Heartbroken Mavs fans react to news of Doncic trade
Luka Doncic has earned all All-NBA First Team honors for each of the last five seasons. He’ll be joined in LA by forward center Maxi Kleber and forward center Markieff Morris. In return, Dallas will welcome 10-time All-Star and current Lakers center Anthony Davis, guard Mac Christie and an upcoming first-round draft pick in the deal. The Dallas Mavericks start a 3-game road trip Sunday in Cleveland. Their next home game is Saturday, February 8, at the American Airlines Center. The Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison said the team is leaning on the incoming veteran talent to elevate their defense.
Doncic has earned all All-NBA First Team honors for each of the last five seasons and could go on to be an all-time great player in the league, in addition to commanding an enormous fan base across the country.

“We’re all heartbroken, man,” said Lance Greenslade as he stood outside the American Airlines Center on Sunday. “There’s nothing else you can say that even describes a level of emotion. I didn’t sleep last night.”
That heartbreak grew along with a small crowd throughout the day at a shrine for the superstar guard. He’ll be joined in LA by forward center Maxi Kleber and forward center Markieff Morris.
“[I’m a] Mavs fan for life. But it’s definitely not what I’m feeling right now. This has got to be the dumbest trade in NBA history,” said Carlos Solis as he stood in front of the makeshift memorial.
In return, Dallas will welcome 10-time All-Star and current Lakers center Anthony Davis, guard Mac Christie and an upcoming first-round draft pick in the deal.
But, the news doesn’t sit well with super fans who question why the team would trade their star player at all.
“Anthony Davis is great, if we would have got him five years ago. But I would rather have Luka Doncic for the next 10 years. No questions asked,” said Dalraj Singh as he peered at the memorial.
Doncic posted a letter to fans on social media Sunday afternoon thanking Mavs fans for their support.
In an official statement, Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison said the team is leaning on the incoming veteran talent to elevate their defense.
“We are thankful for Luka and grateful for his efforts during his time with us,” said General Manager Nico Harrison.
“This is a new chapter, and we are excited to welcome Anthony and Max to the fold,” he added.
“Dallas is my city but I’m not watching the NBA anymore, ” said Lance.
“They say loyalty never fades away. But it definitely faded last night,” added Carlos.

CBS Sports Texas Team’s Week 10 predictions: Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles
The Cowboys will play its first game this season without Dak Prescott. Dak’s hamstring injury turned out to be more serious than initially predicted. The Cowboys’ defense has struggled, and their run defense has been the worst in the NFL. The bad news is they will now face Saquon Barkley and one of the most potent rushing attacks in the league. Philadelphia should run away with this one. The Eagles win again, 26-17, and the Cowboys fall to 3-6. The clock starts ticking on “Trey Lance Time”
The Cowboys Game Day crew gives their predictions.
George Teague
The Cowboys are a bottom-10 team in nearly every category this season. Without Dak Prescott, things are likely to get worse. Their defense is expected to get a boost with the return of Micah Parsons, but the Eagles’ offense will also be at full strength with the return of A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert.
The Cowboys’ defense has struggled, and their run defense has been the worst in the NFL. The bad news is they will now face Saquon Barkley and one of the most potent rushing attacks in the league. Philadelphia should run away with this one.
Final: Eagles 34, Cowboys 17
Bill Jones
The last time Dak Prescott got hurt two years ago, Cooper Rush replaced him and won 4 straight games before finally losing a game, 26-17, to the Eagles. Unfortunately for Rush, this isn’t the 2022 Cowboys. The Eagles win again, 26-17. The Cowboys fall to 3-6, and the clock starts ticking on “Trey Lance Time”.
Eagles 26, Cowboys 17
Isaiah Stanback
This week is a different bird, but most likely the same result. One pro bowler returns (Micah Parsons), and another goes to IR (Dak Prescott). Ham, no burger, peanut butter, no Jelly. The Cowboys are out of sorts and physically beat up, while the Eagles have figured out how to fly high.
Eagles 42, Cowboys 14
Briana Aldridge
The positive for the Cowboys this week is Micah Parsons is returning after missing four games; unfortunately, that’s the only positive I can point out. However, Cooper Rush starting isn’t the Cowboy’s weakest point. Seeing what this offense has put on tape, starting No. 10 will make a small impact. I saw two touchdowns from Cooper in Atlanta that turned into dropped passes by his receivers.
The Cowboys will need help stopping spin moves and hurdles from Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. In a perfect world, the ‘Lion’ will bring much-needed leadership back into this defensive group, but I’ve seen too many missed tackles to buy in.
Eagles 31, Cowboys 20
The Dallas Stars made a curious omission when showing Scottie Scheffler on the Jumbotron
Scottie Scheffler is a noted fan of Dallas sports teams. The Stars had Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on the slate for Wednesday evening. The only issue? There was no note of that PGA Championship victory on the screen: “Two-time Masters Champion.” Oof. Couldn’t even give him the “three-time major champion” moniker. Brutal. Masters remains the King.

Naturally, Scheffler made the short trek to American Airlines Area, because that’s what you do when you’re on top of the golf world. You find the nearest luxury box at one of your favorite team’s playoff games and you have yourself a little night (See: Koepka, Brooks, 2023 Florida Panthers playoff run).
While Scheffler probably wasn’t going quite as hard in the paint as Koepka did for the Ps, he did look to be enjoying himself and he did get Jumbotron treatment. The arena hit the “Caddyshack” music (nice touch) and Scheffler got a nice ovation coming off the PGA Championship victory. The only issue? There was no note of that PGA Championship victory on the screen:
“Two-time Masters Champion.” Oof. That has to hit like a piano to the head for the PGA of America. The disrespect. Couldn’t even give him the “three-time major champion” moniker. Brutal. Masters remains the King.
Scheffler’s appearance at first turned ominous with the Edmonton Oilers scoring shortly after to take a 3-1 lead. But then, like Scheffler on Saturday at Quail Hollow, the Stars came STORMING back, scoring five goals in the third period to tale Game 1 6-3. Everything coming up Scottie.

Mike McCarthy to leave the Dallas Cowboys, team confirms
The Cowboys said they are letting his contract expire. It was a 4-year deal set to run out on Jan. 14. Sports experts have argued that McCarthy’s three (12-5) winning seasons may not have been a strong enough case to keep him in Dallas for a sixth season. Despite the disappointing season, Jones continued to praise McCarthy’s contributions in Dallas. “I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure,” Jones said. “It doesn’t take any effort on my part to look at and see the positives of what we’ve had as a team under Mike McCarthy”
The Cowboys said they are letting his contract expire. It was a 4-year deal set to run out on Jan. 14.
Sports experts have argued that McCarthy’s three (12-5) winning seasons may not have been a strong enough case to keep him in Dallas for a sixth season. It’s no secret McCarthy and the rest of the Cowboys’ coaching staff were working on the final year of each of their contracts with no guarantees for the future.
In a statement released Monday afternoon, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he has great respect for McCarthy.
“Throughout Mike McCarthy’s tenure here, including the last several weeks, I have been very complimentary of the job he has done. That has applied to our record over that time period, our team unity and culture, Mike’s qualifications and track record of success, and on a personal level as a tremendous human being,” said Cowboys Owner, President and General Manager Jerry Jones. “I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure.
Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team. These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of time and depth to cover. Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction.”
McCarthy has arguably been in the hot seat since ending last season with a gut-wrenching postseason wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers.
The then No. 2 seed Cowboys snapped their home game winning streak that lasted for 16 months prior; more importantly, the Cowboys became the first 12-win team in three consecutive seasons to not win a conference title.
Still, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had high hopes for the 2024 season. However, injuries, including their newly signed 60 million-a-year quarterback, made reaching the playoffs nearly impossible. Despite the disappointing season, Jones continued to praise McCarthy’s contributions in Dallas.
“We’ve had three outstanding seasons, three 12-win seasons. It doesn’t take any effort on my part to look at and see the positives of what we’ve had as a team under Mike McCarthy.”
McCarthy’s five-year tenure in Dallas ends, but his overall winning record and resume, which include a Super Bowl and 12 playoff trips in 18 seasons, are expected to draw interest across the league.
Jones thanked McCarthy in the statement Monday afternoon and wished him and his family the best. He said the Cowboys will begin the search for the next head coach immediately.
