CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A clinic at UVA Health is focusing on a lesser-known, but serious, brain condition that often mimics other illnesses and is commonly overlooked.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, or NPH, is caused by a buildup of excess fluid in the brain and can lead to symptoms like walking difficulties, memory problems, and more.

One UVA Health expert is leading a new clinic aiming to improve diagnosis and treatment for patients who might otherwise be misdiagnosed.

“Typically, it affects adults over the age of 60, and it’s more prevalent in people who are older,” UVA Health Neurologist Dr. Alissa Higinbothom said. “So if you’re 80 you’re more likely to have it then if you’re 70, more likely to have it then if you’re 60. But typically over the age of 60 is the population.”

The clinic offers specialized testing and treatment options, including surgical procedures that can help drain excess fluid and relieve pressure on the brain.
