RMSC hosts watch party for Rubin Observatory’s first images of universe

“A convex mirror this size, meaning it’s shaped like a dome and not like a bowl, this is one of the largest that’s ever been created,” explained Becky Borelli, L3Harris’ principal fellow. “Standard testing techniques would not work. We had to invent an entirely new way to test the mirror so that they could meet the requirements and they could get the clarity or the focus that they need for their imagery.”
“We love seeing the results of our work and the impact of that work,” Borelli continued. “One of the best things about that is seeing the public get excited about it and come see what we do.”

Guests at Monday’s event got a chance to ask researchers at the observatory about the unique work taking place at the one-of-a-kind facility.
“There are a lot of telescopes the U.S. and Europeans have in the Southern Hemisphere, so there are other telescopes there, but nothing has been done like a survey of this magnitude and this size,” said Fred Moolekamp, a research scientist for the observatory. ”
The observatory is set to survey the entire visible southern sky every few days as part of a decade-long mission.
