Professor turns dead birds into drones

A team at New Mexico Tech has found a way to use body parts to create realistic avian imposters, believing that the drones would aid wildlife monitoring. The current prototype only flies for 10 to 20 minutes, as the next stage is to figure out how to make the taxidermy bird drone fly longer. Privacy advocates worry that drones could be used for military or law enforcement surveillance purposes, but Dr. Mostafa Hassanalian says he and his team will continue to work on this project for the next two years. The team runs its experiments inside a drone cage with fake mechanical birds to study the formation, flight, or flock of the birds of migratory birds. They are not yet able to fly their taxider my birds with a real flock, so they run their experiments inside the cage of a drone with a fake mechanical bird to study their flight efficiency. They hope to have a working model of the drone by the end of the year, if not sooner.

That scenario may soon be possible, thanks to researchers at New Mexico Tech, who have taken an unconventional approach to wildlife monitoring.

Reuters traveled to Socorro, New Mexico to speak to Dr. Mostafa Hassanalian, a mechanical engineering professor leading a unique project, fitting taxidermy birds with drones.

Hassanalian completed two Master’s degrees in flapping wing drones, which he developed with artificial material.

When he realized that those models did not provide the highest efficiency compared to actual birds, Hassanalian decided to give dead birds new life by turning them into drones.

“Now we can use a re-engineered birds and dead birds and make them as a drone. And the only thing that we need to provide them to make them alive is to basically design an attrition mechanism, put in their body, and everything is there. So they have their tail, they have their wings, they have their head, the body, everything is there. So we do reverse engineering,” Hassanalian said.

The professor and his students calculate the weight, flapping frequency, and flapping angle the bird had while it was alive to create something similar.

Because they are not yet able to fly their taxidermy birds with a real flock, the engineering team runs its experiments inside a drone cage with fake mechanical birds.

This allows them to study the formation, flight, or flock of the birds of migratory birds.

These studies all circle back to the advancement of the aviation industry, Hassanalian explained.

“It’s basically if we learn how they, how these birds, they manage your energy between themselves, we can apply them into the future aviation industry to save more energy and save more fuel,” he said.

Brenden Herkenhoff, a Ph.D. student at New Mexico Tech, focuses his research on bio-inspiration, mainly looking at coloration and flight efficiency for various types of drones and other aircraft.

While other researchers think of a bird’s color as a way for attracting mates or camouflage, Herkenhoff is studying how color affects flight efficiency.

“We’ve done experiments and determined that for our fixed-wing aircraft, applying certain color can change the flight efficiency. And the same is true for birds, we believe,” he said.

The experiments by the Ph.D. student help Hassanalian improve the effectiveness of the taxidermy bird drone for a model with a longer flight endurance.

Despite the benefits of this technology, the use of drones has raised privacy concerns and Dr. Hassanalian is well aware of them.

Privacy advocates worry that drones could be used for military or law enforcement surveillance purposes.

“We cannot deny the application of this for other types of military types of application. But what we have in focus is mainly civil application and specifically to understand the wildlife or monitor the birds,” Hassanalian said while acknowledging the concerns.

Hero cancer patient threw himself on Hamas grenade during Israel festival massacre

Cancer patient Raz Peri jumped on Hamas grenades in a bid to save others attending the Supernova music festival in Israel. Peri was shot in his stomach but survived because he pulled the dead woman’s body over himself and pretended to be dead. Hamas terrorists killed more than 1,200 Israelis, wounded more than 4,200, and took at least 200 hostage. The Gaza Health Ministry — which is controlled by Hamas — reported at least 3,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 12,500 injured since the war began. The explosion from one of the grenades tossed in the bunker tore through Peri’s leg and left him partially unconscious. He has been recovering for the past 13 days at the Rehov Rehov Medical Centre in Rehov, Israel, where he is being treated for lymphoma and other ailments. He said he was at the festival to “feel alive again” but had to quickly turn to survival mode as the invasion unfolded, he told CNN from his hospital bed.

A cancer patient attending the Supernova festival in Israel when Hamas terrorists invaded and slaughtered 260 innocent civilians on Oct. 7 survived a selfless act of heroism when he jumped on a grenade in a bid to save others.

Raz Peri, who is battling lymphoma, said he was at the festival to “feel alive again” but had to quickly turn to survival mode as the invasion unfolded, he told CNN from his hospital bed.

The 20-year-old watched in horror as “40 to 50” Hamas terrorists gunned down fleeing festival-goers during the early stages of the attack.

“I saw the terrorists shooting one, two, three, and they go down,” Peri said.

He scrambled with four others for shelter in a roadside bunker, but one of the women screamed when they saw the terrorists approaching the hideout and speaking Arabic.

Other Hamas invaders began firing at Peri, but instead struck a hiding festival-goer in the leg.

The fight ended outside the shelter with Hamas terrorists accidentally shooting dead one of their own, the outlet reported.

They quickly retreated back into the shelter, and then the remaining terrorists surrounded the structure and peered in with “crazy eyes,” before throwing multiple grenades inside.

Peri then selflessly threw his body onto a grenade to absorb the blast and save the others.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quick to announce, “We are at war,” and vowed Hamas would pay “a price it has never known.” The Gaza Health Ministry — which is controlled by Hamas — reported at least 3,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 12,500 injured since the war began.

“I don’t feel pain at this time. I just listen for the cars to go away,” he told the outlet.

The ruthless terrorists then left the area, prompting Peri and others to go for help while two survivors stayed back.

Unfortunately, those who remained would be killed before help arrived, Peri shared.

“When I go to the town, everyone is dead. I saw girls with their pants down. I saw a knife in the body,” he told CNN, gesturing that the knife was sticking out of the girl’s chest.

He found safety with a surviving family in a nearby town, who treated his wounds until further help arrived.

He has been recovering for the past 13 days at the Kaplan Medical Centre in Rehovot.

“I have cancer,” Peri said. “I go to the festival to listen to the music for my soul. What I have seen with my eyes I can never take this [away].”

IDF shares harrowing videos, photos of Hamas attack: ‘It’s things a person doesn’t do’

Video shows moment Hamas terrorists kill civilians in Israel. Terrorist says he and others were told to kill women and children. Video comes as Israel attempts to stamp out misinformation about the attack. More than 1,400 people have been killed in the attack on Israel’s Gaza border, officials say. The death toll is expected to rise as more people are reported wounded in the conflict with Hamas. The U.S. State Department says it is working with Israel to find a resolution to the crisis. The Israeli military says it has no plans to pull out of the Gaza border region, which is under the control of the Palestinian Authority. The Palestinian Authority says the attack was an act of war against Israel, and that the death toll will rise as the number of dead rises. The United Nations has called the attack a “textbook example’ of terrorism’s impact on the world. The International Criminal Court has opened an investigation into the attack, but no charges have yet been filed against the Hamas terrorists.

The Israel Defense Forces shared a harrowing, 43-minute compilation Monday of Hamas’ surprise terror attack that killed more than 1,400 people — including an interview with a terrorist who admitted that he had clear orders to kill women and children and even rape the bodies of the dead.

The horrific videos and pictures shared with journalists contain graphic evidence of Hamas gunning down, torturing and decapitating civilians during its invasion across the Gaza border on Oct. 7.

One of the videos shows the shocking moment a group of terrorists, disguised as IDF soldiers, flag down passing cars before shooting the occupants.

The bodies are then dragged out of the vehicles and left on the side of the road, with the Hamas members seen stealing the victims’ belongings from the bullet-riddled cars, the Times of Israel reported.

Another video shows a captured member of Hamas admitting that the terrorists “became animals” when carrying out their orders to slaughter and terrorize people across Israel.

“It’s things a person doesn’t do — beheading people, having sex with dead bodies, meaning the body of a dead, young woman,” the terrorists said in the video published by Kan, Israel’s public broadcaster. “It’s not humans that do that.”

Although the Hamas operative said he knew Islam forbids the killing of women, children and seniors, he explained that he and others were told to ignore that and enter every Israeli home they could with the intent to shoot “anyone who was in the house.”

“In the mosques, they tell us to take mercy on women and children. In the army [Hamas], they tell us to kill, massacre them everywhere,” he said.

The member said they were also told to stomp on people’s heads and behead them, likening his group to ISIS and calling Hamas “inhuman.”

Another video reviewed by reporters shows the moment one victim was brutally beheaded using a shovel, and another incident where a father was killed by a grenade in front of his two boys as a Hamas soldier enjoys a drink in the bloody aftermath, according to the BBC.

“Daddy is dead, this is not a prank,” one of the sons yells. “Why am I alive?”

The sickening images come as Israel attempts to stamp out skepticism about the attack, with the IDF saying many online have spread misinformation to try to downplay the Oct. 7 terror attack, comparing them to Holocaust deniers.

Maj. Gen. Michael Edelstein, a former IDF Gaza division commander, told reporters that the new videos and photos should also put into perspective the need to destroy Hamas after Israel received criticism over its airstrikes in Gaza, which have killed more than 5,000 Palestinians, including children, according to the Hamas-led Health Ministry.

“We see that some of the channels are trying to compare what Israel is doing and what those vile terrorists are doing,” Edelstein said. “I cannot understand anyone who compares.”

“And after what we have shared with you, you should know it.”

As it released the videos and photos, Israel intensified its airstrikes in Gaza yet again, hitting more than 320 targets over the past day, IDF officials reported.

The bombardments have mostly focused on northern Gaza as Israel is set to pave the way for a ground invasion, releasing multiple pamphlets in the area warning civilians to flee or be considered allies of Hamas.

The move has been condemned by the United Nations, which operates an aid group for civilians, saying the mobilization of more than 1 million people was not realistic, with many of the wounded in hospitals unable to be moved.

On Monday, the IDF also released footage of its new “Iron Sting” motor bombing system, which is being used to conduct precise attacks in Gaza to take out targets and enemy rocket launchers.

“Its operational use will revolutionize ground warfare and equip battalions with organic, accurate, and effective firepower,” the IDF said in a statement.

Elbit Systems, which developed the “Iron Sting” or “Steel Sting,” touted it in 2021 as a “precise, laser- and GPS-guided mortar munition” to engage in dense, urban environments while “reducing the possibility of collateral damage and preventing injury to non-combatants.”

The new system could quell fears from the international community that has expressed concerns over the safety of the more than 200 hostages taken by Hamas who could be injured or killed by Israel’s repeated bombardment.

The IDF estimates that Hamas has about 222 hostages in Gaza, an increase from 210 last week.

The hostage situation has remained at the forefront of concern in Israel’s counterattack as the kidnapped include at least 30 children and citizens from more than 30 nations.

After releasing two Americans last week, Hamas released two Israeli women, one 79 and the other 85, on Monday, with another 50 dual citizens scheduled to be released to the Red Cross following negotiations with Qatar and Egypt.
