Tourist Confirmed Dead After Falling Into Active Volcano
Juliana Marins, 26, was climbing Mount Rinjani, on the island of Lombok, with a group and tour guide when she plummeted 1,600 feet into the volcano. She miraculously survived the slide down the mountain, and teams monitored her through drone footage as they launched rescue efforts. Marins was stuck on the mountain for three days as rescuers rushed to retrieve her. Her family accused the Indonesian government of creating a fake video of her rescue and falsely claiming that Marins had been given food and water after 17 hours. Authorities denied the claims, adding that rescue efforts were hampered by the rough terrain and poor weather. The mountain, the second tallest in Indonesia, is a popular tourist destination but is a deadly place to hike, and authorities say trekkers need to be thoroughly prepared in order to ascend. The trek takes about five days, and it took authorities four days to retrieve a Portuguese man who fell to his death just last month.
The family of Juliana Marins, 26, confirmed her death on Tuesday morning.
“Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was,” they said. “With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.”
Marins, who was traveling around Southeast Asia from her native Brazil, was climbing Mount Rinjani, on the island of Lombok, with a group and tour guide when she plummeted 1,600 feet into the volcano.
She miraculously survived the slide down the mountain, and teams monitored her through drone footage as they launched rescue efforts. On Saturday, rescuers heard screams for help.
Marins was stuck on the mountain, motionless, for three days as rescuers rushed to retrieve her. But she continued to slip further into the volcano, and initial attempts to reach her via helicopter were called off due to thick fog.
Marins’ family panicked as the teams kept getting closer before suddenly being pulled back.
“A whole day and they advanced only 250 meters below, there were 350 meters left to reach Juliana, and they retreated,” her family said in a statement on Instagram. “Once again! Another day! We need help, we need the rescue to reach Juliana urgently!”
Authorities prepared Tuesday to reach Marins, equipped with 6,500 feet of rope and a helicopter. Muhamad Hariyadi, the head of the search and rescue office in the nearby city, told The New York Times that the operation was “very risky.”
Sadly, Marins did not make it. The young woman’s family, who said they learned about the disaster through social media, said Marins “got very tired” during her hike and asked her guide “to stop for a while.” But the guide decided to continue without her.
She spent about an hour resting alone before slipping sometime around sunrise.
“She didn’t know where to go,” her sister said. “She didn’t know what to do. When the guide came back because he saw that she was taking too long, he saw that she had fallen down there.”
Her family added that Indonesian rescue workers were originally unprepared to reach her. They also accused the Indonesian government of creating a fake video of her rescue and falsely claiming that Marins had been given food and water after 17 hours. Hariyadi denied the claims, adding that rescue efforts were hampered by the rough terrain and poor weather.

Marins’ last hours before her fall were spent in frustration. She and another tourist who had become a friend had completed the first part of the trail but were unable to see the view from the top, which was fogged in.
“We did it for the view,” Marins said in a video that she sent to family and friends.
Her companion on the trail, Italian tourist Federica Matricardi, was also frustrated by the lack of a panorama.
“I met Juliana the day before the trip,” she said. “We were both traveling alone. We walked all the way to the top. It was very difficult.”
Mount Rinjani is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano at 12,000 feet. It is a well-frequented tourist destination and known for its sunrise views and thrilling scenes of the wilderness below. It is spectacularly beautiful, complete with a deep blue volcanic lake sitting within the caldera, about 6,500 feet above sea level.

But despite the stunning sights, it is a deadly place to hike. The journey takes about five days, and Indonesian authorities say trekkers need to be thoroughly prepared in order to ascend. A Malaysian man died after falling down the mountain just last month. In 2022, a Portuguese man also fell to his death and it took authorities four days to retrieve him.
The team looking for Marins said they saw a glimpse of light from a flashlight while searching for the young hiker. But the visibility was poor and the fog prevented them from seeing anything clearly.

Family Furious Over ‘Botched’ Mission to Save Tourist in Volcano
Juliana Marins, 26, fell while hiking Mount Rinjani in Lombok, Indonesia. She was trapped for four days screaming for help after slipping and plummeting more than 1,600 feet. Indonesian authorities promised to try and retrieve her, but Marins’ family quickly grew suspicious. Marins’ family claim the search and rescue team created a fake video of her rescue and received false claims that she had been given food and water. The family said that the Indonesian authorities were unprepared and tried to reach her with a rope that was shorter than necessary and couldn’t be reached in good visibility. They also claimed that local officials released a video depicting a rescue attempt that was “not an actual rescue,” and that Marins was not given food or water during the rescue. The Brazilian publicist and dancer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, died on Tuesday after falling off the cliff of Mount RinJani, Indonesia’s second-largest volcano. The rescue teams’ efforts to save Marins were unsuccessful.
The world watched anxiously as officials launched a multi-day attempt to save Marins from her tragic fate before her family announced this week that the efforts were unsuccessful.
“Juliana suffered great negligence on the part of the rescue team,” her family wrote on social media Wednesday. “If the team had reached her within the estimated time of 7 hours, Juliana would still be alive. Juliana deserved much more! Now we are going to seek justice for her, because that is what she deserves! Don’t give up on Juliana!”
Marins, 26, was trapped for four days screaming for help after slipping and plummeting more than 1,600 feet from the crater rim of Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second largest volcano. But despite authorities vowing to try and rescue her, Marins family quickly realized the shocking truth: Marins had been left for dead.

Marins’ family claim the search and rescue team created a fake video of her rescue and received false claims that she had been given food and water.
“The Indonesian government is lying, and the embassy is not verifying the facts before informing us,” her sister Marianna said. “She is not receiving supplies.”

Marins’ father was also heartbroken. “The embassy is not offering any support. The Brazilian government, which we’ve tried to contact, is also not helping us,” he told Brazil’s TV Globo. “This is very sad and extremely serious. She is a 26-year-old girl, a Brazilian citizen, and no one—except family and friends—seems to care.”
Marins’ nightmare fall took place Saturday. She had grown “very tired” during her hike, according to her sister, and asked her guide to “stop for a while.”
But the guide ditched Marins anyway, leaving her to fend for herself.
“They continued on, and the guide didn’t stay with her,” her sister said.

Exhausted and weak, Marins was on her own for an hour as her fellow five hikers and guide abandoned her. Sometime around sunrise, she tumbled and fell thousands of feet off the cliff face.
“She didn’t know where to go. She didn’t know what to do,” Marins’ sister said. “When the guide came back because he saw that she was taking too long, he saw that she had fallen down there.”
Miraculously, Marins was “safe, but in shock,” according to witnesses. They were able to hear her screams and see a glimpse of her flashlight.

But horror quickly ensued. Marins’ family was completely left out of the loop, and they only heard about their loved ones’ crisis through social media. Although Indonesian authorities promised to try and retrieve her, Marins’ family quickly grew suspicious.
“We’re living in a nightmare here,” said Marins’ friend.
Authorities were giving updates that were “conflicting, delayed, and often false information.”

The teams’ efforts to save Marins kept getting held up. The visibility was poor, the terrain was rough and the weather conditions were unpredictable. Along with things out of their control, Marins’ family said that the Indonesian authorities were unprepared.
“At first, they tried to reach her with a rope that was shorter than necessary and couldn’t,” Marins’ sister said.
She claimed that local officials released a video depicting a staged rescue. The footage was “not during an actual rescue attempt.”

Marins’ family turned to social media to express their desperation. “Juliana is NEEDING HELP! We don’t know the state of her health!” they wrote. “She still has no water, food or warm clothes for three days!”
Marins sadly slipped further into the volcano as teams rushed to reach her. By Tuesday, it was too late.
“Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was,” her family said on social media. “With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.”
The Mount Rinjani National Park administration offered condolences to the family.
“The entire family of the Mount Rinjani National Park Office expresses its deepest condolences on the death of Juliana De Souza Pereira Marins, a Brazilian climber who passed away on the hiking trail in the Mount Rinjani National Park area,” they wrote on social media.
Family blast ‘botched’ rescue of Brazilian dancer who died in volcano as her body is FINALLY retrieved
The body of Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, 26, was removed from the depths of Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second largest volcano, on Wednesday. The 26-year-old slipped and slid hundreds of feet down the volcano during a hike on Saturday. Her family had accused rescuers of not doing enough to save her. The National Search and Rescue Agency appeared to distance itself from any culpability Wednesday while sharing a series of photos on Instagram claiming to show first responders retrieving her body. The agency then deleted the post amid ongoing questions by Juliana’s family and criticism pouring in from around the globe. Marins had joined six tourists and a tour guide for the $150 excursion on the active volcano located on Lombok Island, but was separated from the group due to fatigue and was left behind by the tour guide. According to Indonesian government data, eight people have died and 108 have suffered injuries while hiking in the Mount RinJani region since 2020. Just last month, a Malaysian hiker reportedly died in fall on the mountain.
Rescuers removed the body of dancer Juliana Marins, 26, from the depths of Mount Rinjani on Lambok Island Wednesday, after she slipped and slid hundreds of feet down the volcano during a hike on Saturday.
Search teams had said they faced challenges from bad weather and low visibility over the ensuing days, with Juliana’s family accusing rescuers of not doing enough to save her.
By the time she was found on Tuesday – after earlier drone footage appeared to show her alive and moving after the fall – it was too late.

‘Trekking to Mount Rinjani is an Extreme Tourism Sport,’ a caption on one post read.
‘Be respectful, understand limitations. When accident happend [sic], do not blame rescuers unless you have walked in their shoes!’ The agency then deleted the post amid ongoing questions by Juliana’s family and criticism pouring in from around the globe.

Her grieving loved ones announced Wednesday that they would be ‘seeking justice’ after the tourist’s death.
‘Juliana suffered great negligence on the part of the rescue team,’ her family said in a statement. ‘If the team had reached her within the estimated time of 7 hours, Juliana would still be alive.
‘Juliana deserved much more! Now we are going to seek justice for her, because that is what she deserves! Don’t give up on Juliana!’
The family’s claim comes as observers, particularly those in Brazil, continued to flood the National Search and Rescue Agency’s social media feeds with criticism.
As the tragic saga unfolded, Juliana’s relatives frantically pleaded for rescuers to do more – even accusing them of faking a video that claimed to show search teams reaching the hiker and providing food, water and warm clothing.
‘This is not true,’ said her sister, Mariana, at the time, noting that the family was informed rescue ropes were too short to reach her.
‘All the videos that were made are lies, including the one of the rescue arriving at her. The video was forged to look like that, along with this message associated with it.
‘We even celebrated. It was a shock to find out that it was a lie.’

Juliana’s family had also slammed the lack of communication between Indonesian and Brazilian authorities, and questioned why Mount Rinjani National Park remained open to visitors during the search.
According to Indonesian government data, eight people have died and 108 have suffered injuries while hiking in the Mount Rinjani region since 2020.
Just last month, a Malaysian hiker reportedly died in fall on the mountain.
On Wednesday, a Brazilian geologist told CNN that the park should have been better prepared.
‘From the moment we access a park where the conditions of risk, terrain, and climate are known, we expect that both the guides, monitors, and the location have a plan to deal with an emergency situation,’ said Marcelo Gramani, of the Institute of Technological Research in Brazil.
Juliana, who hailed from just outside Rio de Janeiro, had joined six tourists and a tour guide for the $150 excursion on the active volcano.
She separated from the group due to fatigue and was left behind by the tour guide, her sister told Brazilian news magazine Fantastico.
‘We found out about this after contacting people who work at the park,’ Mariana said. ‘Juliana was in this group, but she got very tired and asked to stop for a while. They kept going, and the guide didn’t stay with her.’

‘She didn’t know where to go, she didn’t know what to do,’ Mariana added. ‘When the guide came back, because he saw that she was taking too long, he saw that she had fallen down there.’
The guide, identified as Ali Musthofa, told Brazilian outlet O Globo that he never left Juliana behind.
‘Actually, I didn’t leave her, but I waited three minutes in front of her. After about 15 or 30 minutes, Juliana didn’t show up,’ the 20-year-old said.
‘I looked for her at the last resting place, but I couldn’t find her. I told her I would wait for her ahead. I told her to rest. I realized [she had fallen] when I saw the light of a flashlight on a ravine about 150 meters deep and heard Juliana’s voice calling for help. I told her I would help her. I tried desperately to tell Juliana to wait for help.’
Musthofa said that he reported the accident to the tour agency he is employed by and told them to request emergency assistance.
Italian tourist Federica Matricardi told Fantastico that she met Juliana last Friday and recalled how difficult it was to make it to the top of Mount Rinjai.
The pair of solo travelers appeared together in a video just before Juliana fell, smiling and joking about the cloudy view.
‘We did it for the view,’ Juliana said.

The publicist and dancer, from Niterói, near Rio de Janeiro, was trapped for four days after she fell while trekking up Indonesia’s second-highest volcano.
Juliana’s sister, Marianna, told Fantástico that her tragic sibling “got very tired” during her hike and asked her guide “to stop for a while”.
But in a shocking revelation, she said that said the guide decided to continue without Marins, leaving her on her own.
Marianna said: “They continued on, and the guide didn’t stay with her.”
She told how her sister was doing the hike with a small group of five hikers and just one guide.
Marianna explained that her sister spent an entire hour resting alone before her horror slip at sunrise.
The late tourist’s sister said: “She didn’t know where to go. She didn’t know what to do.
“When the guide came back because he saw that she was taking too long, he saw that she had fallen down there.”
The guide was reportedly able to see Juliana’s flashlight, nearly 1,000 feet down the treacherous cliff.
Her initial cries for help were reportedly heard on Saturday, with witnesses saying she was “safe, but in shock”.
In another heartbreaking detail, a friend of Juliana reportedly said that the hiker’s family learned she was missing from social media.

Juliana’s pal also alleged that Indonesian officials even provided conflicting updates about the tourist’s status when she was missing.
They received horrifying false claims that she had been found and provided with food and water.
The friend said: “We’re living in a nightmare here.”
And they described the updates they were given by authorities as “conflicting, delayed, and often false information”.
Marianna said of the rescue efforts which were hampered by poor weather: “At first, they tried to reach her with a rope that was shorter than necessary and couldn’t.”
The family also slammed Indonesian and Brazilian authorities.
Juliana’s sister raged during the rescue mission: “The Indonesian government is lying, and the embassy is not verifying the facts before informing us. She is not receiving supplies.

She also alleged that videos released by local officials as showing a rescue were staged.
Marianna said that the footage was taken “not during an actual rescue attempt”.
Her family also previously said on social media: “Juliana is NEEDING HELP! We don’t know the state of her health!
“She still has no water, food or warm clothes for three days!”
Juliana’s father, Manoel Marins, also blasted the Brazilian government for its lack of involvement.
He told Brazil’s TV Globo: “The embassy is not offering any support. The Brazilian government, which we’ve tried to contact, is also not helping us.
“This is very sad and extremely serious. She is a 26-year-old girl, a Brazilian citizen, and no one — except family and friends — seems to care.”
Heartbreaking footage showed the tourist smiling and joking with her pal before fatally falling into an active volcano crater.
She had been backpacking through Southeast Asia since February, documenting her solo trip on social media.
Her tragic final moments were shared by a pal she met along her travels – and they showed Juliana at the top of a summit just days before her death.

Other shots revealed the dancer jumping into picturesque sinkholes and exploring caverns.
In the last video, Juliana and her friend Frederica, jibed about the view at the top of Mount Rinjani as it had been concealed by cloud cover.
“I met Juliana the day before the trip. We were both traveling alone. We made it all the way to the top. It was very difficult.
“We climbed about 1,500 meters,” Federica told G1 after the horror.
In the clip Federica says sarcastically: “The view is amazing, you can tell it was so worth it.”
Juliana jokes: “Yeh, we did it for the view, so I’m glad, amazing!”.
This comes as distressing drone footage was also released which revealed Juliana trapped in a pit on the volcano as rescuers tried to reach her.
Tourists on the Indonesian island of Lombok spotted her inside the crater after hearing screams for help.
Juliana survived the fall but was unable to climb back up due to her injuries and had no access to food, water or shelter.
The first rescue team was dispatched at 2.32pm local time on Saturday.
After the initial alarm was raised, six more rescue teams tried to reach her.
They were supported by two helicopters and equipment including an industrial drill.

Cold temperatures and fog made search efforts on Sunday harder to navigate but a drone was able to locate Juliana.
However, when rescuers descended the volcano on Monday, she was no longer in the same spot.
Rescuers finally located her on Tuesday, but it was tragically too late.
Her family confirmed her death on social media, writing: “Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was.
“With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive.
“We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.”
Earlier this week, Nikolas Osman, spokesperson for the East Lombok Police, said Juliana was hiking in a group and fell after suffering fatigue.
He said: “While heading to the summit of Rinjani on the way to the Cemara Tunggal area, the victim experienced fatigue and the guide at that time advised her to rest.
“Then the five guests in the tour group were taken by the guide to continue the journey.
“However, by the time he returned to fetch her, the Brazilian woman was already missing.”
Indonesian authorities deployed three helicopters to try and rescue Juliana, according to West Nusa Tenggara governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal.
Iqbal told reporters: “One helicopter from the Indonesian Armed Forces and national search and rescue agency (Basarnas) is expected to arrive at Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport (BIZAM) around 2pm local time today.”
Before the incident, Juliana had visited Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.
