Kolkata: The rape allegation at the premier management institute that has 75 guards and 80 CCTV cameras to secure the 135-acre campus fenced itself in further on Saturday with the institute administration restricting delivery persons at the gate and asking students not to step out and refrain from interacting with outsiders.At a meeting held with students on Friday, officials of the B-school said all kinds of deliveries would occur at the gate for the next few days. Campus residents were also asked not to venture out and avoid interacting with others. The institute, while reminding students that the room where the incident took place is barricaded to avoid tampering with evidence, also told them that no police personnel are allowed to gain access to any room without the consent of security guards. Students were told to contact the student council members immediately if any investigating officer attempts to gain access by force.These measures were announced after an allegation of rape surfaced at the premier management institute under the ministry of education that has 21 campuses across the country. The Kolkata campus in the spotlight is the oldest.In a press statement, the institute said they are committed to ensuring that due process is followed while safeguarding the dignity, safety, and privacy of all individuals involved.”We wish to affirm that there is zero tolerance for such incidents and we remain steadfast in upholding a safe and respectful campus environment. We are also taking all necessary steps to support the process of ongoing investigation and ensure that institutional protocols are adhered to,” the statement added.A source at the institute said there were proper mechanisms in place to allow entry of guests, be it family members or friends of students in hostels. “The students email us the details and time of arrival of their guests. The guests are then asked to register their details in our logbook at the main gate. The guests also register themselves at the logbook at the entry of the hostel. Guests must leave the campus by 10 pm,” the source said, adding that if any guests arrived suddenly, the person with whom the guest wants to meet is called to confirm before registering the details in the logbook and allowing the person to enter. Campus insiders said they have the record of the complainant signing both registers — main gate and hostel — in this case.The institute has six hostels facilitating accommodation for over 1,200 students. Among them, two are mixed hostels with two floors allotted for girl students. “There are female security guards on those floors. CCTV cameras are at the entry points of all hostels. Security guards are present throughout the day and night at the entrance of the hostels and are vigilant during rounds at the hostel floors. The security guards and some security officials also patrol the campus at night at an interval of two hours,” said a source.Despite strict security measures, students find ways to bypass rules. “We sometimes bypass registration of guests by ‘managing’ the guards,” admitted a student, adding that there are ample ways to skirt rules if one wishes to. Another student pointed out that while guards are vigilant at the main gate, those at hostels are not so. In MBA executive, one student was rusticated due to a similar incident.However, a female student said that she had never felt unsafe on the campus and at hostels as there was proper security in place all the time. “There is no discrimination between girls and boys, and we can go into each other’s rooms and hostels for studying together or discussing problems. There is a healthy environment. Such incident has never happened before.” A senior professor also expressed shock and said in his 30-year career, this is the first time such a case has been reported.
