Astronomers have just made a major breakthrough in understanding the black hole at the center of our galaxy. Using artificial intelligence and millions of distributed computing simulations, they’ve managed to estimate its rotation speed with unprecedented accuracy. This advancement relies on a neural network trained from numerous computer-generated black hole simulations. The results, published in, open new avenues for understanding these extreme cosmic objects. The researchers used a method called the Bayesian approach, which allows estimating error margins in the data. This enabled them to compare observations from the Event Horizon Telescope with more realistic models. Using this technique, they discovered that the black hole Sagittarius A* is spinning at nearly its maximum speed, and that its rotation axis is pointing toward Earth. This discovery challenges some ideas about how matter organizes around black holes. Contrary to what some models predicted, the detected emissions wouldn’t come from a matter jet, but rather from extremely hot electrons in the disk surrounding the black hole. This shows our current theories will likely need adjustments. The scientists involved in this research are already planning to refine their models. By better combining artificial intelligence with more powerful computing tools, they hope to explore other black hole-related phenomena. This study demonstrates how modern technologies are changing our way of exploring the Universe. The combination of AI and distributed computing helps us better unravel the mysteries of these objects once considered impossible to study.
