Apple is testing new Purple and Green color options for the iPhone 17 base model, according to new information shared by a leaker known as Majin Bu.

In a blog post today, Majin Bu said that only one of the two new colors might make the final cut, with Purple apparently being the more likely choice.

The base model iPhone 16 is available in five colors: Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, White, and Black.

Majin Bu has a mixed track record with Apple rumors. Most recently, they accurately leaked that iPadOS 26 would add a Mac-like menu bar to the iPad, but they incorrectly claimed that iOS 26 would add Stage Manager to iPhone models with a USB-C port.

iPhone 17: Other Rumors

In a research note with equity research firm GF Securities last month, Apple analyst Jeff Pu said that the iPhone 17 base model will be equipped with the A18 chip that is used in the iPhone 16 base model. The chip will continue to be manufactured with TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, known as N3E, he said.

Pu also expects the entry-level iPhone 17 to have 8GB of RAM, matching the iPhone 16.

Overall, the base iPhone 17 is shaping up to be a minor upgrade over the equivalent iPhone 16, with both devices expected to have the same overall design. Key new features that are rumored for the iPhone 17 include a 120Hz display and a 24-megapixel front camera, compared to 60Hz and a 12-megapixel front camera on the iPhone 16.

The base iPhone 17 will also feature a slightly larger 6.3-inch display compared to the 6.1-inch iPhone 16, according to display industry expert Ross Young.

Apple is expected to unveil the entire iPhone 17 series in September.

Rumor: Two new colors competing for the iPhone 17 base model

According to a leaker, Apple is experimenting with two new colors for this year’s iPhone 17 base models. Purple and Green are currently in development for the aluminum-framed iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, but Apple will likely pick just one of them for the final lineup this fall. The new Purple shade has generated strong interest within Apple, with internal descriptions calling it a “vibrant hue” that plays well with the aluminum frame.

According to leaker Majin Bu, Apple is experimenting with two new colors for this year’s iPhone 17 base models, but only one might make it to launch. And if the current internal scuttlebutt is anything to go by, there seems to be a frontrunner.

Purple vs. Green

Bu’s sources say that Purple and Green are currently in development for the aluminum-framed iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, but Apple will likely pick just one of them for the final lineup this fall. And Purple is in the lead.

As the leaker previously reported, the new Purple shade has generated strong interest within Apple, with internal descriptions calling it a “vibrant hue” that plays well with the aluminum frame.

Bu describes the Purple as “a vibrant and modern hue crafted for those seeking a device with bold personality,” while the Green is said to offer a “fresh and natural tone, ideal for a minimalist yet striking aesthetic.”

Still, he says, “only one color might make the final cut, with expectations leaning toward Purple being the likely choice for release.”

Purple, of course, would be a returning champion, as it has previously done quite well when released either mid-cycle, or as one of the official initial colors of iPhones 12, 13, and 15. Green iPhones, meanwhile, have been less frequent.

What else to expect

Color aside, the iPhone 17 base models are shaping up to be a bigger upgrade than usual. Alongside a larger display, Apple is expected to bring 120Hz refresh rates to its base device for the first time. That means smoother scrolling, better animations, and improved battery management.

The iPhone 17 is also expected to get an A18 chip and a single back camera supported by a pill-shaped horizontal bump that will run across the entire width of the device. However, whether one of the options will be in Green or Purple, we’ll have to wait until September to officially find out.

New & questionable leak points to iPhone 17 pastel color options

A well-known leaker claims that Apple could release the iPhone 17 in two new colors. Leaker Majin Bu announced that Apple is currently testing iPhone 17 base model colorways. This time around, it seems as though Apple may be planning on going with a pastel green and purple. The design echos that which we’ve seen in both leaked molds and dummy models.

A well-known leaker with a questionable track record claims that Apple could release the iPhone 17 in two new colors.

On Friday, Leaker Majin Bu announced that Apple is currently testing iPhone 17 base model colorways. This time around, it seems as though Apple may be planning on going with a pastel green and purple.

From the images shared by Bu, the purple appears to be pretty similar to what we saw with the iPhone 11 lineup. The green, however, is more saturated than the light green iPhone 15 and skews more towards yellow than the mint green iPhone 12.

In the accompanying blog post, Bu says that while both colors are actively under consideration, only one may actually make the final cut. The leaker says that as of right now, the current frontrunner is purple.

The rest of the blog post goes on to reiterate what Bu believes Apple will introduce with the upcoming iPhone 17 base model. It includes a 120Hz display, an aluminum design, improved cameras, and A18 Bionic chip.

The design shared also echos that which we’ve seen in both leaked molds and dummy models, with a vertically aligned dual camera, similar to the iPhone 16 layout.

Majin Bu’s track record is, like many leakers, mixed — but theirs is on the bad side of that “mixed” line. While Bu often gets certain details — mostly logical assumptions — correct, they also predicted the iPhone 15 “Ultra,” which was allegedly supposed to release with two front-facing cameras.
