CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – After a dozen years of Charleston ranking as the top travel destination in the country, Travel + Leisure readers selected a new number one American city for the honor.

For the magazine’s “World’s Best Awards” survey of 2025, the Holy City dropped out of the slot it occupied for 12 years in favor of a southwestern city.

Results of the survey, published on Tuesday, show Santa Fe, New Mexico, as the new first choice. It was Santa Fe’s first time at the top of the list. The magazine’s readers praised the city’s cuisine and natural beauty. One reader called it “a true gem of a place in America,” the magazine reported.

Charleston, meanwhile, fell to third place behind New Orleans.

“Still, there’s much to adore about the Holy City, which is brimming with history and Southern hospitality,” the magazine said.
