ALPENA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — The Alpena Downtown Development Authority has launched the Street Commons on Water Street, featuring a collection of “tiny shops,” each offering unique products.

The Alpena DDA stated that this location, situated in the heart of downtown, provides businesses with an opportunity to test-run their products. The property is leased for five years, and the tiny shops will operate during the summer and Christmas time.

“Here’s five new businesses locating within our district that otherwise, you know, they wouldn’t have a space or maybe they were too cautious to jump into a full brick and mortar,” said Anne Gentry, the Executive Director of the Alpena Downtown Development Authority. “So we’re really, you know, doing this as kind of an incubator for these new businesses or existing businesses outside Alpena to try out the downtown, get a sense for the market, trial their products.”

The concept draws inspiration from other successful tiny shop initiatives in Michigan, such as those in downtown Detroit and the Western Market in Muskegon.
