A new report from TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is offering a detailed look at Apple’s head-mounted device roadmap for 2025 through 2028, outlining plans for a refreshed Vision Pro with an M5 chip, a lighter Vision Air model, and new smart glasses. The report claims Apple has at least seven such projects in development, viewing head-mounted devices as the next major trend in consumer electronics.According to Kuo, Apple won’t launch any new head-mounted devices in 2026, with multiple releases slated for 2027 and beyond. Mass production for an M5-powered Vision Pro is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025, with projected shipments of 150,000 to 200,000 units. This update is said to be a minor spec bump, with other specifications remaining unchanged, serving primarily to maintain market presence and support the ecosystem. This aligns with earlier reports that a second-generation Vision Pro with an M5 chip was in development.Looking further out, a significantly lighter ‘Vision Air’ model is reportedly slated for mass production in the third quarter of 2027. Kuo says this new form factor will be over 40% lighter than the current Vision Pro, achieved by replacing glass with plastic and using magnesium alloy instead of the more expensive titanium. It’s expected to be powered by an iPhone-grade processor and offered at a lower price point, lining up with previous rumors about a more affordable ‘ Vision Air ‘ headset. An all-new Vision Pro 2, with a completely new design, is projected for the second half of 2028.The report also details Apple’s smart glasses strategy. The first model, a Ray-Ban-like wearable, is slated for mass production in the second quarter of 2027, with shipments projected at 3 to 5 million units or more that year. This device will reportedly lack a display, focusing instead on audio, camera, and AI environmental sensing features. Kuo suggests this category has the highest near-term growth potential and that Apple’s entry could push total market shipments beyond 10 million units. Previous reports had indicated Apple was accelerating development of its smart glasses , targeting a 2026 launch.Kuo also notes that a display-enabled version of smart glasses, or ‘XR Glasses,’ is planned for the second half of 2028, with AI being critical to its success. A separate “Display Accessory” project, a tethered headset that would have streamed content from an Apple device, has been paused since late 2024 due to its weight being uncompetitive. This aligns with earlier reports that Apple had canceled a project for Mac-connected AR glasses. The primary challenge for Apple, according to Kuo, lies not in hardware but in the development of the AI-powered operating system and software.Check out the timeline in the image below and please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter YouTube , and RSS for more Apple Vision updates.
