10-month-old Neetika survived a flash flood triggered by a cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh. Most of her family members were swept away, including her father and mother. Search and rescue teams have so far recovered 14 bodies, while 30 people who were washed away in the flash floods remain missing. While Neetika survived the gushing torrent, most of her family members were swept away.
Neetika’s 31-year-old father, Ramesh Kumar, was trying to stop the water from entering their house when the flash flood struck. Later, his body was found in the flood debris nearby.
Neetika’s 24-year-old mother, Radha Devi, and 59-year-old grandmother, Poornu Devi, were also washed away, but both remain missing.
Prem Singh, a resident of Talwara village, was the first to spot Neetika crying alone and took her to Ramesh’s cousin, Balwant.
According to a Mandi district administration official, a bank account will be opened in Neetika’s name, and many people have already come forward to help the child.
As many as 10 cloudbursts struck the Gohar, Thunag, Karsog, and Dharampur sub-divisions of the district on the intervening night of June 30 and July 1.
