Sheraton Grand’s First Team Member Celebrates 40 Years
Wayne Hutchison was one of the first employees when the Sheraton Grand opened in 1985. Four decades on, he remains a much-loved and respected member of the team. His journey was inspired by his father, who worked in the hotel’s housekeeping department. To celebrate this remarkable milestone, Wayne was honoured with a special presentation at the hotel, where colleagues gathered to share memories and toast his contribution. He said: “When I started back in 1985, I never imagined I’d still be here 40 years later.”
Long-Serving Team Member Hailed As ‘One Of A Kind’
A LONG-SERVING team member at Edinburgh’s Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa is celebrating a double milestone, marking 40 years of service in the very same year the hotel itself turns 40.
Many know Wayne Hutchison as the welcoming doorman in a kilt but may be unaware that he was one of the first employees through the doors when the Sheraton Grand opened in 1985 on Lothian Road.
Four decades on, he remains a much-loved and respected member of the team, known for his warmth, professionalism, and unwavering dedication.
Wayne’s journey was inspired by his father, who worked in the hotel’s housekeeping department. Following in those footsteps, Wayne became one of the Sheraton Grand’s founding team members, a living link between the hotel’s first day, culminating in its 40th anniversary celebration this year.
Wayne said: “When I started back in 1985, I never imagined I’d still be here 40 years later. The hotel has changed and grown over the years, but the sense of pride in what we do has stayed the same. I’ve worked with so many amazing people, and I’m proud to have played a small part in its story.”
To celebrate this remarkable milestone, Wayne was honoured with a special presentation at the hotel, where colleagues gathered to share memories and toast his contribution.
Martijn Zengerink, General Manager of the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa said:
“Wayne is one of a kind. As one of our very first employees, he’s witnessed every chapter of our hotel’s evolution and helped write many of them.
“His loyalty, warmth and professionalism have had a lasting impact on everyone who has had the pleasure to work with him. His 40 years of service is a remarkable achievement and one that deserves real recognition.”
The milestone comes as the Sheraton Grand marks its own 40th anniversary in 2025, with both Wayne and the hotel sharing a legacy of excellence, experience and award-winning service.
Wayne continues to be a much-valued part of the Sheraton Grand family, the doorman in the kilt who represents the very best of Scottish hospitality and a shining example of the people who make five-star service possible.
Alain Roux and Heston Blumenthal anniversary celebration raises over £70,000 for charity
The event at the Waterside Inn was held to celebrate 40 years of three Michelin stars at the iconic restaurant. Some 50% of ticket sales, amounting to over £60,000, were donated the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust, of which Roux is patron, and Bipolar UK. Guests were treated to a menu that included Fat Duck classics such as mock turtle soup with a Victorian toasted sandwich, and ‘Like a kid in a sweet shop’ The event was the first time Heston has collaborated with a fellow chef, so it was a truly unforgettable occasion.
The event at the Waterside Inn was held to celebrate 40 years of three Michelin stars at the iconic restaurant (1985-2025) along with 30 years since the Fat Duck first opened and 21 years since it was recognised with three Michelin stars (2004-2025).
Tickets for the event were prices at £1,985 to signify the year that the Waterside Inn first achieved three-Michelin-star status. Some 50% of ticket sales, amounting to over £60,000, were donated the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust, of which Roux is patron, and Bipolar UK, a charity for which Blumenthal is an ambassador and a subject that he will explore in a new documentary.
Guests were treated to a menu that included Fat Duck classics such as mock turtle soup with a Victorian toasted sandwich, and ‘Like a kid in a sweet shop’. Waterside Inn dishes including pan-fried lobster medallion with ginger-flavoured vegetable julienne and white port sauce, and duo of roasted Pyrenean milk lamb, baby vegetables and morel mushrooms with minted hollandaise sauce.
Roux also invited pastry chef Jeff Oberweis, who holds the Royal Warrant to the Luxembourg royal family, to create a signature dessert to complete the dinner. He served dark Sáo Tomé chocolate dessert with bergamot-scented pear and Koa sorbet.
Alain Roux said: “It was a privilege and so much fun to share this special evening with my dear friend and neighbour, Heston and his team. It’s the first time Heston has collaborated with a fellow chef, so it was a truly unforgettable occasion. You could feel the love in the room for this ground-breaking chef, who defines courage and inspires us all.”
Blumenthal added: “The Waterside Inn is of course a landmark in British cuisine, having retained three Michelin stars longer than any restaurant outside France, which is a tribute to the skill and precision of Michel and now Alain – two incredible chefs.
“Working alongside Alain and his team for this extraordinary event has been full-on and such fun that I’m asking myself why it took us so long to get around to it.
“This is what cuisine is all about – teamwork, creativity, rising to the challenge and making something beautiful and delicious. The fact that we could do all this and raise money for two vital charities is the icing on the cake.”

John Torode and Gregg Wallace address plans to quit MasterChef after 17 years
John Torode and Gregg Wallace are back for Masterchef’s 20th series. But could it be their last? John and Gregg recently spoke about potentially bowing out of the long-running program. They’ve already ruled out the possibility, saying: ‘Who would we leave it to? Don’t be ridiculous’ The celebrity chef then admitted there would only be one way for him to leave MasterChef – and it could be a while before he bows out. The culinary program returned on April 1, 2024, and twists and turns are to be expected, along with a trip aboard for the finalists. The final three contestants fighting for the winning title and trophy will have to cook one last three-course menu for the judges. They will be joined by a string of guest judges during the eight weeks of competition.
The iconic judging duo have contributed to the cooking program’s success but after two decades on our screens, could John and Gregg consider a well-earned break?

John Torode and Gregg Wallace are back in the MasterChef kitchen as they try to find the next best amateur cook for a 20th series – but could it be their last?
Shooting to fame for their judging talents and culinary expertise, John and Gregg recently spoke about potentially bowing out of the long-running program – and they’ve already both ruled out the possibility.
“Who would we leave it to? Don’t be ridiculous”, John, 58, scoffed. “That’s too much responsibility for anybody – to take over from me and him, there’s no way in the world. Where are you going to find two attractive people, one with hair, the other without, anywhere like that? There’s no way!”

The celebrity chef then admitted to Bella magazine there would only be one way for him to leave MasterChef – and it could be a while before he bows out: “I think to get me out of place, they’re going to have to push me out the door or blend my food to get me to taste it. That’s when I’ll be leaving.”
Prior to setting the record straight, John left his pal Gregg to talk about their strong professional bond, which may have worked in their favour in the past two decades. “We always have had an incredible level of professionalism and I think what that’s done over the years is developed a trust and confidence in each other. Even though we’re very different people, our approach to work is very similar”, Gregg revealed.

As mentioned, John and Gregg have made their way back to the MasterChef set for a twentieth series with the former sharing his disbelief: “I can hardly believe that we are into the 20th series of this unbelievably brilliant show. It’s such a point of pride and celebration. I believe food brings people together and every year we’re fortunate enough to be able to help incredibly talented, hard-working people realise their dream and indulge themselves in the joy that is MasterChef.”
While John and Gregg have accepted to reprise their judging roles, they are also set to be joined by a string of guest judges during the eight weeks of competition, and these will include former MasterChef winners as well as open fire chef Niklas Ekstedt who will be welcomed to set the semi-finalists up with a mass-catering challenge.

Another twist is due for the finalists as they will have the chance to travel out to Singapore to complete three challenges before cooking at the Chef’s Table.
Gregg and John will eventually have the last word – the final three contestants fighting for the winning title and trophy will have to cook one last three-course menu for the judges.
The 20th series of Masterchef was launched on BBC One on Monday (April 1, 2024) with a total of 58 amateur chefs competing for victory – but how will it all play out?
