The emotional connection and warmth that came with traditional family dinners is what many of us from Gen X miss and cherish.

7) The thrill of mystery

In the Gen X days, not knowing was a part of life. We didn’t have smartphones to instantly answer our queries or GPS to guide us to our destinations. The mystery added a sense of adventure and excitement to even the mundane.

I recall being lost on a family road trip, with no clue about our whereabouts, relying only on paper maps and local folks for directions. It was nerve-wracking but also incredibly exciting and memorable.
