Mat-Su business owners brace for more flooding
A flood advisory was posted by the National Weather Service for the Palmer and Butte areas on Sunday. The advisory, which was put out due to snowmelt and shifting in river channels, will last until 8 p.m. Wednesday. Some businesses along the Matanuska River have been forced to close due to the flooding. People living in the area have been told to expect repairs to be complete in the next two weeks.
Cynthia Izon, owner of Outpost Cannabis Dispensary, says some businesses along the Matanuska River have been forced to close due to the flooding.
“Another business further up, they got it even worse,” Izon said. “And then there’s a tire shop and it’s completely flooded. I think they’re still able to get into the property, but no business can happen right now.”

The Outpost and several other businesses sit on Maud Road, where some of the worst flooding has occurred, according to Izon.
“It’s probably about … six inches, seven inches where we’ve already mitigated it,” Izon said. “On the other side of the dike, it’s probably up to my thighs, which is probably about two and a half three feet.”
Despite the damage to the area, Izon says the community has been able to come out and help her build a dike out of sandbags in front of her store.
“We’ve just had so much help and it’s just been a huge blessing to us to have everybody stop and help,” she said.
Izon also told Alaska’s News Source that it’s unclear to her when the flooding will end, but people living in the area have been told to expect repairs to be complete in the next two weeks.
