Kristaps Porzingis gives 1st health update of Celtics offseason

Kristaps Porzingis posted his first health update on social media since the Celtics were eliminated by the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs. The big man battled an illness during the series, sapping his strength and effectiveness. It’s unclear at this point what his value is on the trade market. The Celtics already dealt with Jrue Holiday to the Blazers for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks in their first big trade of the summer. Considering Boston is still roughly $18 million above the second apron line in the salary cap, more moves are likely on the horizon.

When the Celtics were eliminated by the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs, it was clear Kristaps Porzingis wasn’t healthy. The big man battled an illness during the Knicks series, sapping his strength and effectiveness.

That was the last time fans saw Porzingis on the court. Now, a little over a month since the Celtics were eliminated, Porzingis posted on social media his first health update of the Boston offseason.

“Thanks for all the support and questions about my health,” Porzingis wrote. “I’ve been feeling excellent all offseason and look forward to a healthy and strong European championship tournament with my (national team).”

Porzingis has spoken at length about playing for his native Latvia as part of the EuroBasket 2025 championship. The big man missed out on playing for his home country in past years, so he wanted to prioritize playing for them this summer. The EuroBasket tournament opens in late-August with Latvia as one of the host countries.

“I’m excited about that, playing for my national team and I’ve always performed well the year after national team, not the year, the season after the championships,” Porzingis said after the season-ending loss to the Knicks. “Just because you’re in a rhythm already, which I didn’t have this season. So this summer I expect a nice bounceback for myself and then heading into the season.”

While Porzingis gave a positive health update, it’s unclear if he will be on the Celtics roster at the start of training camp. The big man has been in trade rumors over the past several weeks. The C’s are looking to shed salary to cut payroll, so exploring Porzingis trade packages comes as no surprise.

Porzingis is on an expiring $30.7 million contract for next season. It’s unclear at this point what his value is on the trade market. When healthy, Porzingis is a force on both ends as he can space the floor while protecting the rim. However, as the Celtics and the rest of the league know, availability has been a consistent issue for Porzingis throughout his career.

The Celtics already dealt with Jrue Holiday to the Blazers for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks in their first big trade of the summer. Considering Boston is still roughly $18 million above the second apron line in the salary cap, more moves are likely on the horizon. It remains to be seen if Porzingis will be included in any of those transactions, though he’s certainly been in trade rumors.
