IMD forecasts above normal rainfall activity for July 2025
The India Meteorological Department has forecast an above normal exceeding the 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA), for the month of July 2025. Most parts of Northeast India & many parts of East India, extreme South Peninsular India and some areas of Northwest India, are likely to receive below-normal rainfall. The Southwest Monsoon set in over Kerala on May 24 against the normal date of June 1, which is the earliest onset in 17 years after 2009 when it was on May 23. The monsoon followed rapid advance till May 29 and covered south India and Northeast India. With rapid advance, it covered most parts of the country except some parts of Northwest Rajasthan, WUP, South Punjab and south Haryana, Delhi.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast an above normal exceeding the 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA), for the month of July 2025.Speaking at a virtual press conference organised by the weather agency on June 30, Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology at IMD stated that many parts of the country are likely to experience normal to above-normal rainfall.However, most parts of Northeast India & many parts of East India, extreme South Peninsular India and some areas of Northwest India, are likely to receive below-normal rainfall.The Southwest Monsoon set in over Kerala on May 24 against the normal date of June 1, which is the earliest onset in 17 years after 2009 when it was on May 23. It covered the entire country on June 29, which is nine days ahead of its normal date of July 8.The monsoon followed rapid advance till May 29 and covered south India and Northeast India. It further progress started on from June 16. With rapid advance, it covered most parts of the country except some parts of Northwest Rajasthan, WUP, South Punjab and south Haryana, Delhi by June 26.India received 180 mm of rainfall in June 2025 which is above the normal range of 165.3 mm, Dr. Mohapatra said. However, less than normal rainfall was witnessed in East and Northeast India with only 272.9 mm against the normal range of 328.4 mm.Earlier on May 27, the IMD had predicted an above normal level of monsoon in India for 2025. The southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA) with a model error of ±4%, indicating that above normal rainfall is most likely over the country as a whole during the monsoon season (June to September), 2025, it stated.The rainfall outlook matches very well over many regions of the country, except for some regions over Central India and peninsular region, the IMD said.The IMD stated that there have been 70 instances reported of heavy rainfall in the month of June 2025 in comparison to 51 in last year.June rainfall was less than normal for the past three years, IMD said.The IMD outlined the factors for good rainfall in June 2025 stating that most of the days, the monsoon trough was in the south of its normal position especially during the second half of the month.In July 2025, monthly average maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal in many regions, except northeast India and some areas of the northwest, east and southern peninsula, where they are likely to be above normal, Dr Mohapatra said.Monthly minimum temperatures are expected to be normal to below normal over many parts of the country. However, above-normal minimum temperatures are likely over northeast India, many parts of southern peninsula India and some parts of northwest, east and central India, IMD noted.The IMD also warned of longer days low pressure areas being formed over Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea which can cause the excessive rainfall in river basins in areas of Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.The heavy rainfall in several regions including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Gujarat has impacted daily lives of the people severely. Incidents of landslides, road blocks, waterlogging are being reported.
