5m ago 10.19 BST Deaths of those waiting for aid in Gaza Strip rises to 25 The Associated Press (AP) reports that the number of people killed by Israeli fire while waiting for aid trucks in central Gaza has risen to 25, according to Palestinian witnesses and hospitals (see 7:25 BST post) The military said it was reviewing reports of casualties from Israeli fire after a group of people approached troops in an area adjunct to the east-west Netzarim corridor, which bisects Gaza.

The Awda hospital in the urban Nuseirat refugee camp, which received the victims, said the Palestinians were waiting for the trucks on the Salah al-Din road south of Wadi Gaza.

Witnesses told the AP that Israeli forces opened fire as people were advancing eastward to be close to the approaching trucks.

“It was a massacre,” said Ahmed Halawa. He said tanks and drones fired at people, “even as we were fleeing. Many people were either martyred or wounded.”

Hossam Abu Shahada, another witness, said drones were flying over the area, watching the crowds first, then there was gunfire from tanks and drones as people were moving eastward. He described a “chaotic and bloody” scene as people were attempting to escape.

He said he saw at least three people lying on the ground motionless and many others wounded as he fled the site.

The Awda hospital said another 146 Palestinians were wounded. Among them were 62 in critical condition, who were transferred to other hospitals in central Gaza, it said.

In the central town of Deir al-Balah, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital said it received the bodies of six people who were killed in the same incident.

What did Iran say about the ceasefire?

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi defended Tehran’s actions. In a post on X, he insisted Iran had only responded to Israeli “aggression.”

“As Iran has repeatedly made clear: Israel launched war on Iran, not the other way around,” Araghchi wrote. “As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations. However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards,” he added.

Araghchi praised Iran’s Armed Forces for their resilience, saying they fought until the last minute and would hold fire only if their conditions were met.

What did Trump say?

Tuesday morning (Indian time), President Trump declared that both Iran and Israel had agreed to the ceasefire. According to Trump, the truce was a two-phase process — Iran would halt military operations first, followed by Israel 12 hours later.

“Israel and Iran have agreed that this is a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE,” Trump wrote on social media. “Iran will officially begin at the 0-hour mark. Twelve hours after that, Israel will implement its own CEASEFIRE. Finally, after 24 hours of mutual respect, the world will bear witness to the official end of this 12-day war.”

“Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, “PEACE!” I knew the time was NOW. The World, and the Middle East, are the real WINNERS! Both Nations will see tremendous LOVE, PEACE, AND PROSPERITY in their futures. They have so much to gain, and yet, so much to lose if they stray from the road of RIGHTEOUSNESS & TRUTH. The future for Israel & Iran is UNLIMITED, & filled with great PROMISE. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!” reads Trump’s post on Truth Social.

US strikes Iranian nuclear sites

The ceasefire announcement followed US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — which Trump claimed had “obliterated” their targets.

Analysis: If the war with Iran is indeed over – attention will refocus on Netanyahu’s failures

Even as Iran and the US officially confirmed a ceasefire, we were left waiting on official word from the Israeli government.

Eventually it said it had agreed to the deal, stating it had removed “a dual immediate existential threat – both in the nuclear and ballistic missile fields”.

Perhaps it was playing wait and see.

And maybe it should have waited longer because only an hour or so later, the IDF said more missiles had been launched by Iran.

We will need to wait to see whether the ceasefire survives the morning, let alone the day.

But if one part of that dual threat clearly remains – ballistic missiles – people will also ask questions of the second, more existential threat – Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

Because the text from the Israeli government wasn’t just a statement, it was an argument.

“In Operation Rising Lion, the State of Israel achieved great historical achievements and placed itself on a par with the world powers,” the government said.

That achievement would belong to the man who has driven affairs, launching this war and then enticing Donald Trump to join it – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It is a stunning achievement and has done much to repair his reputation.

But if the war with Iran is indeed over – a big if – attention will refocus on his failures – to bring back the hostages, dead and alive, still held by Hamas, and to end nearly two years of war in Gaza, a war has brought almost unimaginable suffering and left tens of thousands dead.
