STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Despite recently earning the distinction of two-time Super Bowl-winning coach and being widely regarded as the NFL’s top offensive line guru, Staten Island native Jeff Stoutland has clearly not forgotten his roots.

On Thursday evening, Port Richmond High School — where Stoutland once walked the halls and laid the foundation for his football career — held a fundraiser in his honor at Jimmy Max Pizza. Proceeds from the event will support the school’s annual football camp, new uniforms and other expenses for the upcoming season.

After a whirlwind stretch following the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory in February, Stoutland finally had a chance to return home — and called the opportunity to attend the event “a great honor.”

“It’s where your roots are set, and you cut your teeth playing in high school,” Stoutland said. “This is like a reunion in some aspects; it’s just been great to see my coaches, and hopefully I have enough time to see everybody.”

Stoutland also cherished the opportunity to reflect — not just on his playing days, but on the places and people that shaped his early years.

“I just drove around for about an hour,” he shared. “I went through Westerleigh and went by my old house, actually. The old neighbors were out, so I pulled over and we talked for a while sitting by the park and reminisced.”

“It’s also great to be at Jimmy Max. Jimmy’s always been a great person who does a lot for the community, so it’s no wonder that he’s having us here,” he added warmly.

Jimmy Max owner James McBratney, who also played baseball with Stoutland at Port Richmond, expressed his appreciation for the visit.

“He’s a true, true gentleman,” McBratney said.

“Anytime you play sports with somebody in high school, you have a connection that’s unbreakable. I was just thrilled when he won the Super Bowl — even though I sometimes have to root against him inwardly when he plays the Giants,” he added with a laugh.

Also in attendance was District Attorney Michael McMahon, who came out to “support Port Richmond High School football and to honor Coach Jeff for his incredible accomplishments as a Staten Islander.”

“Although I’m a Monsignor Farrell graduate, we always had a lot of respect for Port Richmond, and it’s such an important school in the history of Staten Island,” McMahon said.

“In fact, some of my assistant DAs are Hall of Fame members at Port Richmond, so I feel a strong connection to the school. It’s so important that all of Staten Island comes out and supports Port Richmond and an incredible alum in Coach Jeff,” he continued.

McMahon also emphasized the broader impact of varsity athletics on the borough: “From a law enforcement point of view, the more young people that get involved in varsity sports, the better it is for them and the community. It puts them on a great path, which is also why I’m here,” he shared.

Among the young people in attendance was Jason Cortes, an offensive lineman for Port Richmond, who appreciated the visit.

“It was great that he brought his experience to us,” Cortes said.

“Him sharing that he grew up a few blocks away from here like me gave me a nice boost of confidence and a sense of hope,” he added, reflecting on the impact of meeting a local figure who has risen to national prominence.

Cortes also took away a key piece of advice from their conversation, saying Stoutland encouraged him to “just keep working.”

“He said, if you want it, you’re going to have to get it on your own,” Cortes recalled. “Practicing and going to workouts is one thing, but he told us about how he went to the YMCA all the time when he was younger. It was a good way to connect with us.”

Port Richmond’s current head coach, Lou Vesce, was also grateful for Stoutland taking the time to speak with his players.

“Every word that came out of his mouth preached selflessness,” Vesce said. “As a former offensive lineman myself, that was a great speech with the boys — he’s a meat-and-potatoes guy like me.”

“I’ve known Coach Stoutland for many years, and I’m glad he came back,” he added.

Whether reconnecting with former teammates and coaches, reminiscing with old neighbors or offering guidance to the next generation, Stoutland’s return home left a lasting impact on everyone who crossed his path Thursday night.

Tucker County hopes to build off back-to-back 12-win seasons

Tucker County Mountain Lions have won a dozen games the past two seasons. Coach AJ Rapp is the sixth-longest tenured head football coach in West Virginia. Sam Marks is back to lead a Mountain Lion offense that averaged 42 points a game. Jared Reall was the team’s leading tackler and shouldered the load with Tucker’s rushing attack. The school stands 3,500 feet above sea level and has rebuilt the roster to set the foundation for future years.“The painting the field and the all summer-long stuff is getting old for me. But it is part of the game. If you want to be good at it, you have to do it,” Rapp said. “We’ve dropped semifinal games the last two seasons to two quality opponents in Williamstown and Wahama. They went on to win it. But we would like to be on the winning side of that’’

HAMBLETON, W.Va. — In his 21 seasons leading the Tucker County Mountain Lions, AJ Rapp has navigated the ups and downs of coaching a small school football program. Right now, the school that stands 3,500 feet above sea level is on the ascent. Rapp is the sixth-longest tenured head football coach in West Virginia and he says Friday nights in the fall keep him coming back year after year.

“When the lights are on and your kids are warming up, you look up and see someone’s grandma, your mom or your wife or your dad or whoever is standing in the crowd, there’s something special about that. The Friday nights keep me going,” Rapp said.

“The painting the field and the all summer-long stuff is getting old for me. But it is part of the game. If you want to be good at it, you have to do it.”

“He is a fun guy and he knows what he is talking about,” said Tucker County senior lineman Josh Crossland. “He has been through the best and the worst seasons. I always look up to him and listen to what he has to say.”

In each of the past two seasons, Tucker has won a dozen games and they hosted a Class A state semifinal game. Since 2022, the Mountain Lions have averaged eleven victories per season.

“That’s not easy to do, to go 12-0,” Rapp said. “There’s not a lot of teams that will do that. We’ve dropped semifinal games the last two seasons to two quality opponents in Williamstown and Wahama. They went on to win it. So there’s nothing to hang our heads about. But we would like to be on the winning side of that.”

Second team All-State signal caller Sam Marks is back to lead a Mountain Lion offense that averaged 42 points a game. He surpassed the two-thousand yard mark with 28 touchdown tosses.

“With Sam coming back, it is just easier for him,” Rapp said. “Last year was his first year in that offense.”

“He has improved a lot with his throwing,” said Tucker County senior Brock Hovatter. “His view on the defense has improved a lot.”

Perhaps the biggest loss from a strong senior class is multi-year starter Jared Reall. He was the team’s leading tackler and shouldered the load with Tucker’s rushing attack.

“I went back and looked at the stats and he carried the ball 225 times. Our next closest guy was around 25,” Rapp said. “He was our go-to and our workhorse.

“We’ve got a couple guys. Cade [Rapp], my son, he is finally a junior and he will tote the ball a little bit. Braxton George is a senior and he will tote the ball a little more. He didn’t get a whole lot of opportunities last year because Jared was Jared.”

Leading receiver Garrett Wilfong has also graduated but senior Reid Kisamore is a dynamic playmaker who scored ten touchdowns in 2024.

“He has really went around to a lot of these camps in the spring and summer and made some eyes pop,” Rapp said. “I think he ran a 4.4 40. He’s one of the fastest kids I have ever had, if not the fastest. We just have to get the ball in his hands.”

Crossland will be counted on to lead a group of linemen that is in need of new starters.

“We lost three linemen. You hate to see that. But it is high school football, next man up. You hope they’ll get the job done,” Rapp said.

Like many Class A programs, Tucker fought low numbers in recent years. However, their run of success has rebuilt the roster to set the foundation for future years.

“You look back a few years ago during the COVID time and a couple years before that, we were lucky to have 18-to-20 kids on the team. We are up to 30-35 kids now. Numbers are a good thing, especially for future reference to keep the ball rolling,” Rapp said.
