A Pitkin County program that aims to pair mental health professionals with law enforcement officers for calls that could benefit from behavioral health expert participation has released its 2024 report.
The program, the Pitkin Area Co-Responder Teams, works to “decriminalize behavioral health challenges and improve access to resources for individuals struggling with mental health or substance abuse,” according to a press release.
In 2024, PACT served 291 individuals across 2,263 interactions, including follow-ups.
“PACT is a vital resource for our community and our deputies,” Pitkin County Sheriff Michael Buglione said in the press release. “PACT’s co-responder team, their peer support team, and case managers are integral components in assisting and being side by side with our deputies when dealing with those in need.”
Sixty-six percent of those served reported substance abuse issues. The co-responder team was able to provide support by offering harm-reduction services, distributing fentanyl test strips and naloxone, and providing interventions aimed at reducing substance use alongside health education.
The PACT team works with multiple law enforcement agencies in the county aside from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Department, including Snowmass Village and the Aspen police departments.
“This partnership is crucial for advancing our mental health mission and provides quicker access to wraparound services and immediate crisis assistance,” Linda Consuegra, assistant chief of the Aspen Police Department, said in the press release. “Together, these collaborations significantly impact the community.”
