Quality sleep might matter more than quantity of sleep. It’s more than just clocking 8 hours in bed. It’s about how well your body moves through each sleep stage and whether you’re getting the kind of rest that leaves you feeling restored. The best sleep trackers take the guesswork out of bedtime by monitoring your habits and offering real insights into what’s helping — or hurting — your sleep.

I tested a range of trackers to find out which ones actually live up to the hype. From smart rings and watches to non-wearable options that slide under your mattress, each pick on this list offers something useful. Read on to see my experience testing the best sleep trackers on the market.

What is the best overall sleep tracker?

My favorite overall sleep tracker is the Whoop 4.0 Band, thanks to its in-depth sleep information and personalized recommendations. With no buttons or screens on the band, Whoop looks simple at first glance. The band’s five LEDs, body temperature sensors and photodiodes provide valuable insight into your sleep. A few of our CNET sleep experts have been using Whoop for months and have found it to provide the most reliable and accurate sleep data.

CNET’s sleep experts say the Whoop provides reliable sleep data. Aly Lopez/CNET

Taylor Leamey, senior sleep writer, tested the AI Whoop Coach and found it intuitive and a great feature if you’re already interested in the band. You can ask the AI coach anything and it will give you personalized answers and insights based on your sleep data. With Whoop, you get sleep data and assistance with interpreting everything.

Aly Lopez/CNET Whoop 4.0 Best overall sleep tracker $239 at Amazon Our take: The Whoop 4.0 sleep tracker is for those who want to track their sleep and their exercise. It’s for anyone who wants personalized sleep insights. It has an integrated coach that provides personalized recommendations, like when to go to bed or mindful breathing techniques, based on your sleep data. Whoop also is for those who don’t want a screen to distract them at night. The review: “Of all the sleep trackers out there, Whoop gives me the most in-depth data on my sleep, strain and recovery,” said sleep writer Taylor Leamey. With Whoop’s advanced AI-powered technology and comprehensive data analysis, it is the ultimate sleep tracker. Whoop provides excellent insights and monitors key sleep metrics like sleep stages, heart-rate variability, respiratory rate and hours of sleep and restorative sleep, helping you better understand your sleep patterns. It’s one of the most accurate we’ve tested and the battery lasts four to five days without charging. The app is more in-depth than just about any of the trackers I tested. If you’re interested in the nitty gritty of how your body sleeps and responds to strain, I can’t recommend the Whoop enough. I have to admit it’s pretty expensive and I didn’t love that there isn’t a watch face on the strap. That said, the data and accuracy of Whoop make it the best sleep tracker you can get. Caroline Igo/CNET Oura Ring Gen4 Best wearable sleep tracker $349 at Amazon $349 at Oura Our take: Oura Ring is an alluring, comfortable option for those who want convenient health and sleep monitoring without the discomfort of a bulky wrist wearable. Especially if you need a high-tech, lightweight device to fit into your existing wardrobe, Oura’s sleek design is snug and available in six finishes. In addition to providing overall sleep readings, Oura Ring is a great option for those who want insights into other aspects of health like stress, menstrual cycles and illness monitoring. The review: I wear my Oura Ring every day, and I often forget I even have it on. It’s become a part of my daily routine. I wake up and check my sleep score, my readiness score for the day and cycle insights. I love that it automatically tracks activity and can be integrated with apps like Apple Health, Strava and Google Fit. It has excellent battery life — Oura claims it lasts up to seven days but I’ve found it’s more like five to six days, which is still great. Over time, the Oura Ring gets to know your body and provides highly accurate insights and customized reports to help you understand your overall health and well-being. Pros: Comfortable, sleek ring design

Caroline Igo/CNET Samsung Galaxy Ring Best sleep tracker for Android users $400 at Samsung Our take: The Samsung Galaxy Ring is for Android users who want to consolidate their devices, track their sleep and manage their health vitals on their finger. For snore detection, the Galaxy Ring is a better option than Oura (which doesn’t have this feature). It is also great for those who want a device to automatically track workouts, activities and other health metrics such as heart rate, blood oxygen and temperature. The review: I found the Samsung Galaxy Ring to be just as great as Oura. The Galaxy Ring tracker measures all the same vitals as Oura, except for HRV. The Samsung ring has extra features such as snore detection and gesture compatibility. My favorite aspect of this ring is that it’s slightly lighter and thinner than Oura. I also loved that all the time I was wearing it, it never scratched once. Its charging case is beautifully designed and opens and closes for easy storage. The price is higher than Oura but Samsung lets you trade in devices to bring the price down. Pros: Comfortable, sleek and concave ring design

Taylor Leamey/CNET Fitbit Inspire 3 Best tracker watch $100 at Amazon $100 at Best Buy Our take: The Fitbit Inspire 3 is a great sleep tracker for someone who wants to measure physical activity and sleep data without a bulky device on their wrist. This Fitbit’s sleek design, small digital screen and impressive battery life of up to 10 days is available for only $100 — by far one of the most affordable sleep trackers. It is best for those who want to measure heart rate, blood oxygen levels, time spent in different sleep stages and overall sleep quality at night, and for those who want to track steps, workouts, calories burned and more during the day. The review: “I’ve had several Fitbit smartwatches through the years, though the Inspire 3 is by far my favorite. It’s got all the features you want but is way less clunky,” said sleep writer Taylor Leamey. The app is user-friendly and easy to navigate. You won’t get any advanced insights but the Fitbit is a dependable option for those starting their sleep-tracking journey. I also appreciate that the Fitbit Inspire 3 provides a daily stress management score and offers mindfulness sessions that teach healthier ways to respond to stress. You also can’t beat the price. You don’t have to pay for the $10 per month subscription to use the sleep and workout tracking features, but you will need the subscription to access more advanced offerings such as workout classes, mindfulness sessions, recipes and more. For me, Fitbit is a classic option for people who want a straightforward tracker. Not to mention, Fitbit has several watch options in its lineup. Pros: Simple, slim design

Caroline Igo/CNET Garmin Forerunner 165 Best sleep tracker for sleep and fitness $200 at Amazon $200 at Garmin $200 at Best Buy Our take: The Garmin Forerunner 165 will be enjoyed by runners like me who require GPS to track their runs and who want insights into their sleep and recovery. With Sleep Coach, sleep score and nap detection features, Garmin tracks sleep cycles, duration, HRV, restless moments, resting heart rate and respiration rates. These metrics apply to its recovery feature, which lets me know how long I should rest between workouts. This Garmin tracker is best for those serious about their sleep and fitness. The review: As a runner myself, I used my Garmin to train for a half marathon. It recommends workouts, slow days and amount of rest based on my vitals and restorative sleep from the night before. The watch itself is a bit bulky to sleep with but it’s something I got used to (however, I do prefer a ring tracker at night). Garmin claims the battery life is about 11 days but I use the watch every day and found it was more like 8 days. I really like its daily sleep and body battery scores and I found it to be one of the most accurate in tracking my total hours of sleep. Pros: Features include sleep score, Sleep Coach and a breakdown of sleep quality

Automatically tracks naps and recommends an amount of sleep for the night

Battery lasts up to 11 days Cons: Doesn’t take into account gender and hormone cycles when recommending amount of sleep

Caroline Igo/CNET Withings Scan Watch 2 Best sleep tracker without a subscription $350 at Withings $350 at Amazon $350 at Best Buy Our take: The Withings Scan Watch 2 is a high-quality sleep tracker for those who don’t want to pay a subscription on top of a pricey device. I appreciate that it has a thinner, more traditional watch look. The clock’s face is conventional with a tiny screen that can display the digital time, date, steps and other health vitals. This watch is for sleepers who don’t want a distracting LED screen at night but want to check some vitals without opening the app on a phone. The review: I enjoy the look and feel of the Withings Scan Watch 2. It is unlike any other smartwatch that I have tested. Its smooth and streamlined design makes it comfortable to wear during the day and use during the night. I find its app to be user-friendly, simple and more appealing than most. Its sleep-tracking features are similar to other smartwatches on the market, but there are other in-depth health metrics, such as ECG measurements, AFib detection and body temperature during workouts. While this sleep tracker is a bit pricey, I find it worth it for the extra health features. Pros: Sleek design, similar to classic watches rather than smartwatches

Very small screen that doesn’t bother you during the night

30-day battery life Cons: Premium wristbands are an extra charge

More expensive than other smartwatches

You also need to have the budget for a pricey, luxury device. This mattress cover fits over a bed like a fitted sheet and contains a system of wires that pumps water throughout the cover. When testing, I found that it heats and cools sleepers to mimic my body’s natural temperature cycles during sleep. This high-tech product is best for those who want a nonwearable sleep tracker to help with night sweats and measure sleep stages, overall sleep quality, heart rate, HRV, breathing rate and snoring. The review: I can’t sleep without the Eight Sleep Pod 3 Cover. Its ability to heat and cool me throughout the night is unmatched. By detecting my heart rate, breathing, movement and sleep stages, it gives detailed reports in the morning on my sleep quality. It’s great for temperature control, though the data can be a little wonky. I’ve found that my sleep scores are higher than they should be sometimes. I think sometimes it thinks I’m asleep when I’m really awake (or when my pets are in my bed). On top of that, its high price is a huge drawback. It’s for those who are significantly interested in sleep. Pros: Cooling features help hot sleepers from sweating

Caroline Igo/CNET Withings Sleep Tracking Mat Best non-wearable sleep tracker $130 at Amazon $130 at Best Buy $130 at Withings Our take: If you would rather not wear a sleep tracker to bed and an Eight Sleep mattress cover is outside your budget, you may enjoy the Withings Sleep Tracking Mat. This thin mat fits underneath my mattress and I didn’t even know it was there. It has pneumatic and sound sensors that measure my heart rate, respiratory rate, movements, snoring and sleep cycles. It’s important to note that the Withings Sleep Tracking Mat is powered through a USB cable and must be plugged in. The review: I like easily viewing my sleep data in the free Withings app through its Wi-Fi sync. The app also automatically generates a sleep diary that includes my sleep score each night. As for its tracking abilities, I did find that the Tracking Mat often picked up my dog sleeping near my pillow before I even got into bed. Keep this in mind if you sleep with a partner or a pet. I also often got higher readings with the Sleep Mat compared to other wearable sleep trackers. Devices that go on your fingers are wrists are going to be a bit more accurate but the price and ease of this Sleep Mat can’t be beat. Pros: Automatically compiles your data into a sleep diary

Noninvasive way to track sleep

It can turn off lights automatically when you get into bed Cons: If you sleep with another person, there is a chance it could pick up their movements

You need to have an outlet nearby to plug it in

How we tested the best sleep trackers

Caroline Igo/CNET

I’ve been testing and assessing sleep products for years alongside CNET’s sleep team. From mattresses to bedding to sleep accessories, I know which products are worth writing home about. I tested each sleep tracker on this list for a minimum of two weeks to get a full picture of how it performed. In the case of some devices, such as the Whoop, Oura or Eight Sleep, some of our experts (like myself) wear and use these every day. The selected sleep trackers were also chosen based on comfort, accessibility, metrics measured, accuracy, battery life and the supporting app.

Our sleep experts have also tested the TempurPedic Tempur-Ergo Smart Base, Oxa Breathing Coach, Eight Sleep Pod 4, Apple Watch SE, Garmin Forerunner 45S and the Garmin Forerunner 965. These products didn’t make our list because of poor sleep-tracking performance or because they were beaten out by other models. In the case of Garmin, both watches mentioned have great sleep tracking capabilities but the price and extra features of the Garmin Forerunner 165 topped the other two models. The same can be said for the newest Eight Sleep Pod 4 — the older Pod 3 version has similar features for a better price.

What to consider when shopping for a sleep tracker

The sleep tracker market has a lot of variety to choose from — which can be overwhelming if you aren’t sure where to start. Before you begin shopping for a sleep tracker, keep these features in mind.

Type

Before shopping, you should decide what type of sleep tracker is most appealing. There are lots of sleep tracker watches, but some may find them too uncomfortable to sleep with. There are also smart rings, smart mattress covers and mats that go under your bed.

Additional features

Determining what you expect from your sleep tracker will help you narrow down your options; maybe you want a device with a screen that alerts you of your texts or you want one that fits into your wardrobe. If you want a sleep tracker that also tracks your fitness and activity, choose something like the Oura Ring 3 or Fitbit Inspire. If you are a runner who needs GPS to track your miles, then the Garmin Forerunner 165 is a great option.

If you are interested in a device that tracks other health vitals and metrics in addition to its sleep-tracking features, look for a wearable that measures blood oxygen levels, heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, temperature and other valuable health data.

Accuracy

Another crucial factor when choosing a sleep tracker is its accuracy. No current device on the market is as accurate as an in-office sleep study with a doctor (a test that measures brain activity and wave patterns). Trackers with heart rate and blood-oxygen level sensors are the most reliable.

Price

The price range for sleep tracker devices varies so determining your budget first will help you narrow down your best options. It’s also important to factor in the monthly or yearly subscriptions that some sleep tracker devices require. Oura has the lowest at $6 per month but Withings and Fitbit do not require subscriptions. Eight Sleep is already extremely pricey and requires a $17 or $25 subscription per month, depending on your membership.

Battery life

Battery life and charging are other factors you should consider. A sleep-tracking product that requires being charged daily or nightly can be unmanageable or unrealistic for some people. If you need a sleep tracker with a long battery life, the Withings Scan Watch 2 can go for about 30 days between charges. If you’re looking at a sleep tracker that requires an outlet, such as the Withings Sleep Tracking Mat or the Eight Sleep Pod 3 Cover, that’s something to consider if you don’t have one easily accessible near your bed.

I Tried The Lumen Metabolism Tracker For 6 Months: My Review

Lumen is a handheld device that helps to identify where you sit on the metabolic spectrum. The levels of CO2 in your body indicate the type of fuel your body is using to produce energy. It took three engineers and over five years of work to perfect the device, with one 2020 study confirming it as the gold standard for measuring metabolism. Personal trainer Don Saladino—who works with the likes of Blake Lively and Anne Hathaway—swears by the device for improving clients’ metabolic flexibility and energy levels. Lumen is all about working out a nutrition plan—completely tailored to your body—and aims to be the anthesis of the restrictive diets we’ve seen over the years. There are over 65,000 measurements and over 1 million measurements in the Lumen database, which is close to the gap between men and women’s metabolism. It takes a technician 45 minutes and a trained technician to get these kind of results from a single breath. It’s also a firm A-lister favourite.

Whether you’re just starting to get into your fitness journey or you indulge in half-marathons for breakfast, arming yourself with one of the best fitness trackers can be a helpful tool to aid your training and help you reach your health goals for the year ahead.

With a slew of new technology on the market, measuring your resting heart rate, tracking your readiness score (make sure you check out the Oura ring) or carrying your personal step tracker in your pocket has never been easier. Hacking your metabolism has always been a long-debated topic in the fitness world, and now, thanks to the Lumen, you’re able to do so on the go.

I’d been seeing Lumen all over my social media for a while, which first piqued my interest in trying it out for myself. There has been a 50% increase in searches for the Lumen Metabolism Tracker over the last year, so the hype clearly isn’t dying down any time soon.

To read how I got on putting the Lumen to the test over six months, keep scrolling. Below, I cover everything there is to know about its latest technology and most importantly, if it actually worked.

My honest Lumen review? It’s been a game changer

So, what exactly is Lumen?

Put simply: Lumen is a handheld device that helps to identify where you sit on the metabolic spectrum.

Lumen was developed by two sister doctors, Drs. Michal and Merav Mor who were training for an Ironman Triathlon. They wanted to understand how to fuel for their competitions, what to eat and also what to avoid. They had the idea to create a handheld version of the RER (Respiratory Exchange Ratio) equipment that you find in hospitals and clinics, which lets you know your metabolism by measuring the amount of CO2 in your breath.

“It has always been our goal to contribute more knowledge on metabolism to the scientific community and make personalized nutrition more accessible so that we can finally understand the question of what we should be eating on a daily basis which actually works for our unique body”, shares Dr. Merav Mor , Chief of Science at Lumen.

It took three engineers and over five years of work to perfect the device, with one 2020 study confirming it as the gold standard for measuring metabolism. Lumen is all about working out a nutrition plan—completely tailored to your body—and aims to be the anthesis of the restrictive diets we’ve seen over the years.

If that isn’t enough to convince you, you might be interested to know that it’s also a firm A-lister favourite. Personal trainer Don Saladino—who works with the likes of Blake Lively and Anne Hathaway—swears by the device for improving clients’ metabolic flexibility and energy levels.

Lumen Metabolism Tracker £199 at Lumen Specifications Dimensions: 4.02 x 1.63 x 1.31 inches Weight: 95 grams Materials: Stainless steel mouthpiece and cover Battery: Lithium Polymer battery with up to two weeks (depending on daily usage)

How does Lumen work?

Lumen’s main goal is to understand and improve your metabolic flexibility (the body’s ability to switch between burning fat or carbohydrates for energy) and, in turn, help you work out which foods to eat to boost your energy and mood.

It’s no surprise that sleep and diet can have a direct effect on our metabolism (the brand recently published a peer-reviewed study with ARU Cambridge on the effects of high and low-carb diets and metabolism) and Lumen can help to identify how other lifestyle factors may contribute to metabolic flexibility.

So, how does it work? By monitoring your body’s carbon dioxide concentration—all you have to do is breathe into the handheld device. The levels of CO2 in your body indicate the type of fuel your body is using to produce energy.

Lumen says they “developed the CO2 sensor inside the device from scratch, and that’s the key hardware that reads the levels of CO2 in your breath. If you have elevated CO2 levels in the breath, your body is burning carbs and lower CO2 levels means your body is burning fats.”

Lumen took a technology that had already been used since the 60’s in top clinics and made it work from a single breath. It would normally takes 45 minutes and a trained technician to get these kind of results, which is not at all accessible for most people. That’s where the Lumen device comes in.

The company now boasts the largest metabolic database in the world. Before Lumen, there were less than 1 million measurements. Now, there are over 65 million measurements and over 300,000 users. At the moment, the founders’ main focus area is how women’s metabolism is different to men’s to help close the research gap and arm women with tools to track their own data and metabolism.

Top tips for using Lumen

Before I got started with the device, I set up a call with Mia Johanna Dige, metabolic coach at Lumen, to ask for advice for starting my journey. If you’re starting with Lumen too, then make sure you read the below:

Get the most out of Lumen : “To get the device working at its optimum, you need to do a measurement in the morning before you’ve eaten anything and have the option to do several other measurements across the day (before and after exercising and before bedtime)”.

: “To get the device working at its optimum, you need to do a measurement in the morning before you’ve eaten anything and have the option to do several other measurements across the day (before and after exercising and before bedtime)”. Protein , protein, protein: “Protein not only keeps you feeling fuller for longer but it helps with muscle growth and recovery,” says Dige, And, that we should be aiming for “at least 30% of each meal to be compromised of protein”.

“Protein not only keeps you feeling fuller for longer but it helps with muscle growth and recovery,” says Dige, And, that we should be aiming for “at least 30% of each meal to be compromised of protein”. Knowing when to consume carbs: “Try to eat carbohydrates in the middle of the day and opt for more veg and protein in the evenings”. “Use your measurements to work out what types of carbs you eat as everybody responds differently to specific types of carbs”

“Try to eat carbohydrates in the middle of the day and opt for more veg and protein in the evenings”. “Use your measurements to work out what types of carbs you eat as everybody responds differently to specific types of carbs” Lumen and Intermittent fasting: For those doing intermittent fasting, Dige recommends, “doing a reading every hour to see where you are and if you’re maintaining fat burn. This enables you to find the perfect window of fasting for your body.”

Lumen Metabolism review: so, how did I get on with it?

I’d first seen the device over my Instagram feed and after what I initially thought sounded good to be true, I decided to look into it and give it a go.

It’s worth stating that I’m a complete novice when it comes to macros—and let’s face it, exercise in general. I had a fairly sporty childhood but rather embarrassingly, after the age of 18, I stopped doing any form of exercise apart from countless hours spent raving on the dancefloors around Europe (does that count?).

I’m giving you this information because I want you to know the complete picture. Fast forward to today, and I’m on a journey of looking after and wanting to better understand my body. That’s where Lumen—and my recent love of biohacking—comes in.

I’ve been using the Lumen device for around six months now. Full disclaimer: I really struggled to get into the habit of using it at the very beginning, but now, it’s become a part of me and completely slipped into my lifestyle and routine. Word to the wise: the chances of you becoming that guy that shares their newfound love and understanding of how their metabolism works, are quite high. At a recent dinner party (more on those later), I met a fellow Lumeneer—I’m coining that—and we extolled the virtues of said device to anyone that would listen.

Whatever your reasons may be; understanding how your body works so that you can choose the right training activities or foods that work for you, looking for something to provide insights to inform your training programmes, or if you simply want to use it for weight loss, there is no question about it, the Lumen is an extremely handy bit of kit.

I quickly worked out just how much the device points to sleep and, of course, diet. There wasn’t anything that I wasn’t allowed to eat. Instead, the daily-tailored nutritional plan focused on macros: carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Once I got into the swing of it, the morning reading—done just before my hot water with lemon—no longer seemed like a chore. I will admit though, that during particularly busy periods I sometimes skipped a day or just didn’t have the time. For example, travelling around cities for various fashion weeks often means I am sleep deprived, time-poor and make terrible decisions when it comes to what I’m consuming. It’s also worth noting that I would eat whatever I wanted when I was out for dinner for either work or with friends and family.

For me, maintaining a level of distance from the incessant recording of data was key. I didn’t want to become obsessed with it. When I missed a day or two (or a week, in some cases) then I simply made peace with it knowing that I would return to regular programming when I was ready.

Does Lumen help with fat loss?

Now to the question you’re all thinking – can this device actually help me lose weight? The answer – well, it’s a journey, but what you put in will most likely be presented in the results.

There are no quick fixes. My weight fluctuated by 5kg across the six-month period of use. I will be the first to admit that I didn’t always completely stick to the plan and instead used it as rough guidance, so I know that this could’ve been better if I did.

However, several people that I bumped into made comments about my appearance—as an aside, maybe we need to look at the culture around that—and to be honest, I felt like I had shifted some of the weight. So, for me, it most definitely worked.

I was making better choices when it came to food and being more active by making small changes: instead of getting the tube, I decided to walk. I was averaging over 12,000 steps a day.

How much does it all cost?

So far so good. Now, let’s talk about the cost. The Lumen is available as a subscription service. You can typically get the device and one month’s free membership for £299. Memberships renew at £19/month, but you can cancel anytime and keep using your Lumen device.

Right now, however, you can score the Lumen device for just £199. That’s an impressive 33% saving, making it a much more affordable investment.

Obviously, this is not cheap. However, it is cheaper than a gym membership but more expensive than your Netflix subscription. I’ve seriously had to question whether it was something that I would like to continue doing as the cost is significant. But when looking at the entire package and everything that is included, I think it’s a great investment.

The monthly subscription includes:

Macro tracking, meal ideas and tailored nutrition plans updated daily: It can be a challenge working out what to eat initially, so I found this extremely helpful.

What the experts say about the Lumen metabolism tracker

“Lumen provides the necessary biofeedback to make necessary health and nutrition changes”, Dr. John Whyte , chief medical officer at Web MD.

“Based on this device, I get personalized recommendations for nutrition, sleep, physical activity, to help me improve my metabolism.” Dr. William Li , author of Eat to Beat your Diet.

The verdict on the Lumen—Could I do all of this without the device?

You can measure your macros intake, track and record your workouts, and track your sleep via some other well-known trackers and apps but, to my knowledge, there is no other device currently on the market that enables you to track your metabolism.

Whilst some attempts to eat better or switch up your diet are often fads and short-lived, IMHO, Lumen provides the bases for a long-lasting approach to not only eating better but also understanding your body, Taking that into account, I do think that overall I will continue my subscription—even though it is quite pricey. It’s helped me on my journey.

The Lumen founders are also focused on empowering women with scientifically backed data related to how to eat and sleep—an area in which research is lacking. Lumen stats have shown that women experience a 17% increase in carb burn during the first half of the menstrual cycle and increased fat burn in the second half, which is why women tend to crave carbs much more during the first half of a period.

These are things that would be very difficult to keep track of—or even have knowledge of—accessibly without devices like Lumen. If stats like these about your own body particularly interest you, you will probably benefit from using Lumen too.

Recent updates

Who should avoid using the Lumen device? The Lumen might not be accurate for some people. According to their website, Lumen advises that readings might not be accurate and so therefore is unsuitable for anyone with: Diabetes, Severe Asthma, COPD or for anyone that is pregnant. Plus, they go on to suggest that the nutrional recommendations may not be suitable for anyone with Cancer, Thyroid Disease or Cancer.

What does the device include? Apart from the initial purchase and various plans, what else does the Lumen come with? The device comes equipped with a travel case, charging dock, USB-C Cable, and Premium Customer Support. Users can download the app for free on the Apple App Store and on Google Play.

For a more in-depth look at how to boost metabolism naturally, we reached out to Jo WoodHurst, Head of Nutrition at Ancient + Brave – find her expert-approved tips below…

Can monitoring my metabolism aid with fat loss? According to Woodhurst, “much like any other aspects of wellness, there’s no one magic pill or button to ‘boost’ your metabolism but there are some healthy habits which will help to optimise your metabolic rate.” She names staying hydrated as one of the most underrated aspects of boosting your metabolism: “many metabolic reactions and processes rely on optimal hydration with water. Getting enough water is key, but proper hydration also needs electrolytes, minerals which you can obtain through diet or using high quality electrolyte formulas.” A nourishing diet is also key, according to WoodHurst, “ensuring you are prioritising good quality protein intake (which also often contain other micronutrients important for your metabolism), complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. Eating plenty of plants ensures you are also getting fibre and phytonutrients, both important for your gut microbiome which is known to impact weight management. Balancing your plates like this ensures you satiated after meals and reduces the need for snacking.” Moving your body is also important for optimal metabolism. “Workouts are of course great”, states WoodHurst, “but alongside this also trying to inconvenience yourself throughout the day with NEAT activity (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) which can increase your metabolic rate. Think; taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking a few blocks away from work and walking 10 mins to the office, getting up out of your chair regularly or using a standing desk.” “Fasting has also been shown to support metabolism for fat loss” says Woodhurst, “but it’s important to find the right fasting protocol for you (especially if you’re a woman as it can affect hormones).”

Which types of food and drink help to boost metabolism? Protein is the most important food group when it comes to boosting metabolism, according to WoodHurst: “because this macronutrient takes a lot of effort for the body to break down, it requires energy to do so. Prioritising protein also helps to balance blood sugars which in turn has an impact on our metabolic health.” “Lots of other protein sources from whole foods also contain B vitamins which are important for energy production,” WoodHurst continues, “plant proteins such as legumes also contain fibre which make a great combination for metabolism.” It’s also worth swapping out coffee for a green tea or matcha, as “the compounds such as EGCG and caffeine naturally found in matcha have been shown to have a positive effect on metabolism.”

Our Editors’ favourite fitness trackers

Oura Ring Gen 3 Shop at Oura The social media sensation that is the Oura Ring makes a great option if you’re not a fan of wearing fitness trackers on your wrist. Sunil actually found it suited his personal jewellery style quite nicely. It’s water-resistant up to 100 meters, pretty accurate and surprisingly chic. What we thought when testing? “It’s the perfect way to keep track of your health without it being massively intrusive. I particularly enjoyed the sleep scoring and “Readiness” factor (a score that shows you how you might be able to handle the day ahead) and concise weekly reporting. There’s also the option to explore breathwork and guided meditations via the app on your phone. I have a smartwatch (the Apple Watch SE) that measures my heart activity and sleep too, so it was interesting to see whether the data would match up. I compared the data from my watch (via the Welltory app synched to my phone) and the Oura ring, and for the most part, they gave very similar readings.” – Sunil Makan, Editor Fitbit Versa 4 £149 at Amazon Fitbit’s Versa 4 is popular for a reason – if you’re after a stylish and accurate fitness tracker for tracking your steps and the occasional workout class, you can’t go wrong with this model. What we thought when testing: “The Fitbit Versa 4 has been dubbed the most advanced smartwatch from the brand, so as a Health Editor, I was eager to test it out. I trialled my first Fitbit back in 2015 and trained for my first-ever marathon using one. While they’re certainly great at pulling health stats, they weren’t so great on accurate stats and battery life back in the day – which is why I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Versa 4’s stats were similar enough to my much-loved Garmin Forerunner, and the battery life lasted around four to five days. It looks great, accurately records your health stats, and lasts nearly a week. I’d buy if you exercise a few times a week and love tracking your workout classes and steps.” – Ally Head, Senior Health Editor WHOOP 4.0 Shop at WHOOP After a screenless fitness tracker? Introducing: WHOOP. The accurate stats are sent to the program’s app on your phone rather than popping up on a screen, if you prefer to have the option of checking in on your progress rather than having a constant reminder of it. It also tracks not just your training, but your sleep and recovery too. If you’re a bit anxious about exercising or want more an all-round progress report, this is a great tracker. The chic bracelet straps are also interchangeable (and there are loads to choose from), making this just about the more versatile fitness tracker we’ve seen. What we thought when testing: “WHOOP have long been hailed as the fitness tracker of all fitness trackers, with celebrities and athletes alike swearing by their stats (we’re looking at you, Tom Daley). But it’s slightly different to other competitors. How? Well, it continuously collects data about everything from your recovery, to training, to sleep, to stress, versus other wearables that collect data during workouts and shut-eye. You have to wear it for a few weeks before it starts feeding back your data, but I’ve never had more insight into my overall fitness levels, recovery score, and so on, and it was very accurate when cross-referenced with my Garmin.”

The best fitness trackers have a very simple purpose of keeping you pacing towards your health goals. Depending on the person, those objectives can range from improving your sleep regimen, getting your daily steps in, or hitting peak Schwarzenegger-level physique. The latest class of fitness trackers have advanced way beyond your grandma’s OG Walk-A-Matic. Sure, these wearables will count your steps, but now they’ll also give you a pretty good estimate of how many calories you burned, the amount of flights you’ve scaled, and even your walking asymmetry (a pretty neat stat that tells you how your legs differ during your walks). All of this data comes together inside these fairly tiny devices to let you know just how well you’re doing health-wise. They’ll even help you make better, smarter life choices to live longer, better lives.

The crowded wearables marketplace can make it really tough to figure which are truly the best fitness trackers, though, especially since each new model seems to pack in more features than the last (do you really need to know you blood oxygen saturation levels?). But we’ve used our intel on the market, findings from our own testing and previous reporting, plus winners from GQ Fitness Awards of the past to pad out these recommendations. Sound good to you? Here are the best fitness trackers to get you back on, ahem, track.

The Best Fitness Trackers, at a Glance

The Best Fitness Tracker Overall: Garmin Forerunner 245

Battery life: 7 days; 24 hours with GPS

Heart rate monitor: Yes

GPS: Yes

Size: 42mm

At $300, Garmin’s Forerunner 245 sits nicely between the low-budget fitness trackers and the wildly expensive super computers that are sized like a watch. The 245 is a lightweight, workout-ready fitness tracker for basically everyone. It boasts an impressive battery life—up to seven days—and even with the GPS running, it’ll go on for up to 24 hours. On the daily, you can get exercise programs tailored to you, and if you have a real-life coach, they can even sync their custom workouts to your device so it’s like your trainer is with you IRL.

Runners we’ve interviewed in the past love the Forerunner 245 for its lightweight feel. And anyone who’s training for a marathon or race can appreciate the 245’s training status monitor, which ensures you’re not overdoing it on activities, and the recovery time advisor that cautions you to ease up before tackling another big sweat session. For those who prefer to run without their phone on hand, the GPS will let you stay on the radar without the added baggage of a device.

The Best Budget Fitness Tracker: Fitbit Charge 5

Battery life: 7 days; 5 hours with GPS

Heart rate monitor: Yes

GPS: Yes

Size: 26mm

Fitbit is arguably the most recognizable name in the fitness tracker game, and its Charge 5 is lightyears better than its previous iteration. First, it has a crisper, cleaner display, alongside a more streamlined design that sits subtly on the wrist. It’s not as beefy or jam-packed as our top pick, the Forerunner 245, but it does feature a surprisingly robust fitness tracking library for such a compact device. A lot of the greatest gimmicks are locked behind a membership ($10 per month) which is free for the first six months with your purchase, like a daily readiness reading—which tracks your sleep, heart rate, and previous workouts to determine your preparedness for a workout today—and a stress management setting to help you better manage that tension you feel coursing through your body.

The Best Splurge-y Fitness Tracker: Garmin Epix 2

Battery life: 16 days; 42 hours with GPS

Heart rate monitor: Yes

GPS: Yes

Size: 47mm

As we noted before in last year’s Fitness Awards, the Epix 2 is the “Cadillac Eldorado of dedicated sports watches.” This luxury wearable offers a wealth of tracking capabilities—like stress, sleep, hydration, and respiration—as well as sport modes for specific activities like hiking and even pickleball. Big golf guy? The Epix 2 loads CourseView maps for over 42,000 golf courses to help you get on par. It also provides some of the most accurate GPS positioning among any other wearable, making for a perfect companion on trail runs even in the middle of nowhere. The sun’s glare is no match for the stunning screen, and the always-on display is crystal clear, especially with this extra-large, 47-millimeter display.

The Best Fitness Tracker for Elite Athletes: Apple Watch Ultra

Battery life: 36 hours; or 60 hours with low power mode

Heart rate monitor: Yes

GPS: Yes

Size: 49mm

Apple’s been in the wearables game for a minute now, but last year’s Watch Ultra launch was the biggest release for the category in a hot minute. As Alan Dye—vice president of human interface design—previously told us, the Apple Watch Ultra is “purpose-built for adventure.” The redesigned dual-frequency GPS offers some super-precise positioning, while a Backtrack feature helps you retrace your steps even in the most remote locations (and in case you forgot to alert your loved ones where you were headed).

The biggest addition to the Apple Watch Ultra is the action button, placed under the crown, which you customize to control the feature you use the most from the watch. And for those less-than-ideal SOS situations, the action button can be used to activate an emergency siren that’s loud enough to be heard from as far as 600 feet. It doesn’t have the most long-lasting battery, but it is an improvement on non-Ultra watches and lasts long enough to endure a grueling Ironman.

The Best Fitness Tracker for Sleep: Oura Ring 3

Battery life: 7 days

Heart rate monitor: Yes

GPS: No

Size: 8mm

A wearable you don’t wear on your wrist?! The Oura ring, on its third generation, brings back all of the health tracking we loved before—activity (and inactivity levels), sleep habits, and recovery time—with the addition of a “readiness score,” which is sort of like the Fitbit Charge 5 in that it alerts you of your overall body status each morning. The longer you wear the Oura ring, the better it’ll get at telling you how to get the most out of your sleep, from when you should start winding down—i.e. wrap up your social media doom-scrolling—and alert you to any sleep disturbances from breathing you might have experienced. Also, the Oura ring just looks so damn good. Its sleek design (whose fashion bona fides have been paved by a collaboration with Gucci) is a far cry from the highly rugged wearables we’ve come to know and love, but it still does a damn good job on the tech side.

The Best Fitness Tracker for Apple Users: Apple Watch SE

Battery life: 18 hours

Heart rate monitor: Yes

GPS: Yes

Size: 40mm and 44mm

Ever since Apple released “SE” versions of its flagship products, we’ve been loving these more affordable options for those who want the basics but maybe not all the bells and whistles. It has the usual tracking features for stuff like heart rate and noise levels, and for those who just want to make sure they’re not a couch potato all day long, the idea of creating “rings” of exercise you complete make it somewhat of a game to stand up, stretch, and flail around to get those bursts of movement in.

A short brief introduction to Herz P1 smart ring

For years, major tech companies have charged steep prices for new gadgets — often with only minor upgrades. Consumers have grown tired of paying more for features that feel barely different. That’s why a rising tech startup, Herz Health, is gaining attention for disrupting the $5 billion smart health industry.

With the release of its latest innovation — the Herz Health Ring, the company is offering a feature-rich wearable at a price point that’s far more accessible. Tech enthusiasts and early adopters alike are calling it one of the standout gadgets of 2025, thanks to its advanced capabilities and affordability.

Introducing the Herz Health Ring — the result of a collaboration between seasoned health tech engineers and skilled ring designers. Their goal was straightforward: to create a sleek, comfortable ring that combines the functionality of a sleep monitor, fitness tracker, and best health device in one elegant piece.

Designed for everyday wear, the ring feels light and natural on your finger. It’s far more comfortable than many of the bulkier metal smart rings out there. Whether you’re running, swimming, or accidentally knocking it against a surface, its durable titanium shell and scratch-resistant coating hold up under pressure.

But what really sets the Best Smart Health Ring apart isn’t just the step tracking or sleep data — it’s the advanced health monitoring features. Some of these could make a real difference in critical situations. That’s more than convenience; it’s peace of mind. And that raises the question — how do you put a price on something that could one day protect your health?

Understanding the working mechanism

The Herz P1 Smart Ring is built with advanced sensor technology designed to keep track of key health indicators. Equipped with both optical sensors and motion-detecting accelerometers, the ring continuously collects real-time data from the finger to deliver insights into your heart rate, oxygen saturation, and body temperature.

A key feature of this device is its use of light-based sensors to monitor cardiovascular activity. This method, known as photoplethysmography (PPG), involves shining a green light onto the skin and analyzing how the light is absorbed or reflected by the blood as it flows through the vessels. Because the amount of light changes with each pulse, the ring can determine your heart rate and measure heart rate variability (HRV) — offering a window into your heart health with impressive accuracy.

The Herz P1 smart ring doesn’t just help track the number of steps you have done on a particular day or your heart rate. It works much deeper than this. While other smart gadgets provide you with basic statistics, the HerzP1 smart ring helps in tracking your HRV, that is heart rate variability, blood, oxygen levels, and sleep patterns, the entire 24 hours of the day.

Beyond monitoring heart health, the ring also features built-in motion sensors that track your physical activity throughout the day. Using accelerometers, it can recognize various types of movement — whether you’re running, walking, resting, or sleeping. This information builds a unique picture of your daily activity, helping you better understand how your routines influence overall well-being.

Sleep tracking is another key highlight. When worn overnight, the HerzP1 monitors different stages of sleep, including deep, light, and REM. Because the ring maintains constant skin contact, it captures detailed data that reflects how well your body recovers during sleep. The insights it provides can be a game-changer for anyone trying to boost energy, best sleep quality, or manage stress better during the day.

How a new wearable sensor can track your health — without even touching your skin

Researchers at Northwestern University have developed the world’s first contactless wearable device. It measures gases naturally emitted and absorbed by the skin without ever touching it. The data it gathers can provide insights into everything from wound healing and hydration levels to early signs of infection and even exposure to toxic chemicals. The device could be used to enhance the effectiveness of bug repellents, skin care products and medications designed to improve skin health, the researchers say. The gadget is tiny — just two centimeters long and one-and-a-half wide — and loaded with sensors that pull in gas samples through a mini air chamber that hovers just above the skinWithout touching it, the device syncs with your smartphone or tablet to provide real-time data on the gases your skin is emitting and absorbing. It could help dermatologists quickly lotions and creams penetrate the skin, while assisting researchers in evaluating safety of cosmetics and personal care products. The technology could be especially helpful for the treatment of wounds that can be difficult to heal.

Your skin isn’t just glowing — it’s gassy. And now, science is sniffing it out.

Researchers at Northwestern University have developed the world’s first contactless wearable device that can monitor your health by measuring gases naturally emitted and absorbed by the skin without ever touching it.

“This technology has the potential to transform clinical care, particularly for vulnerable populations, including newborn babies, the elderly, patients with diabetes, and others with compromised skin,” said Dr. Guillermo A. Ameer, a professor of biomedical engineering who co-led the study.

Secret signals

Your skin isn’t just a barrier; it’s a two-way street between your body and the outside world.

Every day, gases like carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) move in and out through the skin, which also protects you from irritants, toxins and allergens in the environment.

The device developed by Northwestern researchers can monitor all that activity without even laying a finger on you, opening up a new window into skin health.

Small but mighty

The gadget is tiny — just two centimeters long and one-and-a-half wide — and loaded with sensors that pull in gas samples through a mini air chamber that hovers just above the skin without making contact.

That’s a game-changer, since most wearable devices need to stick directly to the skin, which can be a challenge for people with fragile or damaged tissue.

The data it gathers can provide insights into everything from wound healing and hydration levels to early signs of infection and even exposure to toxic chemicals.

“For workers in potentially hazardous environments, it’s helpful to know how much of those hazardous species are entering the body through the skin,” said Dr. John Rogers, a professor and researcher at Northwestern who co-led the study.

Real-time monitoring at your fingertips

One of the biggest perks of the compact wearable is that it would allow patients to manage their skin health at home, eliminating the need for bulky, traditional hospital equipment.

Even better, it syncs with your smartphone or tablet to provide real-time data on the gases your skin is emitting and absorbing.

Researchers said this fast, accessible information can help healthcare providers make quicker, more informed treatment decisions, which is especially crucial for wound healing.

“Prescribing antibiotics for wounds can be a bit of a gamble,” said Ameer. “Sometimes it’s hard to tell if a wound is infected or not. By the time it’s obvious, it might be too late, and the patient can develop sepsis, which is incredibly dangerous.”

Increased water vapor, CO2, and VOCs are linked to bacterial growth and slower healing, so researchers said monitoring these factors could help caregivers detect infections earlier and more accurately, enabling faster intervention and better health outcomes.

“Being able to closely, continuously monitor a wound and prescribe an antibiotic at the earliest sign of infection is an obvious and important interest,” Ameer said.

Next steps

The Northwestern team envisions the device being used to enhance the effectiveness of bug repellents, skin care products and medications designed to improve skin health.

For example, CO2 and VOCs attract mosquitoes and other pests. By measuring these emissions from the skin, it could help scientists develop better strategies to keep them away.

The device could also help dermatologists measure how quickly lotions and creams penetrate the skin, while assisting researchers in evaluating the safety of cosmetics and personal care products.

Looking ahead, researchers want to refine the device’s capabilities, including adding a sensor to monitor changes in pH levels and creating gas sensors with more chemical selectivity for early detection of organ dysfunction and other diseases.

“This technology is not just about measuring gases and corresponding characteristics of the skin,” Rogers said.

“It’s about predicting overall health, preventing infection and disease, and creating a future where personalized care is driven by real-time, non-invasive continuous health tracking,” he continued.
