Eight days after the London-bound Air India plane crashed in Gujarat, the State government announced on Friday (June 20, 2025) that 220 victims have been identified through DNA profiling, with the remains of 202 already handed over to their families.

State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel stated, “So far, 220 DNA samples have been matched, and relatives of these victims have been contacted. The mortal remains of 202 have been returned to their families, while the identification process for others is ongoing.”

Among the 202 victims were 160 Indians—151 passengers and nine who died on the ground—along with seven Portuguese nationals, 34 British citizens, and one Canadian. The remains of 15 victims were transported by air, while 187 were sent via road, the Minister said.

However, the BJP-led Gujarat government has yet to officially confirm the final death toll from the disaster. Earlier authorities said that DNA samples from 250 victims—including passengers and those killed on the ground—had been collected for identification.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and several others on the ground, including four students from the state-run B.J. Medical College. Only one passenger survived the tragedy.

With many bodies severely charred or damaged, authorities are relying on DNA testing to establish the identities of the victims.
