Like many quarterbacks in the NFL, San Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy is difficult to judge.

Purdy has reached the conference championship game twice in his career and even went to the Super Bowl in his second season. After signing a lucrative contract extension of over $265 million, it’s clear the former seventh-round pick has become a success story in the eyes of NFL lore.

But does that mean he’s an elite quarterback?

CBS Sports recently ranked all 32 starting quarterbacks into tiers. They placed Purdy in the second tier of “borderline stars” along with signal-callers Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, and Justin Herbert.

“The physical fragility of the San Francisco 49ers finally got to Purdy in Year 3, when his struggles playing from behind were clearer than ever,” CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin said. “Still, this kid is a Kyle Shanahan favorite for good reason. He’s a wily and underrated play-extender; he isn’t afraid to let it fly, and his collectedness took him to the biggest stage before.”

Putting Purdy in “Tier 2” along with quarterbacks who may have better numbers but nowhere near the amount of success is a fair ranking for the signal-caller.

He can be a key piece to a championship puzzle when he’s at his best. Things have to go perfectly for him, though. They did not last season when the 49ers faltered to a 6-11 mark.

Purdy can eventually return to his playoff-winning self with talent still around him.

No matter what, though, the 2025 season is a big one for San Francisco’s star.
