A Colorado Open Thread, May 12, 2025: Leopards eating faces in Colorado
Colorado has a huge AmeriCorps presence with programs operating on more than 700 sites across all 64 counties. In April, the federal Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk cut more than 500 of 700 federal Ameri corps positions, a national Americorps program and $400 million in grant funding. Some positions have likely been reinstated as lawsuits continue in the courts, but the cuts were still drastic enough for Commissioner Williams to be told about that drastic reduction in capability last week. NOAA, situated under the Commerce Department, is instrumental in climate research and houses the National Weather Service.

AmeriCorps workers are doing good all over Colorado. Why is DOGE cutting its funding?
AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. Members do everything from wildfire mitigation to building affordable housing. In April, the federal Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk cut more than 500 of 700 federal Ameri corps positions. The cuts hit 1,000 programs across the U.S. and led to the end of service for 300 members across 200 sites in Colorado. The agency receives roughly $1 billion in taxpayer funds every year, according to the National Taxpayers Foundation, which audits the agency for mismanagement of taxpayer dollars. It’s hard for me to imagine anyone who truly understands the economy saying we shouldn’t expand these programs, says Josie Heath, founder of Mile High Youth Corps. The program is rooted in social justice, Heath says. It can be a good fit for Colorado, which has a huge AmeriCorp presence. It also can be good for the economy, which is in need of more workers, she says, and for communities.

Impact of gutting AmeriCorps on communities and lives
AmeriCorps is a federal agency for national service and volunteerism. It engages over 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service working in areas like education, community development, public health, the environment, helping rebuild areas hit by disasters and fighting wildfires. Members are paid minimum wage for their service and often live in subsidized housing with other members in the community where they are serving for up to a year. The decision, recommended by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), also has a number of people questioning the rationale as multiple economic studies over time have shown that, for every $1 invested in Ameri corps, a community reaps $34. The impact is felt especially hard in the San Luis Valley, where three of the six counties are listed among the poorest in Colorado. The reprieve may only be temporary, but at least it’s better than what other states are encountering. In Kansas, they had to tell all their members to leave and go home. In Colorado, officials at the state level have told some organizations to hold off on taking any action just yet.

‘Harmful and hurtful’: Trump administration cuts to AmeriCorps would impact Colorado students
AmeriCorps is a federal agency that aims to improve communities through service and volunteerism. Colorado joined a multistate lawsuit over the cuts that argues that the Trump administration’s “decision to dismantle Ameri corps flouts Congress’S creation” of the agency. The cuts hit 27 of Colorado’s 37 Americorps programs, Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera said. The work is continuing, buoyed by state funding as the court decides whether to block the cuts. But the funding won’t last forever, Primaversa said, “We’re turning over every rock to see if we can find some money. We don’t know how long we can keep this up.’“The sad thing is it really impacts the most vulnerable kids,” she said. “It just takes one adult to make a difference in a child’s life,’ said Brian Conly, the executive director of Parent Possible.

Colorado Files Lawsuit Against Trump Administration
The State of Colorado filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration’s abrupt cuts to funding and services that help Colorado prevent wildfires, support student success, and ensure Coloradans’ access to mental health care through AmeriCorps. The sudden termination by the Trump administration prematurely ended the service of nearly 300 Ameri corps members in Colorado at close to 200 sites across the state. For every $1 spent on Americorps efforts, up to $34 is returned to the community, according to the lawsuit. The Trump administration has already impacted the federal infrastructure of Ameri Corps by initiating the Reduction in Workforce (RIF) process to most of its 650 federal employees.

Without AmeriCorps, Rural Communities Will Lose Essential Social Services
In Colorado, 27 out of 37 AmeriCorps programs were cut, said Colorado Lieutenant Governor, Dianne Primavera. Many of these programs provided pivotal social services for rural communities that do not have the resources to fill these gaps without federal funding. 24 states and the District of Columbia, including Colorado and Kentucky, filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration’s cuts to Ameri corps funding, calling it unconstitutional because it “usurps Congress’s power of the purse” and does not allow the agency to serve its mission and purpose.“This isn’t a time to cut Americorps. It’’s a time really, to double down on services, not dismantle it,” said Primaversa, the state agency that manages Colorado Ameri Corps. The program was established as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps (NCCC) that was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. It was later used as a model for conservation programs that still exist today.

Federal budget cuts from DOGE impacting the valley – The Crested Butte News
AmeriCorps has been ordered to terminate close to $400 million in grants — roughly 41% of the national service agency’s total grant funding. The decision to eliminate millions of dollars in grants affects 1,031 organizations, and 32,465 Ameri corps members and senior volunteers. Mountain Roots Food Project is one of the local non-profits impacted by the move. The town of Crested Butte has brought on Alexa Luger to keep sustainability efforts moving forward during Dannah Leeman Gore’s maternity leave. The move is the latest blow to the organization, which deploys thousands of young people to work on community service projects across the U.S. and around the world. “It has been a win/win experience as she has been able to get some work done and get back to school in the fall,” said Luger, a recent graduate of the University of Colorado of Greeley and a member of the Americorps team in the Gunnison Valley.
