New York Liberty vs. Atlanta Dream Prediction

I’m on the Dream and the points here. I think this is a case of backing the lesser of two evils here. The Liberty are the defending champs, but I feel like they’re getting that respect because of that title from oddsmakers. The reality is right now, the Liberty don’t look right as Jonquel Jones is out and Sabrina Ionescu’s been rumored to have been dealing with a neck injury. The Dream have been solid at home and I think they at the very least cover, if not win outright.

Chris Ruffolo’s Pick: Dream +2.5

The Liberty are back in action on Thursday and are looking to make it back-to-back wins in a matchup against the Phoenix Mercury. New York, however, was dealt a major blow in the second quarter after five-time All-Star Jonquel Jones was forced to exit the game.

Jones landed awkwardly after going up for a layup, writhing in pain on the floor while grabbing her right leg.

The silver lining here is that Jones was able to walk on her own as she made her way back to the locker room. The bad news, however, is that she was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The team announced via social media that Jones would not be able to return to the game due to a right ankle injury, which is the same issue that kept her out for two games last week.

The details of Jones’ injury are currently unclear, but the fact that she was ruled out almost immediately after the incident is not a good sign. At this point, her status for the Liberty’s game against the Seattle Storm on Sunday is up in the air.

INDIANAPOLIS, I.N.— New York’s WNBA team just got a taste of what it’s like to be Reggie Miller’d.

Just as the Knicks were stunned by the longtime Pacer in the 1995 playoffs, the Liberty fell victim to another Indiana sharpshooter on Saturday night. Caitlin Clark lit up the court with a 32-point performance for the Fever, including a blistering stretch of three consecutive three-pointers in just 38 seconds — a run that echoed Miller’s iconic eight points in nine seconds at Madison Square Garden.

With the Liberty ahead 21-15 late in the first quarter, Clark seemingly decided to take matters into her own hands, launching deep threes on back-to-back-to-back possessions, sending the Indiana crowd into a fevered (no pun intended) atmosphere.

What made Clark’s performance even more impressive was that she had missed the previous four games with a quad injury, yet showed no signs of rust — proving that even time off the court couldn’t dull her historic shooting touch.

“She’s been itching to get back out there,” Indiana coach Stephanie White said of her star player’s return.

“I knew her adrenaline was going to be high to start. [Her scoring] carried us in the first half,” she continued.

Clark herself also expressed that seeing her three straight trays fall “gives you a lot of confidence” and that “I felt in good shape” upon getting back on the hardwood.

As for being dealt their first defeat of the season, coach of the 9-1 Liberty, Sandy Brondello, said that she gives “Credit to Indiana, I thought they did a really good job here.”

“They made shots; they really punished us at that end making 17 3s‚” she further said of the Fever’s great shooting night.

Clark’s performance against the Liberty was yet another reminder of her elite shooting from beyond the arc since entering the league last year. Her career average of 3.1 made threes per game leads the WNBA since her debut — making her the only player over the last two years to average over three per game.

The Liberty will look to bounce back when they host the Atlanta dream on June 17 at 7 p.m..
