In its honor, we the PEOPLE rounded up 10 celebrity subway takes to exercise our right to agree and disagree, from Cate Blanchett ‘s disdain of leaf blowers to Charli xcx ‘s claim that “music is not important.”
The creator shares his civilian and celebrity interviews (complete with a mic attached to a MetroCard) on social media, where they’ve garnered millions of views across Instagram and TikTok . SubwayTakes’ endless output of conversation-starting hot takes has landed it a spot as one of PEOPLE’s 100 Reasons to Love America.
For some on the New York City subway, the goal is to avoid interaction at all costs — they’ll hide in a book or put on headphones and tune out the commute. Comedian Kareem Rahma does the exact opposite, approaching folks to ask the provocative question: “What’s your take?”
01 of 10 Cate Blanchett Cate Blanchett hates leaf blowers and thinks they should be “eradicated from the face of the earth.” She cites noise, air pollution and overall ineffectiveness in achieving the goal of actually getting rid of the leaves as the fuel behind her crusade. Needless to say, the Oscar-winning actress has backed up her claim with reasonable, thought-out evidence. I’m convinced. Verdict: Agree. Banish the leaf blower!
02 of 10 Alex Consani Alex Consani wholly supports sliding into someone’s DMs. Sure, if you feel emboldened and aren’t weird about it. It’s the modern equivalent of approaching a stranger in a bar or café (along with, you know, approaching a stranger in a bar or café) — just digitally. As the supermodel said, “communication is communication,” and if someone wants to be friends via social media, why not? Verdict: Agree. Some of the coolest people may be just a message away.
03 of 10 Lil Nas X Lil Nas X has a hot take for couples: They should sleep in separate rooms. If two people in a relationship are living together, there’s no point in wasting space on having an extra bedroom when half the reason couples live together is to afford a larger space. Verdict: Disagree. Use the room for an office or an entertainment room.
04 of 10 Hasan Minhaj No more waiters singing “happy birthday” in restaurants — at least, for Hasan Minhaj. The comedian thinks grown adults should be exempt from being publicly serenaded with “Happy Birthday,” as it’s “embarrassing” for everybody involved, from the staff to the recipient and the witnesses. Verdict: Agree. Spare us from the off-key sing-along.
05 of 10 Charli xcx “Music is not important,” prolific singer-songwriter-producer Charli xcx stated. Rather, she argued that artistry supersedes the music. What matters most is the culture a musician creates around their work. “Some artists have a song, but a song isn’t enough,” she explained. Although not all singers might have an established identity, there’s typically a band of creatives working behind the scenes to curate the culture Charli is referring to. All of it begins with and is rooted in the music, and if the song isn’t good, there’s no foundation. Verdict: Disagree. Sorry Charli.
06 of 10 Ramy Youssef Ramy Youssef has a lot of faith in humanity. “Fundamentally, everyone is a good person,” he claimed. “People are not bad, they’re infected.” It’s the age-old argument of nurture vs. nature: that people only do bad because they are influenced by external forces in their personal lives and communities to act a certain way. The actor has an optimistic perspective on people, and he’s so charming that we’re inclined to agree. Verdict: Agree… tentatively.
07 of 10 A’ja Wilson WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson initially argued that “reporters should be able to play the sport that they’re reporting on,” but backtracked to say sports journalists should have played a sport at one point. It’s a fair claim for a pro athlete to make, but Rahma makes a counterclaim that fanatics, who are obsessed with stats, lore and the players, might not need the on-court experience. Besides, journalists should remain curious and open to new information, regardless of whether it’s their wheelhouse or not. Verdict: Disagree. Playing isn’t the only way to become an expert.
08 of 10 Halsey “Tragedy makes people funny,” Halsey said. The pop star, who uses she/they pronouns, explained she developed “an incredible sense of comedy” after suffering from serious health scares. As Rahma said, “It’s a way to process the pain.” Verdict: Many comedians with tragic backstories would Agree.
09 of 10 Paul W. Downs Paul W. Downs is a ride-or-die advocate for half-and-half in coffee — and thinks any café or restaurant that doesn’t have it should be shuttered. As a lactose-intolerant person, I couldn’t be more indifferent to half-and-half, but I definitely do think people should have the right to decide what goes in their coffee. Should a café be shut down if it doesn’t have half-and-half, though? Put some whole milk or creamer in it. Verdict: Disagree. Cow milk is cow milk.
