FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A man is in custody after police say he kidnapped a pregnant woman and then hit two people with his car in central Fresno on Wednesday morning.
The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Albert Mitchell.
Fresno police say around 8 a.m., Mitchell went to a residence in northeast Fresno, smashed in the windows, and kidnapped his pregnant ex.
The woman cut her feet on the broken glass.
Police say he drove off with her, but they were able to track the victim’s phone to Blackstone.
Officers chased Mitchell until they say he smashed into a bus stop near Clinton, hitting two people.
“At this point, we don’t know if the collision was intentional or not,” said Fresno Police Sgt. Diana Trueba-Vega.
Police were able to rescue the pregnant woman after the crash, but Mitchell ran, heading straight into the backyard of a nearby home.
Security cameras captured the suspect ducking into the garage of a home where a mother had just returned from dropping her kids off at school.
“I asked the cop what was going on, and he said that there was somebody on the loose for domestic violence,” explained the woman, who did not want to be identified.
As she went back into her home, she realized her garage door, which she leaves cracked for her cat, was closed.
She went to open it.
“I tried to open up the garage door, but it wasn’t opening like if it was locked or if somebody was holding it down from inside,” recalled the woman.
“Someone was holding it down. So, I keep on struggling, trying to open it up, and finally I opened it up a little bit, and I saw droplets of blood.”
Still from surveillance footage captures the suspect entering the garage of the home.
That’s when she came face to face with a man accused of kidnapping — and running from police.
“He was telling me ‘please be quiet, don’t say nothing,” the woman said.
On his knees, he begged her not to tell the police where he was hiding.
“I just said ‘okay, okay, I won’t say nothing,” the woman explained.
“Then I ran outside to the front, and then I told the cops, ‘c’mon you guys, he’s in my garage.'”
A large area was shut down as a helicopter circled, a drone buzzed, and police tried to drive the suspect out.
A recording warned of the risk if they were forced to use the police dog.
“We will be searching this area with a K9. If the K9 finds you, he will bite you,” the recording said.
Eventually, police did use the K9 and a pack of officers walked Mitchell out to a waiting ambulance around 10 a.m.
The victims at the bus stop were also taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Mitchell was treated for injuries from the K9 bite.
Police say he was on parole for a home invasion.
He will be booked on several charges, including domestic violence, kidnapping, and evading police.

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis police are looking for four people suspected of breaking into a bar and another business in less than 15 minutes.
According to a news release from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the suspects were seen using a brick to break into Hidden Gem Bar and Sophie’s Artist Lounge in the early morning hours of April 27.
Police said the suspects arrived at about 4:05 a.m. at Hidden Gem Bar on Locust Street in a blue Hyundai Sonata. Police said one of the suspects used the concrete brick to break the glass of the front door, and a second suspect joined him and entered the bar. Police said the suspects tried to tamper with the register but left the bar after discovering the register was empty.
Police said about 10 minutes later, the suspects arrived at Sophie’s Artist Lounge on Washington Avenue, located just a few blocks away. Police said they used a brick again to break the glass door and force their way inside. They stole four bottles of liquor before getting back into the Hyundai Sonata and driving away.
Police said one of the suspects was wearing a navy-blue puffer jacket, ripped blue jeans and grayish-colored shoes (possibly Jordan 5 Retro Jade Horizons). Suspect two was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and joggers, black/white Jordan 4s and a black/gray checkered man-bag. Both suspects covered their faces.
Police said a third suspect remained in the car during the incidents but maneuvered into the driver’s seat and drove the car away from Hidden Gem Bar. A fourth suspect was listed as “unknown” in the news release.

Suspect wanted for stealing $50K worth of items from family-owned sports store
Sports Paradise in Medford, N.J., is out nearly $50,000 worth of merchandise. Police are working with nearby departments to determine if other businesses are being targeted. Surveillance video is key evidence to help investigators track down the burglar. The suspect, wearing a reflective vest with a bolt cutter in hand, broke into a container in the back of the business on Hartford Road. He stole the first batch of Nike and Adidas apparel, and then came back for more around 5 a.m.
MEDFORD, N.J. (WPVI) — A family-owned business in Medford, Sports Paradise, is now out nearly $50,000 worth of merchandise after a suspect stole not once, but twice, from their outdoor storage container.
“I feel horrible,” said Medford Township Police Chief Arthur Waterman. “I don’t like to see any of our business owners, our residents be victimized by people like this who like to go out and commit crimes against other people.”
Waterman said surveillance video is key evidence to help investigators track down the burglar.
Waterman said on April 24, the suspect, wearing a reflective vest with a bolt cutter in hand, broke into a container in the back of the business on Hartford Road.
“I think he was trying to conceal what he was doing to make it look like he was a delivery driver or someone there working, maybe with the Conex box that was placed there to try to make it look normal,” said Waterman.
The co-owner said the suspect arrived around 11 p.m. to steal the first batch of Nike and Adidas apparel, and then came back for more around 5 a.m.
He drove away with the merchandise in a white van.
Waterman said he’s working with nearby departments to determine if other businesses are being targeted.
“To see what they’re dealing with, to see if we can come up with some sort of ring or group that might be going around and committing these crimes,” said Waterman.
Store managers said in a statement that they appreciate the detectives’ efforts.
“The idea that this person is nonchalantly taking from hardworking business owners who support the community is upsetting. Not only did the suspect break into people’s property and steal products, but also created a sense of fear that the community and their items aren’t safe,” the statement said.
“I don’t think there’s a definite concern for community members like households; obviously, it’s a commercial business,” said Waterman. “However, I will always remind our residents to lock up at night and pay attention to their surroundings.”
Waterman said they’re putting the pieces together to find the person responsible and make an arrest.
