The Ohio Valley Health Center, in collaboration with FARMacy WV, hosted a health and wellness fair on Thursday afternoon, offering community members fresh produce and tips for a healthy lifestyle.

The event aimed to promote healthy living and was part of a broader initiative to address diet-related diseases and food insecurity.

“FARMacy West Virginia is a produce prescription program and we are part of the larger national Food is Medicine movement in the United States,” co-founder Dr. Carol Greco said. “We target patients with type two diabetes and diet-related diseases and also patients that are food insecure.”

The program is a 15-week plan that provides participants with a one-week supply of local produce at no cost, along with education on nutrition and culinary skills.

“We provide them with 15 weeks of fresh locally grown produce as well as a basic nutrition education, culinary education that’s provided by the Ohio State University Extension Program,” Greco said.

Ann Quillen, executive director at Ohio Valley Health Center, noted the program’s growth since its inception last year.

“This is our second year. Last year we took care of about 30 patients. This year we have about 70 patients registered,” Quillen said. “So we’ve increased our numbers, which means we are really reaching our target audience with patients with diabetes and hypertension and food insecurity. Food is medicine. It’s very important and we need to make sure our patients understand that.”
