The company has asked both to train versions of their models that could run on Apple’s cloud infrastructure to test them privately. This is a big sign that Apple might not rely on its own technology to bring Siri up to speed in the AI assistant race. However, we’re still early; no final decision has been made, and Apple’s own AI effort, known internally as “LLM Siri,” is still actively being developed.

If Apple moves forward with this change, it would mark a big shift for the company, which has preferred to keep its core technologies in-house. But advances from rivals like Google and Samsung are pushing the iPhone maker to rethink its approach. This move has sparked internal tension, leading to the recent departure of senior AI engineer Tom Gunter. Additionally, the team behind Apple’s MLX open-source AI framework has allegedly threatened to quit, expressing frustration over the company’s current direction in AI development.

Despite considering partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic, Apple has not entirely abandoned its in-house AI efforts. Apple’s pivot away from building some in-house models began earlier this year when it canceled its own coding LLMs, originally planned as part of Swift Assist. Instead, Apple now enables developers to access external AI tools like ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude directly within Xcode, and it has started using Claude internally for code generation tasks. This reflects a broader shift in Apple’s AI strategy—one that prioritizes immediate capabilities over building every tool in-house.

At the same time, Apple is grappling with growing challenges in retaining top AI talent. According to Mark Gurman, engineers are being lured away by rivals like Meta and OpenAI with offers reportedly more than double Apple’s compensation. Meta, for instance, just launched the Meta Superintelligence Labs to pursue artificial general intelligence (AGI), hiring leading researchers from across the industry. Meanwhile, Apple is planning a significant Siri overhaul for iOS 26.4 in 2026, aiming to make the assistant more context-aware and capable of executing complex tasks based on on-screen content and personal data.

According to Bloomberg, Job’s Mob is considering using AI models from Anthropic or OpenAI in a desperate bid to make Siri look clever. While the company has been telling the world+plus dog that its own Apple Intelligence produces will be the best thing since sliced bread it has yet to get a decent product in the shops.

Behind the scenes, the black shirts in Cupertino have reportedly chatted with both firms about training large language models to run on Apple’s cloud gear. No decisions have been made yet, and a Siri version still running Apple’s wonky model is apparently being worked on too.

A new AI-powered Siri was supposed to be part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, but the usual delays have kicked that down the road until 2026. In the meantime, Apple has already quietly been using OpenAI to answer search queries and generate content, though only if users enable it.

Anthropic or OpenAI integration could give Apple the AI cred it sorely lacks. Samsung has been using Google’s Gemini models to power its Galaxy AI, and Apple is clearly struggling to keep up. There were even whispers it considered buying Perplexity outright.

After the iPhone 16 was hyped as being “built for Apple Intelligence,” things have unravelled. Siri and the Apple Intelligence team were handed off from AI chief John Giannandrea to software bloke Craig Federighi and Siri’s new head, Mike Rockwell. Rockwell previously oversaw the Vision Pro disaster.

Bloomberg claims morale in the flying saucer is circling the drain inside Apple’s AI teams, as outside help threatens their relevance just when rival tech firms are splashing the cash for top AI talent.

The rot isn’t just in Siri. Losing it meant Giannandrea saw Apple’s robotics division shuffled out of reach. Meanwhile, a long-rumoured smart home Franken-device, a cross between a HomePod and an iPad, has been put on ice too.

At WWDC, Job’s Mob still insisted it’s sticking with its own models for things like Genmoji and Writing Tools, and plans to let developers build features using these kits. However, those on-device models are slower and less capable than the competition’s cloud-based offerings.

Hyderabad: Apple showcased the Apple Intelligence features at the WWDC 2024 last year, but has since struggled to bring out proper updates for its AI functionalities. So, to solve this, the tech giant seems to be looking for solutions outside, contemplating the purchase of another company with readymade AI tools to start off its artificial intelligence ambitions.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that the Cupertino-based company is internally bidding for Perplexity AI, an AI-powered web search engine, which stands amongst Google and OpenAI in the AI race. The report quotes sources to highlight that Apple executives are discussing the possibility of acquiring Perplexity AI. Notably, this is just an internal discussion, and Apple has yet to decide whether to bid on the AI company or not.

Apple plans to buy Perplexity AI

Gurman’s report mentions that Adrian Perica, Vice President of Apple Corporate Development, Eddy Cue, Senior Vice President of Apple Services, along with other senior executives, have discussed this deal. It also suggests that the company might eventually decide against it. All these details indicate that Apple intends to kickstart its AI functionalities with an existing platform rather than investing in and building a new one.

The Perplexity AI, as aforementioned, is an AI-powered search engine that provides direct, conversational answers to user queries and cites sources for verification. It already has an AI assistant and plans to make more effective AI tools. The company already offers some of these features for iPhone users, which Siri currently does not have and would require a lot of time from Apple for their development.

As Apple is a trillion-dollar tech giant, it can easily acquire Perplexity AI with regard to money, if it plans to. However, seeing the company’s desperation, the AI company could charge a lot of money for the acquisition, to the tune of $50 billion.

Can Meta buy Perplexity AI?

Recently, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, revealed in a podcast that Meta is on a hiring spree, trying to recruit OpenAI employees by offering joining bonuses as high as $100 million and larger annual compensation packages. Even though Meta’s efforts to hire OpenAI personnel failed, there is a good possibility that it will move towards Perplexity AI. The integration of Perplexity AI into Meta AI could enhance its services across all its platforms.
