Live updates: Trump claims US ‘obliterated’ Iran nuclear sites; world awaits response from Khamenei
Hardliners in Iran are calling for the US to withdraw from the NPT. The NPT is an agreement between the West and Iran to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. The U.S. has threatened to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities if it doesn’t back down from its stance on the issue. The US has also threatened to strike Iran if it does not back down on its stance. The move has been condemned by many in Iran, including the country’s prime minister and the president of the Islamic Republic.
Some have called attacks on US bases in the region, while others have suggested Iran should now withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or the NPT, under which it has pledged not to develop a bomb.
Hardline lawmaker Amir Hussein Sabeti said in a post on X that questions over the extent of damage the US strikes made to Iran’s nuclear sites was a “distorted debate.” He said: “The US has officially entered into war with Iran,” and “unless it receives a strong response, Iran’s deterrence [capability] will go.”
Iranian lawmaker Hamid Rasaee suggested in a post on X that attacking any spot in America would not be as effective as hitting US bases in Saudi Arabia, which would be like hitting several targets with one strike.
Rasaee said the US strike was a “violation of Iranian airspace, the invasion of our territory for the second time” and it “must be met with a harsh and severe response.”
Conservative news outlet Kayhan Online, whose editor-in-chief has previously been closely linked with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, said “Iran’s missiles are pointing at US bases in the region.”
“American soldiers will pay the price of Trump’s madness with their lives, and America’s helpless economy will hear the yelling of taxpayers who will from this point forward have to pay the cost of bombs for a war that will have no results,” the paper said in an online editorial.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said at a press conference in Istanbul the US had decided to “blow up” diplomacy and Iran “reserves all options to defend its security interests and people.”
The country’s top diplomat also hinted at pulling out of the nuclear treaty.
“The NPT is not able to protect us, so why a country like Iran, or other countries interested to have a peaceful nuclear energy, should rely on NPT,” Araghchi said.
Araghchi is in Moscow and is scheduled to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
