Raja Raghuvanshi murder: Meghalaya Police arrest eighth accused from Gwalior for destruction of evidence
Lokendra Singh Tomar was arrested from Gwalior for allegedly concealing and destroying evidence in the case. He is the owner of the apartment in Indore’s Heera Bagh Colony where Raja Raghuvanshi’s wife had stayed after returning to the city following his murder. Raja’s decomposed body had been found in a deep gorge in Sohra on June 2, after he and Ms. Sonam were reported missing on May 23. She was later arrested from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur on June 9.
According to the police, Lokendra Singh Tomar was arrested from Gwalior for allegedly concealing and destroying evidence in the case. He is the owner of the apartment in Indore’s Heera Bagh Colony where Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja’s wife and prime accused in the case, had stayed after returning to the city following his murder in Sohra area of Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district.
“A team of Meghalaya Police arrived here and took Lokendra Tomar in custody. They will depart for Indore after finishing formalities here,” a senior officer in Gwalior Police told The Hindu.
A senior officer in Indore Police’s Crime Branch, which is coordinating the local probe with Meghalaya Police, said Mr. Tomar was arrested based on inputs from Silome James, an Indore-based property dealer who was arrested on June 22 for allegedly burning a box containing items belonging to Ms. Sonam and her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, another prime accused.
“Silome James has revealed the involvement of Lokendra in destruction of evidence. He is claiming that he acted on Lokendra’s instructions but we will get more clarity once the latter arrives here on Tuesday and the two are questioned together,” the officer said, requesting anonymity.
Apart from Mr. James, Balvir Ahirvar alias Balla, a security guard of the apartment building, was also arrested on June 22. The Meghalaya Police was granted a seven-day transit remand of the two persons, but the SIT is currently questioning them in Indore itself.
Ms. Sonam and Mr. Kushwaha are already in judicial custody in Meghalaya along with the latter’s three friends — Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi — who were allegedly hired to execute the murder.

In a significant development in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, Meghalaya police on Monday apprehended Lokendra Singh Tomar, a resident of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh for his alleged involvement in destruction of evidences.
Tomar was arrested following a request from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Gwalior Police.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Tomar is the landlord of the flat at Dewas Naka where Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder case, had taken shelter while hiding in Indore. Tomar allegedly left Madhya Pradesh for Uttarakhand on June 16 and later proceeded to Gwalior on June 22.
The SIT has issued a request for Tomar’s formal arrest, and a splinter team is currently en route from Indore to Gwalior to take him into custody, he said while adding that Tomar will be produced before a court in Gwalior for transit remand.
Tomar is wanted in connection with the destruction and concealment of vital evidence in the case. The SIT’s efforts to gather evidence and bring all perpetrators to justice are ongoing.
On Sunday, Silome James, who is a property dealer who rented out a flat to Vishal Singh Chauhan, one of the main accused in the case, and Balla Ahirwar. who is a security guard posted at the apartment complex where the flat is located – were arrested for destruction of evidences.
“All three accused are expected to be brought to Shillong on Wednesday,” the SP informed.
With these arrests, the total number of individuals apprehended in the case has risen to eight, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, the deceased’s wife who surrendered to police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district on June 8.
Sonam, her lover Raj Kushwaha and his three friends, who were hired to murder Raja – have been sent to judicial custody after ten days of SIT’s interrogation to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy and all those involved.
