According to the Hindu Scripture, this day holds a great religious and spiritual significance among Hindus.

This is an extremely powerful day when Lord Jagannatha comes out of the sanctorum in a chariot to bless the devotees, who come and participate in the Ratha Yatra just to have a glimpse of the Lord. Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025 Live Streaming Updates: Lakhs of devotees have gathered at holy town of Puri in Odisha to take part in the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra on Friday. In the wake of mass gathering, the state government has made elaborate arrangements.

It is estimated that about one lakh people reached pilgrim town of Puri by Thursday evening, and the number increased manifold this morning. Like every year, devotees from across the country and abroad are expected to participate in the event.

Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee said “all arrangements are in place to make the mega event successful.”

Further, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu extended greetings on the auspicious occasion of chariot pulling festival. Several BJP leaders also gathered at Puri Jagannath Temple at the holy rituals began.

As a massive crowd participated in the auspicious Hindu festival on Friday, security has been heightened across the town to ensure a smooth flow of events. As many as 10,000 security personnel, including eight companies of Central Armed Police Forces, have been deployed in the pilgrim town. AI-enabled CCTV cameras have been installed for surveillance. Besides, Odisha DGP Y B Khurania has said that the National Security Guard (NSG) snipers will take positions on rooftops along Grand Road in front of the temple.

In Puri, the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath has begun on Friday. After the early morning Mangala Aarti and ritual worship, the deities were placed on their respective chariots—Lord Jagannath on the Nandighosh Rath, Goddess Subhadra on the Darpadalana, and Lord Balabhadra on the Taladhwaj Rath.

Now, the deities will be offered ritual worship and bhog (offering of food) on their chariots. At around 3 PM, Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb, the head of Puri’s royal family, will perform the traditional Chhera Pahanra ceremony—sweeping the area in front of the chariots with a golden broom—to formally begin the Rath Yatra.

Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, will travel approximately 3 km to the Gundicha Temple, which is considered their aunt’s house.

Rath Yatra celebrations across India

Meanwhile, Rath Yatra processions are also being held in Ahmedabad and other cities across India. In Ahmedabad, the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath was carried out with great devotion. Home Minister Amit Shah performed the Mangala Aarti at 4 AM. After this, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel performed the Pahind ceremony, officially starting the Rath Yatra. By around 8:30 PM, the deities are expected to return to the temple.

Around 12:10 PM, devotees took Lord Jagannath towards his chariot.

By 12:50 PM, Mahaprabhu Jagannath was placed on his chariot, Nandighosh.

The chariots of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra have reached Saraspur. Preparations are now underway to offer prasadam to the deities.

Elephant runs amok during Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad

During the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Ahmedabad on Friday morning, an elephant went out of control around 10 AM and ran for about 100 metres. This led to panic and chaos in the procession, with people seen running in different directions. The out-of-control elephant was leading the group of 17 elephants in the Yatra. It was brought under control with great difficulty. One person was injured in the incident.
