Berkeley County man suspected in four burglaries arrested Monday
Dale Rennie Roberts, 55, was booked on four charges of non-violent burglary 2nd degree. He is suspected in four June burglaries in North Charleston. Roberts has been booked at the Charleston County jail several times since 2014.
55-year-old Dale Rennie Roberts was booked at the Al Cannon Detention Center on four charges of non-violent burglary 2nd degree around 11:45 Monday morning.
Police said the first burglary occurred on June 5 at an Asian restaurant in Cross, where a door had been forced open and a suspect was caught on camera stealing around $300 from the cash drawer. Two businesses were hit on June 16, one on Rivers Avenue and another on Ashley Phosphate Road. This time, the burglar made off with two laptops and more cash. The final incident happened on June 20 at an auto mechanic’s shop on Rivers Avenue that was broken into. In addition to around $150 stolen from a cash register drawer, around $5,200 in damage was done to the business, according to police reports.

Darnell Brown was found guilty of murder in the shooting death of Jagdishbhai Patel. Patel died a couple of weeks after being shot twice in the head through a glass barrier. Brown will serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder conviction, as well as a five-year sentence for the additional possession of a weapon during a violent crime conviction. During sentencing, the judge considered the state’s request for life without parole because they said Brown has two prior serious crimes on record, including armed robbery. The defense also provided that Brown served time for a prior conviction from the ages of 19 to 32, getting out of the department of corrections in February of 2022, just four months before the motel shooting. The prosecution ended their case playing jail calls Brown made during his time in holding. In them, he references the motel, expresses frustration at the management and says there’S no evidence against him.

Patel died a couple of weeks after being shot twice in the head through a glass barrier in the front office of the motel he owned and ran with his wife.
Det. Denis Woods led the investigation.
“There’s a glass divider that I observed to have what appeared to be two distinct bullet holes in the plexiglass that go through into the living quarters and the portion where the person inside the living quarters would stand to conduct their business,” Woods said.
During the trial, Patel’s family testified as witnesses to the shooting. Patel’s wife was on the property and was on the phone with her son, who heard the incident. Patel’s wife testified that she heard the gunshots but did not see who shot her husband.
When asked about any out of the ordinary interactions that day, Patel’s wife told investigators about a guest at the motel named Darnell Brown. She said Brown requested a lock on his door because he was afraid people were accessing his room. Brown’s payment also declined earlier in the day and Patel’s wife said she told him he could stay and pay when he could. Patel testified that her husband would often let people stay even if they could not pay because he felt a duty to help his community.
“We have to follow that lead and in following that lead, we were able to identify the defendant,” Woods said.
Investigators quickly found Brown’s motel reservation card with his license information and an address. Law enforcement quickly went to that address, where they found Brown along with a few other men. They also found two guns on the property and seized a backpack belonging to Brown.
Inside the backpack, investigators found a pair of gloves. SLED testing found Brown and two other unidentified people’s DNA on the inside of the gloves, but the guns on the property were wiped clean of DNA. The gloves and Brown’s right hand tested positive for gunshot residue, meaning it is likely Brown and whoever wore the gloves fired or handled a fired gun that day. A SLED ballistics expert testified with confidence that one of the confiscated guns fired one of the bullets recovered from the motel scene.
The prosecution also presented surveillance video from the area around the time of the crime. Brown can be seen at a grocery store nearby attempting to use an ATM, but his card is declined. Brown is wearing a white shirt and black shorts, carrying a black backpack.

The prosecution ended their case playing jail calls Brown made during his time in holding. In them, he references the motel, expresses frustration at the management and says there’s no evidence against him.
Prosecutor Lemuel Zeigler delivered the closing statement, calling the shooting an execution of an innocent man and saying there’s more than enough evidence to draw the through line that Brown fired the gun.
“The DNA, the gunshot residue, the firearm. They called all that garbage,” Zeigler said.
The defense argued that the investigators did not thoroughly interview and investigate the other men who were at the property where they found the guns. In closings, defense attorney Rodney Davis asked the jury to consider who might be other DNA contributors on the gloves.
The Patel family expressed great thanks to the investigators who worked on the case and told the judge they feel justice is served.

North Charleston Police arrest man in connection with 4 business burglaries

The most recent burglary happened on Friday at the Rivers Avenue Jiffy Lube, where investigators say Robers is accused of taking $350 in cash from a drawer.
Investigators say Roberts also broke into Seasons of Tokyo on Rivers Avenue and stole $300 in cash, and broke into the Claudia Esthetics Institute on Rivers Avenue on June 14 and stole two laptops, a computer case and a book bag.

Police say he is also a suspect in the June 15 burglary of the Glamour Peluqueria Unisex on Ashley Phosphate Road, where $400 in cash was stolen from the register.
He was being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center. Jail records state there are holds on Roberts from Berkeley and Dorchester County.

Police, SWAT arrest man in North Charleston apartment shooting
Davontay Pryor, 31, is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Officers responded just before 6 p.m. to Greentree North Apartments on Otranto Road. A 17-year-old male was found suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police say Pryor was arrested Monday night with assistance from SWAT after he was located inside an apartment.
Officers responded just before 6 p.m. to Greentree North Apartments on Otranto Road for a reported shooting.
When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old male, according to a police report, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Charleston County Emergency Medical Services took the victim to an area hospital for treatment.
A police report showed that the shots fired also damaged a car in the area.

Pryor was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center where he was being held pending a bond hearing.

16 alleged Lowcountry gang leaders indicted on drug trafficking, firearm charges
A federal grand jury returned two multi-count indictments charging over a dozen suspects. The suspects are associated with the Gangster Disciple and Fruit Town Piru street gangs. Authorities seized 60 kilograms of cocaine, 1 kilogram of methamphetamine, 24 pounds of marijuana, 600 grams of fentanyl, 500 grams of heroin, thousands of narcotics pills, as well as 12 firearms. “The indictments send a clear message that we will not tolerate the proliferation of dangerous drugs and firearms in our communities,” U.S. Attorney Stirling for the District of South Carolina said. The case was investigated by the following agencies: FBI Columbia Field Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives, State Law Enforcement Division, and Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. The indictments were filed in the United States District Court in the Gailliard et al indictment, according to court documents. The charges include conspiracy to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine and 50 grams of methamphetamine. They also include conspiring to distribute a quantity of cocaine.

Shawntez Gaillard, 32, of North Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine and 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, as well as two counts of distribution of cocaine and one count of distribution of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.
Bernard Garland Gregory, 36, of North Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute cocaine.
Harold Alvin Champaigne, 49, of North Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, as well as one count of distribution of 500 grams or more of cocaine.
Dominic Jaquan Mack, 44, of North Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine.
Sharon T. Carter, 53, of Summerville, was charged with conspiring to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, as well as one count of possessing with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine.
Mary Nelly Ayala, 48, of Summerville, was charged with conspiring to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine.
Scott Clayton Hollins, 55, of North Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and a quantity of cocaine, as well as one count of possessing with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and quantities of cocaine and fentanyl, and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Quentin Rambert, 34, of North Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine.
Levi Cohen, IV, 30, of Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.
Jabari Cortez Lee, 28, of North Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute a quantity of cocaine.
Marchevis Jefferson, 33, of Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute a quantity of cocaine.
The following charges have been filed in the United States District Court in the Bailey et al indictment, according to court documents.
Jarell Montsho Bailey, 31, of Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, 40 grams or more of fentanyl and 500 grams or more of cocaine, as well as eight counts of distribution of cocaine, four counts of distribution of methamphetamine, three counts of distribution of fentanyl, and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
DaQuan Hakeem Lee, 33, of Charleston, was charged with conspiring to distribute a quantity of cocaine.
Cleo Williams, 36, of Summerville, was charged with conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, as well as one count of distribution of cocaine.
Meri Elizabeth Sottile, 42, of Charleston, is charged with conspiring to distribute a quantity of methamphetamine, as well as one count of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Amanda Danielle Forth, 34, of Charleston, is charged with conspiring to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, as well as possessing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.
