Zohran Mamdani made his first appearance back on the campaign trail Saturday since declaring victory over Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary this week.

“It is the time for New Yorkers to be able to afford their rent. It is the time for New Yorkers to be able to afford their childcare. It is the time for New Yorkers to be able to afford their groceries,” Mamdani said at an event hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network (NAN).

The presumptive Democratic mayoral candidate stood hand-in-hand with Sharpton at the event. If Mamdani is elected, he would be the first Muslim mayor of New York City, but he quoted Christian scripture to the packed crowd.

“I think about Psalm 35, which tell us weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning — and it has been night for far too long in this city. It has been night for the one in four New Yorkers in poverty,” Mamdani said.

“We have to ask ourselves: what will morning look like? And that must be a morning for every single New Yorker. It must be a morning where the worker comes first, a morning where every New Yorker does more than just struggle,” he added.

This was Mamdani’s second visit to the NAN in two weeks. He was also there last weekend, before the primary, alongside other candidates for mayor.

He’s hoping to win over more voters in the community, including some who supported Andrew Cuomo in the primary.

This map of primary results shows Mamdani — indicated by the areas in green — had broad support in Upper Manhattan, but the areas in pink went to Cuomo, including the neighborhood surrounding the National Action Network.

Nonetheless, Mamdani brought the crowd at the NAN to their feet.

Voters there said they like his policies, they just want to hear more about how he plans to get them done.

“I think he needs to explain how he’s gonna make these adjustments he’s talking about with the rent,” Bronx voter Cheryl Chapman said.

Mamdani has previously said his appointments to the Rent Guidelines Board — which sets any increases on rent-stablized buildings — would be ones in favor of a rent freeze.

“These communities have spent decades putting their time, resources and support behind candidates, and I think it’s time for candidates to come forward with an agenda that’s kinda comprehensive and that’s gonna really address some of the issues in these communities,” Melvin Pina said.
