(WLUK) — About 1.6 million Wisconsinites are expected to hit the road to celebrate Independence Day.

covers the nine-day period from June 28-July 6. The organization says that better reflects actual holiday travel trends.

The 1.47 million people from Wisconsin projected to drive represents an increase of 36,000, or 2.5%, from 2024. Another 59,000 are expected to fly and 100,000 will take buses, trains or cruises.

“Independence Day is one of the most popular times for travel, with Americans eager to take advantage of summer vacation opportunities,” Debbie Haas, vice president of AAA Travel, said in a news release. “This year, we’re seeing strong demand for road trips, flights, and cruises, especially with the holiday falling on a Friday. This is allowing travelers to extend their getaways and make lasting memories with loved ones.”

Nationally, AAA forecasts a record 61.6 million Americans to hit the road around the Fourth of July, up 2.2% from last year.

AAA says it is closely watching gas prices, especially in the wake of tension in the Middle East.
