iPhone 17 Pro: Four new camera features are coming this fall

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are expected to get a 48MP telephoto lens. Apple is also rumoured to be adding support for multi-cam video recording. The front-facing TrueDepth camera is also expected to be upgraded to 24MP. The iPhone 17 Air will still be the phone to beat when it comes to camera quality. Apple will unveil the iPhone 17 in early September in New York and Cupertino. It is expected to cost $999 and go on sale later this year in the U.S. and Europe. Apple has not yet confirmed the release date or price of the new iPhone. It will be available in black and white, with a white screen.

Apple’s big iPhone 17 unveiling is just a few months away, with a launch event likely in early September. Here are four new camera features expected to arrive with the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

#1: Upgraded 48MP telephoto

Ever since the iPhone 11 Pro released in 2019, the three-camera array on the back of the iPhone has become standard for Pro models. But each of those three cameras tends to progress at different times.

iPhone 14 Pro, for example, introduced a 48MP sensor for the main “wide” camera lens. Then last year, the iPhone 16 Pro bumped the ultra wide lens to 48MP.

Now, the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to complete the trio by upgrading the telephoto to 48MP too. This change could potentially impact the default zoom option in the Camera app, which is currently 5x.

#2: Multi-cam video recording

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to get an exclusive new feature in the Camera app: support for multi-cam video recording.

Third-party apps have long offered simultaneous video capture, but it’s never before been available in Apple’s own Camera app.

It’s unknown why Apple might make this feature exclusive to new hardware, so perhaps there will be new capabilities with multi-cam recording that haven’t been seen before.

#3: New 24MP TrueDepth front camera

It’s been a while since Apple made noteworthy changes to the iPhone’s front-facing TrueDepth camera.

Fortunately, it sounds like this is the year that changes.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, alongside the more affordable 17 and 17 Air, are all expected to get a brand new 24MP TrueDepth camera.

The current front-facing camera is 12MP, and has been for years.

#4: Redesigned camera ‘island’

The term ‘camera bump’ has been attributed to the iPhone for over a decade, ever since the camera on the iPhone 6 protruded from the body of the device.

Arguably, the word ‘bump’ doesn’t adequately describe recent iPhone designs, which have seen that protrusion grow significantly.

With the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max though, the word ‘island’ might be most appropriate.

Apple plans to expand the camera bump into a full-width camera ‘bar’ or ‘island’ across the back of the iPhone. Certain components like the flash will be moved further away from the cameras, as a result.

We don’t yet know the functional benefits of the redesign, but it’s a safe bet that Apple isn’t making the change without good reason.

iPhone 17 Pro camera features: wrap-up

Camera improvements are always a major highlight with new iPhones, and this year looks to be no different. The ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air will no doubt tempt a lot of Pro users. But when it comes to getting the best camera system possible, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will still be the models to beat.
