Amid opposition queries, ECI begins special voter roll revision in Bihar
The Election Commission of India has started a special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the assembly polls. The opposition questioned the timing of the exercise as well as the intention behind it. The process of “verifying the eligibility of each elector”, with “full participation of all political parties”, is “progressing well as per schedule”, the poll panel said. It urged all voters to validate the newly introduced forms and submit them.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday announced that it has started a special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the assembly polls, even as the opposition questioned the timing of the exercise as well as the intention behind it.The process of “verifying the eligibility of each elector”, with “full participation of all political parties”, is “progressing well as per schedule”, it said. The poll panel said that of the existing 78,969,844 voters, names of 49.6 million voters figured in the last intensive revision of electoral rolls on January 1, 2003, so these voters will simply have to verify their details in the pre printed enumeration form. It urged all voters to validate the newly introduced forms and submit them.”Printing as well as door-to-door distribution of new enumeration forms for all the existing 7,89,69,844 electors of Bihar has already started in each of the 243 assembly constituencies of Bihar. Online filling of the new enumeration forms has already been enabled and has also started successfully,” the ECI said.More than 100,000 volunteers will be assisting genuine electors, particularly the old, sick, persons with disabilities, poor and other vulnerable groups during the exercise, the poll panel said, adding that SMS messages are also being sent to the 57,407,022 registered mobile numbers in Bihar. While the ECI already has 77,895 booth-level officers (BLOs) in the state, it is appointing nearly 20,603 more BLOs for new polling stations. The divisional commissioners and district magistrates are engaging all the BLOs full time during the exercise. The poll panel said that registered national and state political parties have already appointed 154,977 booth-level agents in the state and that they can appoint more of them.
