MAYVILLE, N.D. (KFYR) – The annual North Dakota Shrine Bowl is often a last chance for high school athletes to put on pads to represent their hometown. However, for South Border’s Levi Buchholz, playing in the game represented a glimpse into the future and a way to reflect on how much he appreciates the past.

“Honestly I never thought I would touch a football field again, and just to be back is incredible,” Buchholz said.

During week three of the regular season in his senior year, Buchholz completely tore his ACL and lateral meniscus in the fourth quarter of a 67-6 win.

“The journey has been long, but it’s worth it,” Buchholz said.

It took just five months for doctors to clear him for physical activity. Buchholz said overcoming that kind of obstacle adds extra meaning to playing in the Shrine Bowl.

“I practically couldn’t walk, and I had to learn how to walk again,” Buchholz said. “Every day was a little step closer, and to think I’m nine months in now. Not a lot of people get back on a football field nine months from an injury I had.”

Next, he turns his attention to college, where he’ll be practicing and playing in the same spot as the Shrine Bowl.

“It’s a great glimpse of what the future could bring,” Buchholz said.

The future is bright for the Mayville State Comet, and it’s all a product of what he’s been through to get to this level.

“Just the opportunity to play football again,” Buchholz said. “I just love football, and I’ve always loved it. Just to be back on a football field with a group of guys and a willingness to win, everything is going to be great.”
