COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A former North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) Sergeant and business owner is in Columbus County’s jail after an investigation found he was selling drugs out of his store in Whiteville.

According to arrest warrants, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) arrested and charged 46-year-old James Frederick Hinson with:

Eight counts of trafficking opium or heroin

Two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a schedule II controlled substance

Three counts of maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for controlled substance

Two counts of possessing drug paraphernalia

Hinson owned Shipwrecked Seafood and Produce in Whiteville where, arrest warrants allege, he “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did knowingly and intentionally keep and maintain a store… that was used for keeping and selling controlled substance, Oxycodone Hydrochloride.”

Arrest warrants allege that on Jan. 29 and on Feb. 24, Hinson sold “more than 4 Grams but less than 14 Grams of opioid” to an individual.

District Attorney Jon David confirmed with WECT news that Hinson previously worked as a sergeant with NCSHP.

WECT reached out to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office for more information on Hinson’s arrest. However, a spokesperson told us: “At this time, we are not releasing information.”

At this time, Hinson has been released on a $80,000 bond.
