‘Who gave him a seat?’: BJP questions TMC over Kolkata rape accused’s college admission
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Kolkata. The controversy centers around 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed, one of the four arrested in the case. Ahmed was admitted to South Calcutta Law College despite securing a low rank of 2634 in the CalCutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET-UG) 2024. “Welcome to Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal where the rule of law is mocked and institutions are systematically destroyed to protect criminals with political connections,” BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya wrote on social media platform X. All four have been booked under multiple sections of the BNS, including sexual assault and criminal conspiracy.
The BJP, on Monday, intensified its criticism of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, raising sharp questions over the college admission of one of the accused in the alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata.

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya has alleged that Ahmed was admitted to South Calcutta Law College, affiliated with Calcutta University, despite securing a low rank of 2634 in the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET-UG) 2024.
“Zaib Ahmed, one of the accused in the South Calcutta Law College rape case, was admitted despite a dismal rank,” Malviya posted on social media platform X, accusing the state government of allowing politically connected individuals to bypass merit-based systems.

“Meanwhile, meritorious and law-abiding students with far better ranks are being denied admission. Welcome to Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal where the rule of law is mocked and institutions are systematically destroyed to protect criminals with political connections,” Malviya wrote.
He also questioned who had facilitated Ahmed’s admission and who might be shielding him from prosecution.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Kolkata.
The four accused, Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), and Pinaki Banerjee (55), were arrested last week following a police complaint filed by the survivor, a student of South Calcutta Law College.
According to police officials, the assault allegedly took place after the woman rejected a marriage proposal from Mishra, the primary accused. All four have been booked under multiple sections of the BNS, including those related to sexual assault and criminal conspiracy.
The Kolkata Police, late Saturday evening, constituted a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged gang rape.
Officials said they are also examining whether the assault was premeditated and if others were involved in facilitating the crime. “We are investigating all angles, including the possibility of a wider conspiracy,” a senior police officer said.
