As June marks Pet Preparedness Month, the American Red Cross is emphasizing the importance of including pets in travel and emergency plans.

With many families planning summer trips, the organization advises pet owners to ensure their animals are safely contained or harnessed during car rides and never left alone in parked cars.

For those flying with pets, it’s crucial to check airline guidelines and have the necessary paperwork and vaccine records.

Beyond travel, the summer months often bring an increase in natural disasters and severe weather, making pet safety a priority. Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region, said, “When preparing for emergencies, it’s essential to plan for every member of your household, including pets. Our pets rely on us for their safety, and no emergency plan is complete without considering their needs. Including them ensures your whole family is protected.”

The Red Cross suggests incorporating pets into regular evacuation drills to help them adjust to traveling in carriers and reduce stress.

Pet owners are also encouraged to microchip their animals and keep identification information current.

When assembling a family emergency kit, it’s important to include items for pets such as a carrier, harness or leash, pet food, water, and a bed or blanket.
