Ann Arbor-area sports: Skyline baseball makes statement with SEC-Red title
Skyline edge Saline 4-2 on Thursday win the conference championship outright. The Eagles split their doubleheader with Saline on Monday leaving the single game as the deciding factor. The Dreadnaughts extended their winning streak to five games with Thursday’s sweep. Saline and Skyline finished tied at 16-5 in the SEC-Red competition. The Bulldogs had a strong offensive showing in Game 1 and completed the sweep with a dominant pitching defensive effort in the nightcap. The Lions could meet Saline again in the district semifinals — if the Eagles get past Pioneer in next Tuesday’s district opener. The Tigers won the league title via a tiebreaker as it won both series against Saline, Dexter and Dexter. The Grizzlies won the title by winning the final game of the series against the Hornets by a score of 4-1.
The Eagles may not have entered their series against Saline with the SEC-Red title on the line as a ranked team, but they made a statement by winning the series to claim the league title.
In the end, Skyline edge Saline 4-2 on Thursday win the conference championship outright, despite finishing tied with Saline and Dexter at 16-5 in SEC-Red competition.
Skyline captured the league title via a tiebreaker as it won both series against Saline and Dexter.
The Eagles split their doubleheader with Saline on Monday leaving the single game as the deciding factor.
Skyline led 4-0 on Wednesday before the game was delayed due to weather, but the Eagles held onto that lead when play resumed Thursday to capture the crown.
Saline outhit Skyline in the third game, but the Eagles built enough of a cushion early to stave off the Hornets and end their bid at three straight league titles.
Skyline’s Caleb Raymond and Oliver Myler each had a hit and drove in a run, while Jack Kidle struck out four batters and Nehith Kumar struck out three batters to aid in the win.
Johnny Arvai drove in one run for the Saline and Devin Lilley led the team with two hits.
Even after this week’s clash, Saline and Skyline could meet again in the district semifinals — if the Eagles get past Pioneer in the district opener next Tuesday.

The Railsplitters scored four runs in the first inning to pull ahead and never looked back.
Lincoln standout Savanna Kane was consistent at the plate and in the circle as she had two hits and two RBIs and struck out three batters to earn the win.
Autumn Anderson and Taylor Pinter each added two hits and two RBIs and McKaylie Kern chipped in with three runs batted in for Lincoln.

Saline and Ann Arbor Skyline traded blows in an intense doubleheader Monday. The two split the matches, setting the stage for a decisive rubber match on Wednesday. Saline (16-4 SEC-Red) can win the league crown outright with a win on Wednesday, while Skyline (15-5 SEC- Red) can force a tie with a victory. The Hornets closed outSEC-Red competition with a sweep to finish 18-0 in league play. The Gryphons had two strong defensive performances to secure the sweep. The Railsplitters went toe-to-toe with Bedford and earned the split. The Grizzlies beat Whitmore Lake 3-1 in the other game. The Royals beat Bedford 7-6 in the second game.
The two split the matches, setting the stage for a decisive rubber match on Wednesday.
It was as close as it gets between the two squads as Saline won the first game 3-2 and Skyline rebounded with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
In Game 1, Saline rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning from an error by Skyline.
Matt Mareno led the Hornets with three hits and struck out seven Skyline batters in seven innings of work.
Mason Piazza added two hits and two RBIs for Saline, while Ryder Concannon and Austin Abbate each had a hit and a run scored.
Skyline’s Landry Jobe led the team with a hit and an RBI, while Caleb Raymond went 8.1 innings and struck out 13 batters.
The Eagles found just enough offense in the second game to keep their hopes of an SEC-Red title going.

Jessi Phelps secured the first win with four strikeouts and four hits allowed in three innings and Zosia Mazur won Game 2 with nine strikeouts and three hits allowed.

The Railsplitters went toe-to-toe with Bedford and earned the split.

The Tigers are now 15-3 in the league and the Tigers are 14-4 in the state. The Lions are now 13-4 and the Grizzlies are 12-6 in the State of Michigan and the Midwest League. The teams will meet again next week for a crucial 3- game clash.

Taylor Pinter had two hits and four RBIs, Alaina Grasley had two hits and three RBIs, Savanna Kane had five hits and three RBIs and Sheyla Urena-Jordan had four hits and three RBIs.

Huron scored two runs in the third inning and kept Milan’s eight runners on base from reaching home to secure the win.
Milan’s Kendyll Fell pitched six innings, striking out six batters and allowing three hits in the game.
Huron Pitcher Rylie Greggo struck out seven batters to earn the win.
“Sometimes the game just doesn’t go your way,” said Milan coach Kirk Davis. “Our pitching was solid, and we had our chances, but luck wasn’t on our side today.”

The Big Reds won three of the doubles matches and saw No. 2 singles player Sarah Monroe earn a win.
Milan’s Ava Swaney and Alaina Brubaker won in No. 2 doubles, followed by wins from Maria Scuccimarri and Lana Pacholke (No. 3) and Hailey Dunn and Jill Blackburn (No. 4).

FGR won three of its doubles matches and singles match to earn the split.
Kenna Trost was FGR’s lone singles winner, while Lucie Kalkofen and Kate Kendzicky (No. 2 doubles), Amana Alvarado and Anastasia Eustice (No. 3) and Alexa Daniels and Gia Munufo (No. 4) earned victories.
Monroe 6, Lincoln 2
Lincoln’s Elise Gelsanliter (No. 1 singles) and Kendall Greca (No. 2 singles) each secured victories on Monday.

Saline finished third with a team score of 315, while Greenhills took fourth (337) and Milan placed 17th (395) at West Shore Golf and Country Club.
Saline’s Eddie Robbins finished second with a 75, and Jack McFarlane placed fourth with a 76.
Keating Holland was Greenhills’ leading golfer with a 77 to finish fifth and Max Jenness was Milan’s leading golfer with a 92.

Dexter knocked off No. 7 Saline in a key conference doubleheader on Monday. The Gryphons had their best scoring performance at the plate this season. The Big Reds scored a season-high in runs to pull away with the win. Chelsea finished second at the event, led by Parker Westcott, who shot a 76 to finish third overall. The Pioneers managed to stave off Monroe in both games on Monday, winning 5-5 and 5-1. The Bulldogs finished as runners-up to Pioneer, while Saline took fifth and Greenhills took ninth. The conference tournament will be held in New York City on June 14 and 15. The tournament will also take place in Washington, D.C., on June 16 and 17, and in Atlanta, Georgia on June 18 and 19. The championship game will take place on June 21 and 22.

Andrew Cusick got the win for Dexter in Game 1 with six strikeouts in five and 2/3 innings.

Nick Roney struck out seven batters and allowed zero hits in two innings to secure the win. Roney also had one hit and one RBI.

The Pioneers managed to stave off Monroe in both games on Monday.
AJ Karsch drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh to earn the first win for the Pioneers. He finished the game with an RBI and Nolan Kreske and Anders Whitridge each drove in a run.
Whitridge also had two hits and an RBI in the second game, while Braelyn Penn and Elliott Pike drove in one run.
Pike secured the win in the first game after striking out five batters and Anthony Gustafson earned the win in the second game with six strikeouts.
