Some routes only operate seasonally. American, Delta, United and Southwest have released portions of their 2026 calendars. Two new routes are coming to the Des Moines Airport this fall. The airline schedules are dynamic, and often finalized closer to the date of service, an airport spokeswoman said. The Des Moines International Airport is home to the nation’s busiest airport, with more than 1.5 million passengers a year. The airport is also home to one of the world’s busiest airports, with about 1.6 million passengers per year.

With summer comes plenty of travel opportunities for the whole family. Whether you’re trying to escape the heat or find an even warmer spot, the Des Moines International Airport has plenty of flight options to choose from.

But, be aware, some routes only operate seasonally.

Allegiant Air, for example, operates many of its routes on a seasonal basis, timing flights to meet Iowans’ travel interests.

“It is not unusual for a route to go on seasonal hiatus,” said Hector Mejia, a spokesperson for Allegiant Air. “With summer in full swing, we know many travelers in the Des Moines area appreciate additional destinations to enjoy their vacations.”

So, if you want a chance to catch a summer-only flight out of Des Moines, here’s what to know.

What Des Moines flights will pause at the end of the summer?

Only American, Delta, United and Southwest have released portions of their 2026 calendars, said Sarah Hoodjer, communications and marketing director for the airport.

It’s important to remember airline schedules are dynamic, and often finalized closer to the date of service, Hoodjer said.

But, there are still flights expected to end soon and return next season:

Houston on Allegiant : Service pauses after August

: Service pauses after August Destin-Fort Walton Beach on Allegiant : Service pauses after August

: Service pauses after August Phoenix on Southwest: Service paused from July–September, with flights resuming in November and remaining until early 2026.

What Des Moines flights will pause in the fall?

Only one flight is expected to pause this fall, in September:

Miami on American Airlines: Service pauses in September and October and resumes in November and December.

Is the Des Moines International Airport getting new routes this fall?

Two new routes are coming to the Des Moines Airport this fall:

Los Angeles on American Airlines: This new route begins in October and will operate year-round

This new route begins in October and will operate year-round Gulf Shores on Allegiant: A new route launches in October. Travel can be booked until early February. Allegiant has not yet published its spring calendar or released an end date for the route.
