Adam Schiff’s On-Air Message To Trump Had Colbert’s Audience Cheering. Then He Went Further.
“He’s threatened me with jail, called me a traitor, accused me of treason,” Schiff said. “Donald, before you piss off, would you release the files?’” “I’m not joking.”
Trump has been far more effective at cultivating “a climate of fear” since returning to the Oval Office than he ever was in his first term, Schiff said on the (soon-to-be-canceled) “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Law firms, universities, judges, immigrants, news organizations and even Republicans in Congress are all in Trump’s crosshairs, said the lawmaker.
Schiff reminded viewers of Trump’s attacks on him. “Ever since I led his first impeachment, he’s threatened me with jail, prosecution, called me a traitor, accused me of treason… blah blah blah,” he said.
Then Schiff turned directly to the camera with a message for the president.
“Donald, piss off,” he declared, earning thunderous applause from the studio audience.
After the cheers died down, Schiff added with a smirk: “But Donald, before you piss off — would you release the Epstein files?”

Longtime Joe Biden aide appears under House subpoena after Jill’s ‘work husband’ pleads Fifth
Annie Tomasini, former Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff for ex-President Joe Biden, was previously scheduled to appear for a voluntary transcribed interview on Friday. Tomasini’s counsel requested the subpoena, but did not say why. She is the third ex-Biden administration aide to come under subpoena in House Republicans’ probe in recent weeks. House investigators heard from Anthony Bernal, a longtime aide to ex-first lady Jill Biden, who pleaded the Fifth Amendment on all questions about Biden. CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios political correspondent Alex Thompson revealed in their book, “Original Sin,” that Tomasini and Bernal “loaded a written Q&A into a prompter ahead of a local interview – a document that the campaign had used in prep with Biden” Biden affirmed he “made every decision” on his own in an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, according to a source familiar with the Biden team. The book describes the “intensely loyal” duo as taking on an “older-brother-and-little-sister vibe” among Biden’s inner circle.
She did not say anything to reporters on her way into her closed-door deposition with investigators.

Comer is investigating allegations that Former President Joe Biden’s former top White House aides covered up signs of his mental and physical decline while in office, and whether any executive actions were commissioned via autopen without the president’s full knowledge. Biden allies have pushed back against those claims.

In an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Biden affirmed he “made every decision” on his own.
Just before Tomasini, House investigators heard from Anthony Bernal, a longtime aide to ex-first lady Jill Biden.
L-R: Ian Sams, former special assistant to the president and senior advisor in the White House Counsel’s Office; Andrew Bates, former deputy assistant to the president and senior deputy press secretary; former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre; and, Jeff Zients, former White House chief of staff, are expected to sit down with House Oversight Committee investigators behind closed doors.
Bernal pleaded the Fifth Amendment on all questions about Biden and was out of the committee room less than an hour after going in.
Lawmakers are largely not expected to attend the closed-door deposition, which is traditionally staff-led.
Comer has been to several so far, and progressive firebrand Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, has made surprise appearances as well.
House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair James Comer is leading the probe.

Tomasini and Bernal brought out the teleprompter as his aides were trying to soften his blunders as Biden struggled to stay on message, according to the book. But the teleprompter fiasco became an easy attack line throughout Biden’s re-election campaign, as President Donald Trump “weaved” through his myriad unscripted moments.
The book described how Tomasini and Bernal grew closer to Biden during the pandemic, eventually becoming Joe and Jill Biden’s most trusted aides.
Tapper and Thompson describe the “intensely loyal” duo – Tomasini and Bernal – as taking on an “older-brother-and-little-sister vibe” among Biden’s inner circle.
Far-left Firebrand Says She ‘Never Had A Concern’ About Biden’s Mental State As House Probe Heats Up
Annie Tomasini, former Director of Oval Office Operations, and Anthony Bernal, former Advisor to the First Lady, follow U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden to Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House on Feb. 16, 2024.
Bernal and Tomasini later took on some of the residence staffers’ roles in the White House. Tapper and Thompson said the aides “had all-time access to the living quarters, with their White House badges reading ‘Res’ – uncommon for such aides.”

“The significance of Bernal and Tomasini is the degree to which their rise in the Biden White House signaled the success of people whose allegiance was to the Biden family – not to the presidency, not to the American people, not to the country, but to the Biden theology,” the authors wrote.
A source familiar with the Biden team’s thinking called House Republicans’ probe “dangerous” and “an attempt to smear and embarrass.”
“And their hope is for just one tiny inconsistency between witnesses to appear so that Trump’s DOJ prosecute his political opponents and continue his campaign of revenge,” the source said.

Indonesia court jails former trade minister for 4.5 years in sugar graft case
Thomas Trikasih Lembong served as trade minister in 2015 and 2016 under President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. He was found guilty of improperly granting import permits for sugar to private companies. Authorities said this had caused nearly 600 billion rupiah ($36.84 million) in state losses. Lembongs claimed in court that his prosecution was due to his involvement in the opposition camp, local media reported. He told reporters after the sentencing that he would consider whether or not to appeal.
Thomas Trikasih Lembong served as trade minister in 2015 and 2016 under President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. Once seen as Jokowi’s close aide, Lembong turned into one of the government’s staunchest critics after leaving office.
Judges at the corruption court in the capital Jakarta said Lembong, as minister, was guilty of improperly granting import permits for sugar to private companies when the Southeast Asian country had a surplus of sugar.

Indonesia’s sugar output in 2015 was 2.49 million metric tons, while consumption was 2.12 million.
In last year’s presidential election, Lembong was the campaign manager for candidate Anies Baswedan. The election was won in a landslide by Prabowo Subianto, whom Jokowi backed.
Lembong, who was arrested days after Prabowo’s inauguration last year, had claimed in court that his prosecution was due to his involvement in the opposition camp, local media reported.
Prosecutors had denied his arrest was politically motivated.
“The defendant was proven legally and convincingly to be guilty of having committed a corruption act,” Judge Purwanto S. Abdullah said, to jeers from the crowd.

Before handing the sentence, the judges had argued the import permits did not go through the proper procedures of consulting with other state bodies and that he had prioritised “capitalistic” interests over social justice.
However, the judges said he did not enrich himself, leading to a shorter sentence than the seven years prosecutors had demanded. Prosecutors said Lembong had enriched the private companies.
Holding up his handcuffed hands, Lembong told reporters after the sentencing that he would consider whether or not to appeal, saying judges had ignored his defence team. His lawyer Ari Yusuf Amir did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on Friday.

Rhode Island police under investigation over ICE arrest
The city council of Providence, Rhode Island, has ordered an investigation into its police department. Video circulated online of local officers assisting federal immigration officers in an arrest. Ivan Rene Mendoza Meza, 27, was arrested after a car crash involving an unmarked car driven by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. City councilmembers wrote a letter to the police department, saying, “The presence of Providence Police officers next to ICE agents during the detainment has deeply disturbed the community.” But the mayor said early reviews suggest what happened was by the book. The man is “a self-admitted member of MS-13″ in his native country of Honduras, ICE said in a statement. The city council ordered on Tuesday a civilian oversight board that looks into police misconduct allegations will review the incident.

He assured the community that local police officers “will not cooperate or serve as immigration agents,” and said, in this case, officers “acted in accordance with our existing policy.”
“Our officers remained at the scene to ensure the safety of residents and to maintain order,” Providence’s police chief, Col. Oscar Perez, said at a news conference. “Let me repeat that: to ensure the safety of residents and to maintain work consistent with our responsibility to the public.”
Democratic state Rep. Charlene Lima told NewsNation’s “On Balance with Leland Vittert” that ICE should be praised.

“In fact, there would be penalties if they didn’t help them,” Lima said. “I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or Republican or a chicken. Our job is to keep our streets safe, not be criticizing the people who are helping us.”
Democratic state Rep. Enrique Sanchez referred to ICE agents as the “Nazi Gestapo” and “ICE thugs” on social media.
“They think they are above the law. I strongly condemn this act of terror, and I will be demanding answers and seeking action,” Sanchez wrote. “I’m tired of this s—. Providence doesn’t want ICE thugs in our city.”
Mendoza Meza has three fentanyl trafficking charges, according to ICE. He illegally entered the United States and was subsequently arrested by U.S. Border Patrol in May 2019. Officials said he then returned to the U.S. illegally at an unknown date.
