Planning airport outfits can often require as much consideration as what goes into your luggage. On top of practical considerations, like the temperature of a place, how much baggage space you’re allowed and the length of your journey, you want to make sure you still feel like you. So if you, like me, have got your tickets booked and your hotel room reserved, you’re going to need some help with your airport look very soon.

Much like planning an outfit for a special occasion, you may be faced with the dilemma of not knowing which vibe to go for. Do you go for the sporty look with leggings, a logo sweater and comfy fashion trainers? Is it going to be a cool linen shirt, linen trousers and an oversized beach bag that doubles up as a carry-on to avoid being loaded up with luggage? Or do you head to your terminal in a summer dress and sandals as though you’ve already landed at your chosen exotic location? No matter how you play it, we’re here to give you all the inspiration. And where better to start than the ‘90s?

You only have to look back to the likes of supermodels Naomi Campbell (notice the capri pants everyone is wearing this summer), Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford to see how the airport has always been an off-duty runway for celebrities. And while the rest of us are highly unlikely to be swarmed by paparazzi at arrivals, we can still go in with the same approach when it comes to planning a look.

Luckily, the actual runways have also given some guidance, with Gucci offering up the shorts and top co-ord – an easy win when it comes to a plane-to-pool outfit and Balenciaga showing us how to make an oversized hoodie look fashion-forward.

It’s not just the catwalks, either. Airport outfits and travel clothes are all we see on Instagram these days thanks to a newfound tradition that has all our fave influencers and celebrities sharing their pre-flight OOTDs. Yep, fashion bloggers and stylists seem to hit the nail on the head each time, achieving the right balance between looking comfortable and pulled-together, all while seeming as though they’ve not even tried.

The best loungewear brands for nailing jetset style

London-based B Corp Chelsea Peers has been creating its vibrant range of pyjamas from its west London studio for 12 years. All its loungewear is made from 400 gsm organic cotton, which has a silky smoothness and a thickness that feels like wearing a very cosy hug. Cashmere and high-quality wool crafted into sleek yet casual designs is the signature here, resulting in dream travel wardrobe staples. These are great for every day, not just when flying, and you’ll find yourself wearing these pieces once you reach your destination and when you’re back home, too. We love the 100 per cent cashmere Indigo belted onesie for its flattering cut and sophisticated simplicity. The pre-shrunk cotton equestrian jersey and sweatpants set is our top pick from this loungEWear brand for its subtle logo, soft cream colourway, and 100% composition. The 365 heavyweight hoodie from Earth-positive brand Pangaia is something you need in your life. And they’re oh-so comfortable for wearing on a long-haul flight or spending hours in airport lounges.

You really can’t go wrong with this loungewear brand’s organic cotton co-ord – a 100 per cent organic cotton cropped oversized sweater with a drawstring waist and snug thumbhole cuffs, and matching wide leg trousers. This has become one of our favourite travel uniforms as not only does it look and feel great, but the fabric, while weighty, has been crafted with loopback lining to add airiness – perfect for sliding temperatures in-flight, and for weather shifts between your country of departure and destination.

Chelsea Peers

London-based B Corp Chelsea Peers has been creating its vibrant range of pyjamas from its west London studio for 12 years. However, while the brand’s eclectic patterns and flared leggings are notably travel-friendly, it’s the British firm’s latest loungewear launch that’s caught our attention recently. The most striking thing about its casualwear isn’t the velvety softness, although that’s very much appreciated, or the figure-skimming cuts that turn even your comfiest clothes into something flattering and stylish. No, what really sets the brand’s pieces apart is the weight of the cotton. All its loungewear is made from 400 gsm organic cotton, which has a silky smoothness and a thickness that feels like wearing a very cosy hug. Plus, with a choice of five chic, understated colours to choose from, it’s easy to mix and match or stock up on multiple sets.

Pangaia

If you know you’re prone to getting chilly on a flight, the 365 heavyweight hoodie from Earth-positive brand Pangaia is something you need in your life. Pair with their midweight trackpants or straight-leg trousers and you’re good to go. As a brand known for using innovative, bio-based materials, it should come as no surprise that this set is made from 50 per cent organic cotton and 50 per cent recycled cotton. Other material options include their plant-based nylon and linen ranges. For a sharper silhouette, take a look at the DNA line, which, along with the brand-standard selection of summery hues, has been crafted with a unique barrel-leg cut for a modern, elevated style. You could even get a set for the whole family, as Pangaia makes their colour-popping separates for women, men and children.

Madeleine Thompson

Not all of the best loungewear is made in athleisure style, as the clothing from British knitwear brand Madeleine Thompson proves. Cashmere and high-quality wool crafted into sleek yet casual designs is the signature here, resulting in dream travel wardrobe staples. Cashmere clothing is always an investment, but it’s also one of the best fabrics to wear on a flight as it’s incredibly soft, breathable, thermoregulating and insulating. Also, with good care, these timeless styles will last you a lifetime. Most Madeleine Thompson sets, like the Elisabetta top and Maria pants, are 70 per cent cashmere and 30 per cent wool, for a warm and cosy finish with cashmere’s signature softness. But we also love the 100 per cent cashmere Indigo belted onesie for its flattering cut and sophisticated simplicity.

Sporty & Rich

The name says it all, really. Athleisure-luxe label Sporty & Rich offers a range of sportswear that truly gives a sporty and rich aesthetic. The sets are all the classic easy-breezy tracksuit style you’d expect from sporting club merchandise, but with a more fashion-meets-cheeky feel. And they’re oh-so comfortable for wearing on a long-haul flight or spending hours in airport lounges. The pre-shrunk cotton equestrian jersey and sweatpants set is our top pick from this loungewear brand for its subtle logo, soft cream colourway, and 100 per cent cotton composition.

Cos

Known for a minimalist aesthetic and global inspiration, Cos is the place to head to on the high street for fashion-forward, finance-friendly in-flight clothing. Men and women alike have so much to choose from here, so you could easily piece together your own casual and comfortable outfit. We love the straight-leg jersey joggers and polo sweatshirt for men, as well as the denim wash hoodie and wide-leg joggers co-ord for women. With such a strong year-round loungewear offering, including cashmere, you’ll find yourself wearing these pieces once you reach your destination and when you’re back home, too. These are great for every day, not just when flying.

Asceno

Everyone here at Traveller rejoiced when pyjama-inspired fashion entered the scene. We’ve always wanted to wear our cosiest nightwear on a flight (especially those we’d like to try and sleep on), and now it’s not only socially acceptable, but actively stylish. Asceno is unbeatable when it comes to smart loungewear that leans heavily into the off-duty, pyjama aesthetic, so it’s our go-to for this look. The oat-toned Aurelia trousers and London shirt, made from 95 per cent lambswool and 5 per cent cashmere, sourced from UK mills, are about as easygoing as it gets, but thanks to the tasteful cut of both pieces, you’ll still look effortlessly put together as you glide through security.

Free People

Since their launch in 1984, Free People has become famed for a free-spirited boho style that can be spotted a mile off. Relaxed, oversized fits, earthy tones, flowing fabrics and eclectic vibes make up the signature look that can be seen across the entire range, including one of their best loungewear offerings, the On The Run set. As expected from the brand, this and many of their other loungewear sets look and feel lived-in, in a laid-back, cool-girl way. Their matching sets, like this one, tend to be baggy, so they feel both flattering and comfortable at the same time.

Johnstons of Elgin

Scottish family-run company, Johnstons of Elgin, is a fashion editor favourite and the one brand the fashion world all looks to when searching for the finest cashmere clothing. The biggest brands in the fashion industry place orders with them, as their world-famous cashmere is truly best-in-class. Additionally, their styles are decidedly contemporary. You could wear just about anything from this brand and feel exceptionally snug while looking refined, but for us, the high-rise culottes and classic cashmere V-neck is the epitome of in-flight style.

Onitsuka Tiger

Japanese-born Onitsuka Tiger was founded in 1949 but later changed its name to Asics, famed for its Olympian-favoured, high-performance trainers. After relaunching in 2002, Onitsuka Tiger has grown into an all-singing sportswear line with serious fashion credentials, collaborating with Valentino in 2020, and launching at Milan Fashion Week for its SS23 collection. It’s loungewear fuses sturdy performance materials with clean-cut Japanese design, such as this embroidered hoodie and joggers set.

Bamford

Launched by Carol Bamford in their Cotswold farm shop and spa, British label Bamford brings the same care and comfort of their wellness treatments to their exquisite quality cashmere clothing. The whole line is baby soft and oh-so huggable, but at the same time incredibly smart, making this range an impeccable choice for on-the-go loungewear.
