ANAHEIM, Calif. — Angels manager Ron Washington will be sidelined from his managerial duties indefinitely as he deals with an undisclosed health concern.

Washington, 73, will remain around the team and watch games from general manager Perry Minasian’s suite. Bench coach Ray Montgomery will manage the team in the interim.

“He hasn’t been himself these past couple days. We all saw that,” said Angels shortstop Zach Neto, who has a close relationship with the skipper. “I’m glad he was able to figure something out and take these days to get himself back to normal.”

It’s unclear how long Washington will be out, though Minasian was clear he expects his manager to be back this season. Washington has been in his office, interacting with players, coaches and other staff.

It became clear in New York that Washington wasn’t himself. Angels outfielder Taylor Ward said he noticed the manager moving a little more slowly.

Minasian wasn’t with the team in New York because he was attending the MLB Draft combine in Phoenix. He received a call from the medical staff reporting that Washington wasn’t moving well or feeling well.

The GM closed the clubhouse during the open media session to address the team this afternoon. The meeting lasted only a few minutes.

“We’re going to cross every T and dot every I, and make sure he’s 100 percent before he’s back in the dugout,” Minasian said. “How long is it going to take? I don’t know. I don’t expect it to be too long.

“We all know how important this is for all of us, but obviously health is more important than anything. Me, personally, I’m not letting him back in the dugout until I know he’s 100 percent.”

Montgomery has managed the Angels before. He took over the reins briefly when then-manager Phil Nevin was suspended following a brawl with the Mariners in 2022. He also managed the team for several days in spring training when Washington was dealing with a different illness.

The Angels will likely make other adjustments to the coaching staff, though Minasian said those decisions have yet to be determined.

“It’s sad, but we wish the best for him. We want him to get healthy as soon as possible and get back with us,” Ward said. “We’ve got a good chance to come together even more. I’m looking forward to tonight, and taking it to these guys, and doing it for him.”
