HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – The fourth annual “Move 5K” is raising funds and spreading awareness on Saturday for the important programs from the Urban League of Greater Hartford.

In Hartford’s Keeney Park, the community is running for a reason.

“This is a way for us to promote health,” said David Hopkins. “So we think about the community and particularly communities of color and hear statistics about obesity and high blood pressure and such.”

There are different activities to get folks moving.

The Urban League of Greater Hartford is also helping connect people to different services that they may not know were available to them.

“Awareness, so the community knows that they have partnerships with various different entities in the community,” explained Latosha Johnson of Hartford. “Non-profit providers, where you can go to get food, where you can go to get support, therapy, all those things.”

Sharon Wildowsky doesn’t take her physical health for granted after a major health scare.

“I ended up running my first ever race with leukemia lymphoma,” noted Wildowsky. “It was a full on marathon. My first ever, ever race.”

Running and exercising has become a passion ever since.

“You want people and kids to get out more rather than be on their tablets and that,” added Wildowsky. “To have a community say here, we’re offering all of this when you’re available, we’re here for you. It’s amazing.”

“Get out here and get moving,” said Michele Johnson of Hamden. “Staying active you know. You’re doing yourself a disservice when you stay at home and sit on the couch.”
